“I’d rather run the ball for 400 yards”……

The problem with being obsessed with the run to that point and not caring about your passing efficiency is this! When the run game is working big, no problem, anyone stuff your run, good night! Plus, with long drives of many plays, more room for error. Ask Cowher and Kordell how that feels :)

The irony is, Narduzzi has JUST ONE really good, 11-3 championship season, and it came from a high-powered pass offense scoring 40ppg fast and often and he complained about it and then specifically went and found an OC that would put a stop to that nonsense :)

And his only other better than average season, he had no less than the best offense in Pitt’s history. But that “sickened” him (his exact words) and he immediately retrenched with worthless retread Watson.

He is like a basketball coach whose system is to create open mid-range jumpers or a baseball manager who wants to play small ball.

That stuff was cool in 1992, but the analytics have rendered it obsolete. But he's the dude who insists his spade shovel is more effective than your backhoe because he doesn't "gotta get into maintenance and all that."

I wish one of the Pittsburgh teams Pitt or Steelers for once would sell out totally for a high powered fast and often high scoring pass first offense, yes, I know you need the QB capable of that, Ben was capable, but still, IMO they didn't sell out in favor of the pass nowhere near enough, they'd always start every game trying to "establish the run" like Cowher, then cut Ben loose when they'd fall behind. How about open the first quarter 4 wides and no huddle and try to score a TD in 2 minutes, then get the ball back and do it again? As for Pitt, do some up tempo college style offense, that is pass first, recruit the kind of players that can run with that.

As would any coach.

If you said you wouldnt, youre an idiot
Read his whole statement for context. He’s stubbornly and stupidly sticking to his guns about his criticism of last years offense, and trying to justify his shift this year.

Running for 400 is nice work when you can get it President Pornstache, but guess what-we don’t get to play Va Tech every Saturday.

When you can't throw the ball and the D is stacking the line, you will not run for 200 yards let alone 400.

And when you combine it with a slow and very scared QB as Slovis is now, he won’t/can’t make them pay for the 9 in the box by going up top. In fact all those extra defenders in the backfield left over from crowding the LOS petrify him. You can tell the entire world is rushing past his eyes. He panics and misses obvious open guys and heaves throws to random places. It’s sad to watch. It’s probably a little like the helplessness fans felt when Steve Blass of the Pirates lost his mind.

ominously, Tino was the exact same way and only at the very end of his time did he begin to play even semi competently. Meanwhile we wasted three seasons with him. It can’t happen again. The death throes of Pitt (and all programs like ours) have begun this past off season. At a max we have until the ACC GOR expires, and I figure there will be back room deals that will expedite that, and the cream of the conference will move on to the Bigs and the likes of us will be dead and gone. We’ll be cut a final check, patted on the head and euthanized. The check will be enough to pay for a few years of precious volleyball and soccer, but only a few. I won’t be paying attention by then, so good luck to all involved.

Is this an insult?

I think if you asked any coach if he would like to destroy the LOS they would say yes. Run the ball and your defense has to work less too.
Man you’re really trying hard to defend PN if you think that’s all there was to his statement.

We all wish it was as simple and black n white as, let’s see, I think we’ll run it for 400 yards this week instead of passing it for those 400 yards.

SIAP, but if they want to run the ball, then it behooves them to use a quarterback whose got some running abilities, too.

Yes and that suggests Patti should have played. But, as has been mentioned, when a blue blood cast off QB deigns to commit to a lower level program like ours, the unwritten rule is he is handed the starting job. If only so OTHER blue blood transfer QBs will consider us in the future as well.
It sadly has next to nothing to do with quality or beating out the backups.

I guess it’s hard to argue with that from a PR standpoint, as Slovis was used to garner higher expectations that Patti (or an Akron QB transfer) never would. People are swayed by those “star” numbers and the cachet of where they played (which is odd given that they are leaving due to failing there). But that star power translated into bigger donations and more tickets sold at higher price. So it’s part of the dirty business.

Pitt is 112 I'm the country in penalties per game and is somewhere in the 80s in turnover margin at -2 for the year. Plus the special teams stink. This dope wants to win games by playing tight games and win the old school way. Except they are sloppy. Can't win tight games when you turn the ball over often and commit a copious amount of bad penalties

You completely ignore his past comments about the need for a passing game.

But haters gonna hate.

our qb is awful as is our Wrs, the few that we have. we are running because that's our only option.

If we ran this offense last year with pickett and addison, your complaints would make sense. this year, with max browne 2, they dont..

Good points. Sure, it's possible to win games in a grind-it-out fashion. But the downside to this is that we'd have to play smart, error-free football - something that Pitt doesn't do. (This sounds like a "military academy -type" strategy, something that we've seen Navy do over the years. But Navy has these kinds of players on their roster, and this style of play fits them like a glove.)

What I'm not ignoring is his stubborn, stupid, defensiveness and defiance every time a reporter calls him out about last year's offense versus this year's offense and his parting shots at Whipple being pass-happy. Coming off the best offensive output in program history and best season in 40 years, those are the words and behaviors of a dumbass.

I don't hate the guy, I just don't respect his competency as a P5 head coach. I'd like to think Pitt could do better than Dooz, but maybe it can't, at least not for any length of time.

I thought that was a stupid thing to say.

If your a high school quarterback that is being recruited by Pitt why would you want to play for this head coach?
Yes, but imagine the recruiting pitch he can make to stud WR's....come to Pitt and you will learn more about downfield blocking then anywhere else in college football.

They will likely need to run for 400 yards against UNC to win this coming weekend. Their rushing defense is ranked 111th in the country.

Last thing I want to see is Slovis throwing it 30+ times.

The worst thing about making a statement like that is he doesn’t even truly mean it or believe in it himself. He just gets all defensive and pissy when people question his positions on various topics and lets his mouth get ahead of his brain. Way too often.

The fundamental problem is that Narduzzi seems to think that you get style points for running the ball. The objective of ANY offense is to score. Plain and simple. Score as many points as you can because when the clock hits 00 you win if you have more points. When you look at our offense this year our points per game is 57th out of 131 teams (so pretty much middle of the pack). Last year we were 3rd. Furthermore, Izzy has exactly half of our total TD's. We all know Izzy is a home run hitter (which is great) but we are completely dependent on him hitting home runs. Problem is that you can run for a bunch of yards, but if you don't put the ball in the end zone you accomplish nothing (aside from burning clock). Teams that can control the LOS can bottle up Izzy before he gets going. Without any serious threat of the pass, that's exactly what the better teams will do.

Narduzzi needs to get off the "run for 400 yards" kick and get on the "score 40+ points kick". I don't care if that comes through the air or on the ground, but generally speaking it's pretty darned difficult to put up 40+ just running the ball. Certainly, not against a good team.

It's absolutely stupid to compare last year's offense to this year's offense. Different offense, different personnel. If this year's offense had Pickett, Addison, Mack, Stovall, JSL, Krull, then they should absolutely be compared. Since they aren't, what is the purpose of the question?

You were pretty high on Slovis as well. Pretty sure you predicted that Addison would be very happy with Slovis coming to Pitt.
