CMUP's 2013 Top American Research Universities report is out

Can you believe that Pitt came in one ahead of University of Chicago, one of the world's greatest universities for the last century. Unreal!

For this report, size of a school's graduate education programs is an advantage. But even considering that, Pitt still fairs well, and typically does in this study. The only measure the Pitt didn't place in the 25 among public universities, for the second or third year in a row, was giving, which is collectively on all of us.

BTW, this report doesn't include the most recent numbers. During one of the worst periods of NIH funding, ever, as far as competitiveness, Pitt has actually increased its haul and jumped Michigan landing back at #5 after dipping to 6th for a couple years.

NIH research awards
1. Johns Hopkins
2. UCSF
3. Penn
4. Washington
5. Pitt
6. Michigan
7. UNC
8. Stanford
9. UCSD
10. Washington Univ-St Louis

However, its overall R&D expenditure rank has dropped a tad to #14. That said, the more impressive rank, federal obligations (more impressive because it is largely competitively obtained, peer reviewed funding, where as overall R&D expenditures contains everything, including state contracts and internal institutional funding) has jumped to an all-time high rank of 7th.

Total Federal Obligations for research FY2012
1. Johns Hopkins
2. Washington
3. Michigan
4. UCSD
5. UCSF
6. Penn
7. Pitt
8. Columbia
9. Stanford
10. UCLA

Yes the giving at Pitt is sad and loaded with lame excuses. One thing the ivy's do is instill the notion of giving while a student there and the notion that if as an alumn you don't give you are a dead beat! Of course thus can be fixed one person at a time...

This can't be right.

WVU is not in the Top 100. Something is wrong.
