Another sign of the apocalypse:

Domestic violence charges were dropped against former Ravens running back Ray Rice on Thursday, per ABC News Radio.

Rice hit his then fiance in an Atlantic City casino elevator, knocking her unconscious. Surveillance video was released showing him dragging her unconscious body off the elevator. Later in 2014, the video of him striking her was released, leading to his release by the Ravens.

Charges were dropped after Rice completed counseling and paid a nominal fine.

Who knows? With the involvement of a "friendly" judge, maybe there's hope for the UPS Three Stooges, too?

Society is already down the drain.

Anyone who has watched the tape is now a witness, so with 40 million witnesses how the hell does that get dropped?
Did the video tape decide not to testify????

That judge needs to go.

Not defending him as a human being but he did what he was asked. He's not exactly the first.

Not the first, but one of the only. According to the news tonight, there were over 15,000 people in the state charged with domestic violence similar to Rice. The total number offered a deal like Rice got was 70.

Just another sign that it pays to be famous.

And, more importantly, to have the money to hire good lawyers.

Their star witness is now married to him, too. Which is really the statement here, not the charges being dropped IMHO.

Its just amazing. The court system has let the public down.give a few speeches, say your sorry and that's all you need. WOW.

I am shamed of how this was handled by ALL parties involved. The courts were the last line of defense and justice and it crumbled as well. What a horrible statement to make to the citizens of this country.

I lose more and more interest in the NFL daily

How does this make you lose interest in the NFL?
The league itself - eventually - tried to ban him. Now, they screwed up trying to do it - triple jeopardy applied in this case - but there does seem to be an effort to root out this sort of behavior. Contrast that to some schools we know about.

I doubt the majority of these guys suddenly turn bad after going pro.

I think the money involved empowers many in the NFL - like it does any high paying industry - for the good and the not so good. Can it suddenly make someone "bad"? Not necessarily, but $$$$$ changes many - hence why the NBA (and perhaps the NFL too) has devoted a lot of resources to its rookies to help with the transition in regards to finances and all the baggage.

I lose interest because the NFL did such a bad job with this and other cases. The league has hidden and enabled its thugs for years. I get that it can't control the behavior of its players but it can thrown them out which it never does. Greedy owners then sign these guys after it starts to blow over. (Dallas this year, also a few years back when the vehicular homicide guy was on the sideline after killing a teammate)ESPN's headline was "who will sign rice' because it will happen. As a life long steeler fan I loathe Ben even before his shenanigans. I have been ashamed of my home town teams players because of the horrid behavior. I find it very hard at times to show my once deep love of the team. I divert more and more to college, even with its MANY flaws, it still has some sembelance of not being totally corrupt ON A PLAYER LEVEL. the NCAA is a joke of an organization and is a major perp in the flaws of athletics. As for the n.b.a. if they stop playing forever I would never notice, that league is horrid. All of the leagues are just getting insane. Pro sports has lost its luster to me.

Pitt-girl:
I suppose. Maybe the money just escalates it. My gut feeling though is that Ray Rice had issues long before he got to the NFL, just like Aaron Hernandez. And we all know about Jameis Winston.

Caleco:
Fair enough, though I really don't think the colleges are any different.
The difference is
1. Police and the community in the large cities where the NFL teams are located are a lot less willing to look away when someone decides to be a knucklehead, compared to the small outposts many college teams are located (haven't we commented that this is one of Pitt's problems?)
2. Corporate sponsors who feign outrage over such behavior can threaten the NFL. They don't seem to threaten the NCAA. Do you think Phil Knight or J Boone Pickens will stop giving money their school if players stop misbehaving?

The NFL (and other pro leagues) at least admit to what they are. NCAA/college still try to pass the whole virgin-pure student athlete concept. I actually find that worse.

The league has indeed hidden and enabled its dubious "characters". I recall Jim Brown, who's now looked upon as a "hero" in certain circles, was one of the worst. And then there's Ray Lewis....I swear that that the national media must have developed dementia and have forgotten his past, since they now fawn all over the guy.
