that the brackets are set up so only 2 ACC teams can make the final 4. If all 4 teams get thru to the elite 8 there are 2 head on heads.

there used to be a little more effort to place teams from the same conference in different regions. You'd think computer algorithms could figure this out

There used to be a rule that the top three teams from any conference had to be put into different regions. But as conferences keep getting bigger, it's harder to do that maintain the integrity of the seeds. And some of the schools didn't like it, because if you were the third ACC team for example, that might mean that you had to go to a regional out west rather than playing much closer to home, because the two higher seeded ACC teams got the better locations.

So now we end up with two ACC teams in the west. That doesnt help your point. They did add pods so you can play closer to home in the early rounds and not be tied into feeding into a particular regional.

We ended up with two teams in the west because an ACC team was the obvious fourth number one seed, so they got whatever region was left, which happened to be the west. And because a six seed made it to the sweet 16, and the NCAA has never, and probably will never, worry about putting a six seed in a nearby regional.

Do you suppose that North Carolina would have rather been the fourth number one seed and sent to the west, or been a number two seed and got put into a regional closer to home with UConn in it?
