Weren't the Polo Grounds like 480 feet to center field? Nobody makes a catch like that anymore because stadiums are completely different. Mays probably had to run 100+ feet to run underneath that ball to be in position to catch it, which makes it pretty impressive in my book.Yeah, that's the thing. That Mays catch is a great catch, no doubt about it. But it is only considered the "greatest catch" because it happened in the World Series. By a player from a New York team. Who happened to be Willie Mays.
Guys make catches like that in random, regular season games every season. But they are random regular season games, so no one really cares.
We should probably stop now....this is not a trip down memory lane....rather a trip down 'nightmare' lane!Yep, truly a sad moment, thought the same thing. Actually after the opener with UNC began to have some doubts. Think about it, you have Dan Marino and only score 7 points against UNC, 3 versus SMU, and 10 against the nits (which included Foge's intentional punt on 3rd down). Foge should have been canned after the 1984 season but was brought back for one more lackluster year.
Although given the Pitt admin, I doubt anyone could have maintained the level of success. Ed Bozik was the worse hire in sports history, and we are still feeling the consequences of him putting all his eggs in basketball/Big East instead of realizing football drives the bus. Also, think about it....your star QB is ruled ineligible for failing an algebra class. What school that is serious about football would allow that to happen?
I agree that a Pitt vs Nebraska final would be a fitting end to this season. Of course, that will depend ultimately where each team is seeded. Just our "luck" that we'd meet Nebraska in the semi-'sPenn State swept Louisville, so who knows? So did Nebraska, for that matter. I realize there is a long way between here and there, but anything short of a Pitt-Nebraska final will be a bit disappointing.
Greatest catch....over the shoulder....center field Willie Mays....not sure there is one better....also back in the day when outfielder's gloves weren't the size of manhole covers!

Haven’t you ever heard the phrase, “Analytics are only as good as your data.”
Clearly that means that the predictor should be just as good with zero games played as it is after 7 games.
It was painful to watch but I remember Russell Carter and one of Pitt players and I want to say it was Marc Spindler got into leading up to the game. They were rivals in hs and Spindler said yeah I remembered him he was supposed to play but he missed the game because he was in jail. One of the funnier lines.
Good God....yes....I still go into a depression when I recall that game. When it was over....I remember saying to others who were watching with me....I think we just witnessed the 'beginning of the end' of Pitt's glorious run as a college football powerhouse.
Greatest catch....over the shoulder....center field Willie Mays....not sure there is one better....also back in the day when outfielder's gloves weren't the size of manhole covers! It does make me laugh when the announcers say something like "he ran full speed into the seats to make the catch!" while showing the replay that shows him slowing down as he gets to the wall to not actually slam into the wall at full speed.
Especially given the moment, I think it's fair to call that a great catch (certainly better than the Jeter one you are referring to), but it wasn't the greatest catch ever or anything like that.
Will win ACC regular season title outright if they beat Syracuse on the road.
