NCAA "wins" NIL restrictions in House settlement

Great news for college sports. As part of the final settlement, the NCAA, on my advice from reading this board, is going to mandate that every NIL deal over $600 be reported and a 3rd party panel will determine if it that marketing deal is at fair market value. So no more pay for play NIL. Schools will be able to pay players directly, calling it NIL so they can remain as non-employees. But these booster pay for play NIL deals will be going bye bye. Unless, they just skirt the rules and pay the players $599 per day. Not sure what roadblocks there would be in doing that.

As I've said all along, I have no problem with real, legitimate NIL opportunities. BUSINESSES should be able to grow their businesses by hiring college athletes in marketing deals based on what they are worth. I also believe that these players should be full employees and should be compensated for their play. But as long as the NCAA insists that they be amateurs and not compensated for their play, you have to prohibit these pay for play booster NIL deals and rule players ineligible for accepting deals over their fair market value. The vast majority of college athletes are extremely unmarketable. Maybe they are worth $5000 to a local construction company or $2500 for a dentist to do a radio commercial, things like that. They arent worth 6 or 7 figures unless you are a Caitlin Clark or some other athlete who is nationally recognizable.

Mason Heintschel

Just got back from seeing him play against Bowling Green HS in conference play in Northwest OH. He looked pretty good tonight. Able to run and throw, great throw on the run, great field vision, was able to escape constant pressure and scramble for first downs. Narduzzi might've found a diamond in the rough potentially. He'll definitely be redshirted once he gets on campus though. He threw for 5 TD's and over 500 yards a few weeks ago. Heintschel is listed on Clay's roster at 6'2", 210 lbs.

Though, Toledo's Jason Candle was there. Probably looking to flip him. A Pitt coach was there too. No clue who he was.

B1G prediction

Illinois beats Nebraska. Illinois goes up in the rankings, because they also beat a ranked team and Nebraska, losing to a ranked team, only drops a spot.

Or

Nebraska, ranked, beats a ranked Illinois team and goes up in the rankings while Illinois, losing to a ranked team, only drops one spot.

Meanwhile Pitt, hopefully 4-0 after tomorrow, beating an unranked D2 team, drops further in the polls.

That’s kind of how the ESPN big 10
Homer logic seems to work. Perhaps exaggerating a little, but every year big teams are over ranked, lose to each other ,preventing the appropriate fall and a fair ranking. Am I wrong?

Why Pitt and Jeff Capel want Derek Dixon here so bad...

Derek Dixon

-43% 3 point shooter in the EYBL this year. 43% 3 point shooter in the EYBL last year. 40% 3 point shooter in the WCAC, the toughest high school basketball league in the country. This is one of the deadliest 3 point shooters, midrange shooters, and overall shooters in all of high school basketball. Period. And is a 90% free throw shooter to go with it.

-Averaged over 15 points per game in the EYBL on one of the best teams in the EYBL that lost 1 time going into Peach Jam finals with a 3-1 assist to turnover ratio. The leading scorer on his team with a Peach Jam semi finals appearance. Repeat 1st team ALL EYBL performer

-Played on one of the best high school teams in the country last year and lost the WCAC finals. Will be a preseason Top 5 team nationally in the entire country, will be the team captain, and will be the preseason favorite for the WCAC title to cut the nets down this coming season.

Why I like him... He can shoot the lights out and can score both in the PnR, the catch and shoot, all types of ball screens, and can easily score off the bounce and has shown ability to score with either hand on the inside. He's very efficient, he can distribute with crafty passes, he can lead, and he puts points on the board in a hurry. He's not the tallest player or the most athletic player and he is going to stick around in college for a long time while other teams pray he leaves while he picks them apart. Likely 4 year player.

-Derek Dixon is a heavy Pitt lean

Blurbs from around the college basketball world.

From 247:

Omari Witherspoon makes his ranking debut at the No. 104 spot and I think we could have went higher on him. He has positional size and long arms to go along with the ability to create offense off the dribble for himself and others. Witherspoon committed to Pittsburgh this week." — Jenkins

From rivals

“I love Omari Witherspoon to Pitt. He’s one of those tough underrated guys who will thrive at the next level; a DC kid who plays in the grueling WCAC and dominated the Under Armour Association this summer. He finished the summer averaging 18.4 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals a game for DC Premier. He has great size at 6-foot-4 with efficient three-level scoring ability and a chip on his shoulder. Jeff Capel does well with that profile of guard.” – Jordan

The rivals rankings should be updated this month.

Brennan Marion in the news again

From an ESPN.com article:

Sluka's agent, Marcus Cromartie, told ESPN that UNLV didn't come through on a verbal offer of $100,000 from an assistant coach. The quarterback's father, Bob Sluka, told ESPN that head coach Barry Odom later said in a phone conversation the offer wasn't valid because it didn't come from him, but rather from offensive coordinator Brennan Marion, who declined to comment to ESPN.

Hopefully, the OC has his backup QB ready to go.

The 3-2-1 Column: A great month for Pitt sports

In this week's 3-2-1 Column, we're thinking about a pretty great month for Pitt sports, where the Panthers stand in the ACC, Eli Holstein's future and a lot more.
