ACC on the ‘fifth down’

Chris Carter of the Post Gaztte and myself requested a statement from ACC head of officials Al Riveron on the apparent fourth down stop Pitt made.

Our question:

At 6:06 in the 4th quarter, Virginia lined up for a 4th and 1 play against Pitt with officials on both sidelines watching the play.

The play was snapped and it appeared that the quarterback was stuffed on a sneak attempt for a turnover on downs, but the ACC officials then announced that they were not lined up on the play, and that the play would be re-done.

Why wouldn’t the play either count for its result or be a penalty for a snap infraction if Virginia snapped the ball before the ACC officials had deemed the play to be ready?

Statement from the ACC:

“Prior to completion of the substitution process, the ball was improperly snapped before the officials were in position to officiate. There is no foul, the play clock is set to 25 seconds and the clock starts on the ready-for-play signal. “

O-Line Question

I dont watch the offensive line as much as some on this board, obviously the Tackle Spots and performance at Left Guard havent been good recently. My question is though, how have BJ Williams and Lyndon Cooper been. I havent heard their names much and wondering if thats a good or bad thing. Hopefully they can sure up the O-Line in the offseason so Holstein and Bell can work

Thoughts

Let’s start with the obvious.. the decline in Holstein is evident. The OL is bad but he also isn’t making plays. The low throw to Mumpfield in the third quarter is likely a touchdown with a good throw.

OL. Not making excuses because of injuries. Everyone has them. Taylor went down and this OL is inept. How is there this little depth? I mean they just get bullied. And they don’t not open any running lanes.

WRs. Man we talked about how well they played early in the year. Made all the routine catches and a lot of combat catches. Now they make neither.

DL. Need more beef. Too many undersized guys like Kancey (these guys aren’t) and they get bullied in the run game.

LB. Been ok. Put a target on their back with the sharks motto.

The continuous man coverage on third and long is maddening. 3rd and 15 and they blitz lol.

Officiating. Hate making excuses here. Pitt didn’t look good. Not bad enough where I’d say they flat out deserved to lose. The 4th down stop, the 2pt conversion hold, and no call late hit on Reid on the last drive were brutal.

I really don’t think that game goes any differently with Holstein in all game. But man, idk what Yarnell was looking at on that final pick.

Was going to withhold this piece of info til after the season but whatever. Heard Bell’s pass concept are good and his run concepts are bad before the season started. Talked to the person after the UNC game and said “idc as long as they win” well that’s coming to fruition…

If possible I’d try to upgrade the OL coach. try to find an experienced guy who can help with run game X and O’s.

Idk what Pitt’s record is on the ACCN 8pm slot but feel like it is not good lol.

You wanna know why people don’t show up? You’re 7-1.. 6 spots out of a playoff spot and 50k plus show and you look not even bad just truly atrocious.

Sorry but emotionally this team stinks…

Even Sauls. He makes the one he missed and we maybe could have been in range instead of having to try for a TD. BTW, he also cost us Tennessee a few years ago. Holstein has lost it.. And Narduzzi is what he is. An overrated egotist who has no game day management skills. My NIL has now officially stopped until they get serious about winning. Ala SMU.

OK. I feel somewhat better bitching. Lol

I'm kinda at a loss for words right now

Yes, went on the road last week and got slapped around by a good team. It happens. However, I fully expected them to redeem themselves tonight. Not only did they not do that, they were so impotent.

Terrible offensive gameplan and playcalling. The only TD drive Eli led them on was extremely lucky. Him and Yarnell missed wide open guys all night. The receivers, they were absolutely abysmal.

The OLine...I mean...holy effing smokes. There is ZERO talent on this line. They got hammered all night and plenty of times against a 4 man rush.

The defense played well enough to win...but again...a Pat Narduzzi special. 3rd and Long.

Penalties. 5 penalties in the 1st 3 drives. Holding, presnap. Those for the most part are inexcusable, especially presnap penalties at home.

I guess a positive is Junko rebounded from last week and kicked the ball well and Des Reid had a really good game.

The officials, well yeah they were on par with how bad our OLine was, but that isn't an excuse.

I guess I expected alot more from this team coming off last week. They had a chance to put some excitement back in the town...but they failed terrible. But when it all comes down to it...I think it's pretty evident they have overachieved this year with 7 wins and the early season glitz had dissipated oh so quickly. It's been a sharp downhill since Cal.

Hoping they can pull a win out @ BC because Clemson and Louisville will handle these Panthers the next 2 games.

Article ACC says officials made the right call in replaying key fourth down

At a crucial point in Pitt’s 24-19 loss to Virginia Saturday night, a lack of preparation proved pivotal.

But it wasn’t a lack of preparation on the parts of the Panthers or the Cavaliers; it was the officials, and their miscue created a stir of controversy.
