Article ACC says officials made the right call in replaying key fourth down

At a crucial point in Pitt’s 24-19 loss to Virginia Saturday night, a lack of preparation proved pivotal.

But it wasn’t a lack of preparation on the parts of the Panthers or the Cavaliers; it was the officials, and their miscue created a stir of controversy.

I've got some things to say...

1. Remember two weeks ago when some of you peckerheads were lauding Narduzzi for admittedly going cheap on NIL and making them earn it? Well, enjoy those 130-pound skeletons with feet for hands.

2. 3-something left in the game and we're needing a game-deciding stop, and that dipstick is standing in the end zone throwing t-shirts?! Complete lack of awareness. Someone should have jumped on the field and tackled him.

3. 1:58 left and we're running a Pitt Mom's segment?! Complete lack of awareness. Again, someone should have been tackled.

4. Referees out of position?!?!?!?! If this was a real college football town, there would have been more trash on the field than what China dumped in the ocean this year. And his head might have been on a spear after the game on top of that.

5. We need to join the MAC. Hopefully this volleyball arena leaves us so financially depleted that the ACC tells us to go play in Kent State's sandbox.

6. Speaking of the MAC, that's where Holstein will be finishing his career. Wanna bet?

7. Speaking of bets, anybody know a rogue bookie that will let me bet my actual beating heart on Clemson -45 next week? That will make Terrifier 2 look like My Little Pony.

8. Cancel the rest of the season. It's the noble thing to do.

9. If you have hired this offensive line to block a Jehovah Witness from getting to your front door, you're out of luck. If you have hired this o-line to block a brigade of girl scout's from getting to your door to sell you thin mints, you're going to get fat.

10. Oh well. We're Pitt. We suck, and we're supposed to suck.

... but fire Narduzzi. Mr. 7-5. Duzzzzz!

Mumpfields injury/reynolds

I haven’t seen anything mentioned, but I would be shocked if it isn’t a torn labrum with a possible dislocation.

I have had 2, different arms. But both are in similar circumstances. Hands outstretched and some type of trauma. Even if he could play there is a ton of instability, and that’s an issue for any blocking and outstretching of arms.

My one was an 80% year that I lived with for almost 16 years. I couldn’t throw a dart or a beer pong ball without it “slipping”’out.

No one should be surprised if it’s announced this week he is done for the year. That’s an 8 month recovery process for most people.

Also, it seems as if a break in the hand of Reynolds.

Tough if these are 2 season ending injuries.

Didn’t get good looks on others if anyone else has any insight.

Bell or Holstein

It looks like they both can’t co-exist and are both equally at fault for the state of the offense. Kade is looking clearly overmatched at this level with DC’s that have broken down the tape and found his flaws. Eli looks broken with no confidence.

This is absolutely reactionary, but the offense doesn’t seem to work with him at QB. Do we let Kade go? Do we hit the portal? I’m at a loss. The Cig offense was much better than this garbage. Before I get roasted for being dramatic, let’s do a breakdown:

Kent State - looked amazing. Terrible opponent
Cincinnati - Terrible in the first half. Great second half
WVU - great first half. Awful second until the last five minutes
YSU - FCS. Can’t read into it
UNC - Great game. Best overall of the season
Cal - Awful both halves
Syracuse - Mid
SMU - Terrible
Virginia - Somehow worse than SMU

Where do we go from here??

Which is worse?

A 2-7 start where you know you're cooked from the jump or a 7-2 start where the balloon is popped with back to back losses after building up so much hope?

I honestly don't know. I think I feel the exact same level of... resignation? Disappointment? Sadness?

Idk. Im definitely feeling gut punched right now. Pitt is the eternal Charlie Brown of CFB, I think. We just cant have nice things (Except the volleyball team. Thank the heavens for them 🙏)

Its time we had "the talk"

Season very likely going to end at 7-5. Needed 2 all-time miracles vs 2 middling B12 teams and a missed chippy FG vs a middling ACC team. We easily could have went 4-8 this year. If you listened to me all season, I have said this is a 7-5 team based on talent, who will probably finish 9-3 or 10-2 because we won all the 50/50 games. 7-5 talent doesn't win ALL the 50/50 games. TCU did a few years ago. But eventually it catches up to you. Pitt is no better than Virginia. We arent better than Cincy, Cal, and WVU. Those are all Even Steven games. We are 3-1 in those. Slightly better than UNC and then one of the flukiest games of all time vs Syracuse. Not sure we are better than them but their QB had an awful night and it was over early.

So this leads me to bring up the topic again of how much longer Narduzzi gets. The way this season is unfolding is even tougher to swallow than had he done his normal 7-5 season. Normal 7-5 and we're like, ok whatever, its same ole 7-5 Pat. But this year, he gets lucky as hell and gets to 7-0 and we're thinking, Pat, fine, you looked like SMU's JV team playing their varsity but that's ok, just beat friggin Virginia AT HOME and give us some hope for something special. Just do that and at worst, maybe we go 1-2 and finish 9-3 with a spot in Orlando or Jacksonville. We're happy with that. Just dont lose to Virginia. Nope. Task too tall. Cant beat a mid-ass Virginia team and now we are looking at 7-5 and you wonder how much longer Pat gets? He obviously gets next year but if have a losing season next year, that's it. Cant go 3-9, 7-5, 5-7. He needs 6-6 next year to get 2026. And with ND coming in and at WVU, those are 2 probable losses so he better go 6-4 in the other 10.

Yuck

Wow was that a bad performance by Pitt. They came out flat and never got going at all. A few comments:

1. The Offensive Line was garbage for the sescond straight game. Bad run blocking and pass protection. Ryan Baer should have nightmares tonight. Coming into the season I was worried about our O Line. These past two games have reinforced why I was worried. They're simply bad.

2. Our receivers were trash tonight. So many easy catches that were dropped. Williams was particularly bad.

3. Eli was not good. He missed open receivers on several throws. He really hasn't been accurate throwing on the run.

4. Defense was OK although Virginia was very effective running the ball against us.

Just a terrible overall performance following a ass kicking at SMU. So much for a magical season. We'll be fortunate to get to 8 wins if we keep playing like that.

Responses needed on the hold, the slide, and the refs not being in position

1. The hold - I watched it on replay. Trying my best to be objective but it absolutely looks like the UVa player slipped and fell and was not taken to the ground by Baer. Even if the ref thought Baer took him to the ground, it was so far away from the play while Yarnell was in motion to pass, the kid in the 1st row eating popcorn had as much effect on the play. Shouldn't you let that goal?

2. Ever since they changed the rule after the Pickett slide to the ball being marked down at the point where you start your slide, I have been saying that QB's should dive head first. 2 reasons for this: 1. You give up 2 yards when you slide. 2 yards are important a lot of times. It cost us the game vs Wake Forest last year. Dive. Dont slide. The other reason is I believe its safer to dive. How many targeting calls do you see on a sliding QB. Seems like there's literally 1 per game. A sliding QB gives himself up and is at the liberty of the defense to "do the right thing." A diving QB is still making a football play and can better position his body at the end of the run to avoid a helmet to helmet hit. And you get 2 extra yards which is huge.

3. WTF. I watched this on replay. I've never seen this. I am not sure this call has ever been made in the history of the football. They didnt blow the play dead. The play was allowed to be run and then after the fact, the ref says he wasnt far enough out of the UVa backfield. Well, why did they let the play run. Why wasnt a penalty on UVa for snapping it before the ref got into position. Only at Pitt would something like this happen.

Narduzzi has no feel for the game..,,,

Early third-quarter, we are up six and appear to be taking control of the game. Defense has made a nice stop and the offense has moved the ball into Virginia territory with a first down at the 35. Time to be aggressive. First down Reid gets four yards. Yarney makes a nice scramble for 5 yards to make a third and one. Earlier Carter had come in to score of the touchdown from the 1 yard line. Again we needed a yard. Our coach runs the 165 pound running back up the middle with our terrible offensive line. Bad bad call. Next play field goal is blocked. Five plays later Virginia has a touchdown. The whole game was turned around. I really think Narduzzi thought that if we went up nine points, his defense would win the game. Loser mentality.

Next point. A team that is poorly coached commit a lot of penalties. We probably had at least a dozen tonight. This is been a hallmark of Narduzzi teams over the years.

Lastly, he has no idea how to put together an offensive line. This year was bad. Last year was worse. And the year before Kenny Pickett’s mobility hid a lot of problems

One more thing. He is complaining about the fact that this team cannot stop the run. Pat, number 55 and number 11 are your two best defensive lineman. Quit rotating every other play. These guys will stop the run. If you need to rest them, how about taking them out one series every quarter?

Two more things. Junko is a mistake waiting to happen. Terrible. Lastly. Good night.

Look, we didn’t lose because of the refs solely

But that will go down as a game that had the outcome massively impacted by them. The Baer hold on the two point conversion was awful, but the extra play was one of the most inexcusable things I’ve ever seen.

So yeah, lots of blame to go around, but holy crap those calls were game changing and the extra down was one of the most egregious I’ve ever seen.
