His time at Oklahoma was a pretty good indicator that he's not much of a coach, but I guess we were counting on osmosis from his time at Duke after that.

I was personally counting on him to recruit at a level below Duke but much higher than Jamie. And on paper, he was doing that with Johnson, McGowens, Toney, Champagne, Jeffress but it didn't work. Now the ability to recruit is meaningless since money does the recruiting

We’re in a similar situation in MBB as we are in FB; if Capel isn’t “the guy,” where are you getting the money to buy out his extension, and hire an upgrade at head coach, and still have enough money to put together competitive NIL packages?

At least in men’s basketball, I feel like it’s more doable to pull off something like this because you have a better chance at hitting on a mid-major head coach than in football.

Champagnie, though he ended up being the best of the aforementioned, wasn't even a high recruit. But I agree that recruiting is what we were banking on. Seems like a lifetime ago, but wasn't Capel "in" on Timberlake, Reid, Dickinson, Cockburn, and some other 5 stars? I realize they haven't all panned out.

As for what he has actually landed, he honestly hasn't recruited much better than Jamie. There is a good bit of revisionist history on that front, but Dixon brought in plenty of top 100 recruits.

To your point, I think Jamie’s recruiting abilities are over-scrutinized on here. He landed 5* centers Khem Birch (who didn’t stay long) and Steven Adams not too long before he left for TCU.

Also, don’t forget he had commitments from Mustapha Heron and Maverick Rowan (5*), two top 50 recruits for the class of 2014 before they backed out. It was pretty late in the cycle IIRC and we had to scramble to round out the class, which is partially why we were in the position we were talent-wise a few years later. Had they honored their commitments, I think things end differently and Dixon stays beyond 2016.

I honestly don't understand why people say Capel is a good recruiter. Yes, he's landed a couple of top 150 players. But for him to win the way he coaches, which is not commendable, he needs 4 or 5 top 50 players, not top 150 players. He's not getting those. And he can't coach the players he does get to play defense and rebound.

I'm just going off memory, but I think even guys like Nasir Robinson, Gilbert Brown, and a few others were ranked a lot higher than people seem to remember. And then obviously you have guys like Fields, Blair, etc. who were up there.

The other thing people tend to do is act like he/Howland found players such as Aaron Gray, Gary McGhee, etc. off the scrap heap, when in reality they were top 125ish guys with other nice offers.

All the money in the world won’t help if he can’t get his players to play together in whatever system Capel runs. Someone needs to tell his players that it’s a team sport. Seems like a disconnect between Capel and the players. IMO.

McGowens, Toney, Hugley, Kante, Drumgoole, Bub, Lowe, Jeffres, Cummings, Johnson, etc. are probably about as good as we can expect to recruit out of high school, rankings-wise. Obviously they haven't all panned out, and I agree it's probably still not good enough for Capel, who needs something closer to All American-level talent.

We have a lead recruiter running the basketball program and a defensive coordinator running football. We're paying way too much for both. Like, WAY too much.
