Today's 3-2-1 Column is
suggesting a starting
line up of 4 guards. I
suggested that on here
yesterday. I see it as a
POSSIBILITY at different
times in a game against
certain matchups. I do
NOT seeing it as an
every game starting
line up. I do see going
with Johnson, Burton,
Sibande, and Hugley.
I'm hoping, Hinson, or
maybe one of the twins
can play the 4. If we go
with four guards we're
going to rely on outside
shooting and wearing
out Hugley inside. If it's
Jeffress?.....no comment.

Just my two cents.

A lot of teams use a lineup with one big and 4 small for portions of a game, it's become pretty common. With the guard depth we have now, it would be surprising if we didn't see this at times.

Don't be surprised to see Santos playing with Hugley and 3 guards at some point either.

It certainly makes sense that a 4-guard lineup could be used primarily--particularly if all the guards/wings remain healthy and there are no off-court incidents or academic casualties. The 4-guard option, in addition to taking advantage of newly added team 3-ball skills, also mitigates against perceived roster weakness at the 4-position (Jeffress's limitations, Hinson's health (?), Diaz-Graham twins' inexperience). This could potentially change if Hinson is fully healthy and as the twins gain experience over the course of the season; or, if the offensive light comes on for Jeffress.

In addition, given the depth of this roster, there are all sorts of possibilities for situational-use lineups, depending on circumstances such as a particular opponent's strengths/weaknesses, Pitt's/opponent's foul troubles; as well as other in-game situations.

Situational options could include:

(1) Defensively, to create a disruptive change of pace for a time, it would be possible to put a very long-tall lineup on the floor playing a Syracuse-style zone.

(2) Putting an extremely strong group (4 or 5) of all high percentage free throw shooters on the floor late in a game to protect a lead.

(3) A specific lineup that would be the most effective for employing full court pressure and creating turnovers when needed to come from behind.

(4) Ability to platoon two units to wear down an opponent with a very short bench.

(5) Increased options to rotate offensive-defensive lineups in a close late-game free-throw shooting contest.

There also have to be other possibilities that could be advantageous at times for a coaching staff that is being creative with a deep and versatile roster.

Well, you just re stated
what I posted when you
said "at times." Yes, as I
said....it is a " possibility
at different times in a
game against certain
match ups."

As for Santos, I would
agree that we might see
him with Hugley and 3
guards. Santos has some
size, and rebounds pretty
well, but then again, so
does Jeffress. IMO our
best hope is that Hinson
becomes the answer, or
both or either twin can
play effectively.

Don’t see it. I think there are times it could happen, but not sure it will be starting lineup.

Jay Wright made a career with small line ups
Hugely is the type of player who could keep up with a fast game pace
Most bigs can’t

Jay Wright made a career
with 4 and 5 star guards
and wings. BTW, the bigs
that he did play were
legit. They weren't a
cast of Terrell Brown,
Eric Hamilton, Kene
Chukawa, Noah Collier,
Max Amadason, etc.
