Re: First team All State AA

Well, who made it?

OK, thanks for coming back nearly three hours later to tell us.

Can't believe McConnell is first team all-state...he is slow, not a strong defender at all, can't creat his own shot but he does have a d1 caliber three point shot, IMO. One dimensional player. Johnny David from Lebo is more impressive than MM.

If McGinnis was 3 inches taller, I would say Pitt should at least take a shot at him. He is unbelievably quick, and is a good shooter and runs the point extremely well. I saw him play quite a bit this year.

Unfortunately, 5'9 might be generous for how tall he actually is. He will do well at some lower level school though.

Looks like many of the same criticisms we read about TJ, and look where he ended up.

Of course, most players that match that description don't end up becoming TJ McConnell. They end up exactly where their scouting reports indicate they will.

Gotta be a smart ass, eh?

OK, I have to ask....

do you realize how dumb it is to be complaining that a guy made first team all state who averaged 29.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 4.9 steals per game, and who shot 57% from the field and 78% from the line? He actually averaged more than twice as many points per game as two of the other guys who were first team AAAA. And he did all that playing for the team that won the WPIAL AAAA championship, so he wasn't just a guy piling up numbers because he was the only good player on a crappy team.

You understand that these teams are supposed to be picked based on what the player did in high school and not what they may or may not do in college, right? If what McConnell did in high school isn't good enough to be all state then they might as well stop picking the teams.

No, but, when I see a topic, click on it, and the post that starts it is ABSOLUTELY BLANK, then the topic starter comes back later and fills in the details, I'm not going to have people look at my question and ask what the heck I'm talking about . . .

He's playing for Cal at Kentucky next year (preferred walk-on). His dad played at Pitt when Cal was here so they know each other.

That's why John Cal invited him to walk on at UK.

I think the post preceding yours tells the real story.

McConnell making first team All State show how poor the WPIAL is on a basketball talent level. He was a top player here in western Pennsylvania, against talent that is not strong or even average compared to many other cities and their suburbs. He was able to put up a very good scoring average against a fairly poor talent level. And shooting close to 20 times each game. He is slow, does not have a quick first step to drive or create his own shot and plays shabby defense. Against Mt. Lebo in the state playoff game he guarded mt. Lebo's worst player who would not take wide open shots from the elbow or foul line. None of char valley's players would even guard this kid when he got the ball.

All state because he was the best player in western Pa from a known basketball family and the writers in western pa basically had not other option to vote for and see his scoring average voting him in
