Wasn’t there a free board thread about this event? It was fun while it lasted.

Congrats to Canada for pulling out the win.

That was an awesome game. Evenly matched the whole game. Bennington stepped up when he needed to.

You knew when McJesus took the shot off of the face off he probably was scoring that shift.

Slavin was ridiculous with his D. My God he was awesome.

The crowd at TD was not nearly as passionate as at Bell. Since it was a hate match maybe they should have done it in Philly.

These guys are all schedule to play tomorrow. That’s insane.

Next year will be Olympics in Italy. Now hockey has to figure out right timing to bring this one back.

Also you could tell Sid’s elbow got worse as tourney went on. Wouldn’t shock me if he sits out this whole weekend.

Competitive but boring game last night. Having the finale only on espn/disney+ and not ABC on a Thursday was massive blunder. On a sat prime time slot, they got 4.4 million, which netted about the same as FSU/BC (65th most watched college football) game this last year. They drew about 10 mil last night, which would be in the top 10 of regular season cfb games this last year. Good numbers for hockey, but still very bad for restoring a sport.

Restoring it where? Top six of revenue of all world wide professional sports leagues.

The Indian Cricket League is in top three of revenue and I bet they get less than six figures worth of viewers in the United States.

The world is a pretty big place.

Was a helluva lot better idea than the usual all star game dreck.
Maybe if Putin withdrawals - we can get a Russian team , and have a combined Nordic team .

They should expand the whole thing and do it over the course of several months instead of 2 weeks. Although maybe that’s what they will do with the World Cup.

Someone during the broadcast mentioned a summit series. That would be fun too. A 5 or 7 game series between the sUS and Canada would be fun.

Although maybe they should find a better coach than Sully. 2-2 record with this team is underachieving. Turns out the guy is who we thought he was. Lol.

Restore it to the top 4 watched/liked in the USA. And not let it slip behind soccer further or even Racing. https://news.gallup.com/poll/4735/sports.aspx

Questionable allegiance to veterans, the US left off some forwards who could have really made more of an impact that some veteran "role" players.

I like the idea of making it the Big 6- the Four Nations + Czechs and Russia. Maybe do a single-elimination with the standings based on IIHF standings at that point.

Nah - can’t have that much wear and tear for an exhibition
The 4 team round robin format is perfect

I don’t think coaching was the problem
As soon as bizarro world king Midas chimed in - was easy to bet on Canada victory, just like the Philly eagles winning .

Austin Matthews proves to be continually overrated .
Hughes(mid) is really good but struggled in this format

It was a cool event, but I wouldn't change it too much. The NHL did an excellent job of watering down outdoor games to the point it doesn't seem like anyone cares anymore.

Good point about the crowd in Boston. They lacked the energy we saw earlier in the tournament.

What the hell was boring about that game? It was competitive as hell, tons of shots on goal, lots of big time plays by big time players, a super intense OT…if that was boring, I can’t imagine your definition of exciting.

Two groups of three, everyone plays two games, two group winners meet for the championship.
That works, too. Regardless, I think they need to stick with the countries. I get people want “Team Europe” or “Team World” so all the top players can be included, but it just doesn’t feel the same then.

Saturday: US v Checko
Sunday: Russia v Finland
Monday: Checko v Sweden
Tuesday: Canada v Finland
Wednesday: US v Sweden
Thursday: Canada v Russia
Saturday: Group winners for all the marbles

Yup. Kreider I thought was not very good. And number 12 was terrible. don’t know if he was old or young but he was not very good

What happened is some dudes on this board have zero sense of humor. It disappeared after this was posted

And yes tor an all star game it was compelling Tv for what amounted to an exhibition. Not sure any other sport could duplicate this level of entertainment for an exhibition due to the unique nature of Hockey players

9 million viewers. Great for hockey. Tournament was a great idea. Had this non-hockey fan interested. The Miracle intro was awesome. I only watched it until Canada scored that flukey 1st goal. I guess it's not really that flukey but he seemed to have just flung it in the air and hoped for the best. Didn't even seem like a real shot but oh well. Hate to sound like an old guy but I had a hard time following the puck and turned it off. Need the Fox glowing puck back. If international hockey can continue this upward trajectory, perhaps it can match international soccer. The 2022 WC Final that didn't involve the home team, did 25 million.

Peak instead of deleting whole threads why not remove individual moronic comments like all other social media does.

It was competitive, but offensively boring. Not enough shots on goals (31/24 in an OT game for two offensive powers is pitiful), not enough goals, not enough odd man chances/break always, not enough power plays. It was a competitive game.

Great series. Great idea. Lastly McDavid did what stars do late after Mathews didn’t for the US. Thought Mathews was severely underwhelming in the series.

IMO, I wouldn’t expect a barn-burner in these best-on-best games when the players are giving their best efforts. There’s not much to exploit, especially with how good the defensemen were and how well the goalies were playing.

The only people who have a problem following the puck in a hockey game are the people who aren't really paying attention. If you were really paying attention and you couldn't tell where the puck was you probably ought to start next week with a call to your eye doctor and get an appointment.

If I’m Gary Bettman, the next TV contract needs to be an NFL-style deal that’s on ABC/ESPN, CBS, NBC, and FOX, even if that means no increase in revenue (for now).

With sports fans fed up over all the different streaming services required to watch, they need to take advantage of this momentum and make their product as easily-accessible as possible. The interest is there… now it’s time to strike while the iron’s hot. ESPN on Tuesdays and Thursdays, ABC on the weekend, NBC on Wednesdays, FOX on Fridays, CBS on Mondays, etc.

There is a 0.0% chance that NBC would have any interest at all in showing a game on Wednesdays. And a 0.0% chance that Fox would show a game on Fridays. And a 0.0% chance that CBS would show a game on Mondays. You literally could not PAY those channels to show games in prime time on weekdays.

There is no network that is going to put NHL games on their main channel on any night of the week other than maybe Saturdays.

Why not? NBC is going to air weeknight NBA games starting next season, FOX shows college sports on Friday nights, and each network has several timeslots that are averaging ~1M or less viewers. Put an NHL Monday night doubleheader on The Wall’s timeslot on NBC Poppa’s House’s timeslot on CBS, Going Dutch’s timeslot on Thursday nights on FOX, etc. If I’m the NHL, I’d actually take less money if it meant getting more over-the-air scheduling. They’ve already showed the networks that people will tune into hockey.

Either that, or they need TNT/TBS to go all-in on the NHL once the NBA’s deal expires after this season. Make it feel like the old NBCSN where games were on every weeknight. Regardless, they need to do something to take advantage of this in 2028.
