4th and 1 from your own 10 with 9:45 left

My beef was with the lack of urgency during that series. We huddled every play, ran the ball and the clock. If we knew that we were going to punt if we didn't make a 1st down, then I thought we should have gone no huddle to save some clock. We, at the very least, knew that we were deep in our own territory and would call conservative plays to try to prevent a turnover or a sack, which would decrease our chances of getting the 1st down.
I also hated the punt with 3 minutes left-that was terrible.

Sounds like you have real sports knowledge. I would have punted in that situation but understand how great it would have been had we gone for it and made it.
It's an interesting debate. So we punt best case we get it back with about 6 minutes? 7 maybe? I don't know, that's 7 using out tos, that's tough to get 2 td scoring drives while holding them to a 3 and out. Maybe it's hindsight but when our punt team came out, I knew then that our chances went from slim to none.

Yes, that was truly giving up. Down 16 with a little under 3 minutes to go, 4 th and 5. So what if you do not make it - the game is over. If you do, there is a least a chance to get a score, and then who knows.

Plug the scenario with coaches and ask them what they would do in that situation.

As I've said before, the mere fact that it is conventional wisdom does not mean that it is the correct decision. If the conventional wisdom on football was always right the game would be played the same way today as it was 50 years ago. It's not, because knowledge has been gained and strategies have evolved from the increase in knowledge. But someone has to be the first (and the second, and the third, etc) to say that conventional wisdom is wrong and do something different.

Interesting but what does your post have to do with the topic.
Sounds like something a clueless academic might post??
