Jeff Goodman just tweeted that 8 players will receive their releases to transfer today.

We only have 10 players returning so I'd guess everyone but Chukwuka and either Peace or George.

Guys, this is the Death Penalty. Pitt has self-sanctioned itself worse than the NCAA has sanctioned anyone since SMU football. If we have 2 players on April 1, I don't think anyone realizes what that means. That would scare the sh!t out of many coaches, even mid-majors. At this point, I'd doubt even a guy like Pitino, who is desperate for a job, any job would take it.

This is ridiculous. Heather has to make a big move. If she hires John Becker with only Peace and Chukwuka on the roster, 0-19 is assured next year (well thats assured for everyone) and probably 0-19 the next year. Probably would be looking at a 60 game ACC losing streak with just a few dozen fans at the games. This might be the end of Pitt basketball.

She has to hire Miller or Pitino or give Hurley an insane amount of money ($4 million?). If she doesn't, Pitt basketball is dead.

I'm assuming she is releasing them out of a good faith and the hope the will reconsider if the like the new head coach. Not sure why all 8 players would want to sit out a year if they don't have to because Pitt hires a new head coach they could be excited about playing for at Pitt.

It doesn’t say they are transferring at least not yet. Just permission. I don’t think it’s out of the question some could stay.

OK, so 8 players are considering transferring to the point where they can now be recruited by other teams. Maybe not all will leave but I'd guess the percentage of players who return to a school that they requested a release from is pretty low.

Wait a minute I thought the poster who broke this story on the board originally was a liar and a horse thief? He couldn't possibly be telling the truth because the numbers didn't add up, etc etc. He was a troll, a nitter, anti-Pitt, etc etc.

I find it really hard to believe they are going to be given releases before a new coach. That would be idiotic. If Lyke lets that happen AND misses on Hurley, this will be a royal screw up. Most of them will have essentially no options.

You're way over the top here. All of them have to wait until end of the semester to leave, all of them (except Luther, who graduated) would have to sit out a year unless they go to D2 or D3.

The new coach will be named before long and will be able to make his pitch to the players. Those that don't want to sit out a year will stay.

You need to f***ing relax.

You may be right. I don’t know if those stats are available. But 100% of Dixon’s recruits were granted a release and stayed.

Some also may go if they feel they’re over their head in the ACC. Plenty of guys on this board have been identified as such over and over.

And PS - no matter how much you or anyone else rants and raves they’re not hiring Pitino.

PITTSBURGH -- In addition to talented freshman Parker Stewart, seven other Pittsburgh players have asked for -- and are expected to receive -- their release on Friday to explore transfer options, multiple sources close to the basketball program told ESPN.

Sources told ESPN that senior Ryan Luther, sophomore Kene Chukwuka, and four more freshmen -- Marcus Carr, Khameron Davis, Terrell Brown and Shamiel Stevenson -- asked for permission to contact other schools on Friday afternoon. Luther will have to apply for and is expected to receive another year of eligibility.

Junior Malik Ellison, who sat out this past season after transferring from St. John's, also asked for his release. However, his situation is somewhat uncertain due to the fact that he didn't play last season after transferring.

That notwithstanding, it still doesn't really add up because JWF can't transfer unless he is going to graduate and Ellison would lose another year. Who would want a guy who got pushed out of a bad SJU program and then didn't play for 2 years and has to be on your docket for 2 years and can only play 1? He would have essentially 0 value. Samson, Peace, and Kene obviously cannot do better than Pitt. It is doubtful Stevenson or Davis can get even good mid major offers.

Maybe they are just all really, really stupid?

Transfers are at an epidemic rate. You think Carr bats an eyelash because he has to sit out a year because he wants to transfer to VCU (just using a random example).

Since most of these kids have a redshirt year left, if they don’t care about playing in the MAC or whatever, then yeah I’d transfer too.

He said 12 would transfer and they were getting lawyers.

I suspect that JWF and Ellison are not part of the 8.

There would have probably been defections anyway. And guys returning except Carr and Stewart can easily be replaced.

I think if the new coach is a good hire, and makes his case, that yes.... a player would choose to stay and NOT sit out than to go and have to sit out.

Hell... Even a stiff like Stallings got all the Pitt players who had been granted their releases to agree to stay.

You don't think a Hurley, Oats, Grant, or even Miller gets Carr to stay (if the coach wants them to stay)?

NO DECENT COACH (except a desperate one like Miller/Pitino) IS GOING TO SIGN UP TO LOSE THEIR FIRST FORTY ACC GAMES!

I am personally curious how much of this is being somewhat orchestrated by the fired coaches. We have seen Gages wife pen an anonymous letter, and Stallings lawyer make a public statement. Stallings could actually quell this right now by telling them to "trust the process" and then make a final decision after a new coach has met the team. Just my 2 cents

But Stallings and Cage don't give a crap about Pitt.

Noted in article above. Includes:

Stewart
Luther
Carr
Chukwuka
Davis
Brown
Stevenson
Ellison; with some uncertainly around him

Ellison really doesn't make sense considering he'd lose a year of eligibility if he transfers.

I don't think any of them (except maybe Miller) would want to risk their career. If they cant convince them to stay, they will go 0-38 in their first 2 ACC seasons. Nobody wants that. They'd have other job offers

We have a log jam of players who do not belong in the ACC (maybe about three exceptions), so I am hoping for a large number of transfers. Get a good coach and it'll be fine in the long run; we're in the ACC and have decent facilities and can have a good fan base.

I do think Stewart is pretty much gone for sure, and unfortunately, Ryan Luther will be a very valuable 5th year senior transfer prize if he wants to go. He could be a valuable 6-7 man on a good team.

A lot of it but that's immaterial.

It is standard for players to ask for and be granted releases. It is also typical that the majority of them (that the new coach wants) stay instead of sitting out a year somewhere else.

You're panicking over nothing.

If Hurley is named the coach, almost all of them... if not all of them.... will stay if Hurley asks them to.

The same is true for Oats, Grant, Musselman too. Even Miller, as tainted as he is.

I think luther proves his worth to the many doubting pitt fans if he is a free agent on the grad transfer market. All the "oh hes a guy off the bench for good teams" theory probably goes out the door. There are plenty of teams that will be interested in his services, gimpy foot or no gimpy foot.

He would probably be granted a hardship waiver. Transferred to a team/coach but the coach left and the team left.

I shouldn't laugh at this but when you said "the team left " I found that line incredibly funny in only a way a pitt fan can truly appreciate.

"I want out of my commitment because my entire team left and I don't want Ronny from trees hall being my point guard."
