Especially now that it might happen again in Happy Valley.

According to David Jones this morning...

Three points deserve to be reaffirmed:

1. Penn State is not the "destination job" it once was, no matter what lullaby you want to believe.

2. Coaches have been job-hopping for decades. You just didn't have to deal with it.

3. If you were a head coach in the college athletics business, you would be doing exactly the same thing as they do.

We need to remember this, because if Penn State is not a destination job with it's wealth of resources, etc. then we better be prepared to deal with Narduzzi saying goodbye fairly quickly. The reality is the chances of a coach leaving us are much greater than the chances of a coach leaving Cow U

I'm not sure destination jobs really exist anywhere anymore. Its a more like a destination before the next destination.
Agree, Top Programs will get rid of a Coach that doesn't win Title even going 11-1 every year over 5 years? OSU will get rid of you if you don't beat Michigan often enough?

Sometimes an University gets lucky and gets a great coach that stays there (TCU) or (Wisky Alvarez), that becomes an Athletic Director that keeps it going!

MSU, Baylor, and LSU are doing the same with Dantonio, Briles, and Miles! All have been offered but still stay so far!

I will admit, that I don't know, but I really think Coach Pat always wanted to come and will stay at Pitt so long as they will have him, and it is Just a Hunch! But great article and spot on!

PItt is a great job for a coach raising a family. The city of Pittsburgh has it all in entertainment, sports, medical facilities, educational opportunities, etc.

Hell, Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band performed at Heinz Hall last night. :) When is Ringo appearing in Happy Valley?

Go Pitt.

I will still argue that Notre Dame will always be THE destination job for anybody out there.

This is just not something new..And older Pitt fans should know full well.Coach Majors was here only four years won a NC and headed for Tenn.Yes,he came back, but...enough said...

But, this is because Majors returned to his alma mater and his successor Sherill wasn't paid the going rate to stay because, by then, we had Bozos running the athletic department. Hopefully this time they will be prepared to pay the going rate to keep a successful coach.

Paul McCartney performed in State College last week so I guess the Ringo analogy doesn't work :)

NCAA FB can be a tremendous cash cow for any major university. Any P5 school wants to finish undefeated, make the round of 4, and play for a national title. Results on the field are important, but sometimes equal if not second to financial ones. If stock is up (winning season), donations are flowing/boosters happy, and the brand is recognized/getting national traction - many coaches will be at their "dream job". Still, some programs if they don't hit that all three of those it is viewed as a failed season. Coaches in D1 P5 conferences for the most part are paid a hefty sum to oversee the FB team, and as they managing a big part of potential revenue are judged perhaps more harshly than they always deserve (unless your name rhymes with Odd Ham). The wrong AD - as many on this board have pointed out in the previous regime - can handcuff your favorite team. Loyalty goes as far as the checkbook does for many coaches, and when they leave for (in their words) a "destination job/dream job" - I am not always convinced it truly is that as much as it is something is not good enough financially for them to justify the pressure placed on them. I think Pitt is trending the right way in this area. Great first steps by Narduzzi have translated into on the field success. The improvements to the facility make a difference to current players and recruits. I hope that both the university and PN continue to agree on one basic tenet related to the program and finanically - Pitt is it!

A long, secure, healthy, and happy retirement is the only true destination job for any of us.

The grass is always greener on the other side... Except that it's not. The wise man knows this all too well. I choose to believe Narduzzi is a wise man.

If a man loves his job, loves the people with whom he works, loves the city in which he lives, has a family who is happy with where they are, is getting paid very well for his effort, then there is literally no reason for him to desire to go elsewhere.

Many have made the mistake of believing they were trading up when they took a higher profile and more lucrative job, only later to find themselves wishing they had not made the move.

I don't think any school is a destination job. You just hope your school finds a great fit and that coach decides that he wants to stick around for a long time. A perfect example is Gary Patterson at TCU. I don't think anybody would describe TCU as a destination job, but it seems like a perfect marriage and he seems to be content. How do you not love Gary Patterson?

Totally true. Only some people are wired so that they need to move on to other challenges. They seem to like that sort of thing and enjoy moving around.

Hasn't been true in decades. Relatively low pay, recruiting limitations, and unreasonably high expectations. In fact, since Lou Holtz retired and Davie took over, the Irish have whiffed on most of their top choices. I believe Kelly was the first hire since Holtz where they got the #1 guy they wanted.

I'm already preparing myself for the coach after Narduzzi to leave since a solid minority of Pitt fans seem to really want everyone else to accept it's a foregone conclusion that he's adios and very soon and undoubtedly the guy after him as well. I'm surprised no one has mentioned how it's so near to certain as to make no difference that Narduzzi's successor will leave after 3 years AT MOST as well.

I'm not sure where they're getting the basis for this very certain conjecture but hey they seem really really convinced, I might as well hop on board the bandwagon while it's still a minority. We need to get ready for Narduzzi to accept the Miami job 8am Friday morning after beating UNC. Just accept it boys and girls!

That doesn't do anything to attract them. At best, it helps keep them if they have grown to really embrace it, but every school in the country makes this argument for themselves, whether they are a smaller college town or city school with more attractions.

Now you've got me worrying about what we are going to do when the coach after the coach after Narduzzi leaves.

Exactly one of my points!

Les Miles winning Percentage since 2005 when he took the LSU job and stayed and turned down others, including Michigan:
Rank 5Th LSU 0.78030% 103 29 0 132

Florida countered with Urban Meyers that left, and Alabama countered with Nick Saban, and the rest of SEC has been looking to keep up with all of them until Florida got a New Coach this year. Spurrier had to quit too. Kiffin left UTenn and Auburn has had replacements too?

LSU only won that NCS because of Pitt beating WVU in 2007, the first loss Team to do it?

Coaching is up to the coaches. Meaning, some get comfortable and aren't egomaniacs, and some coaches just get bored, like challenges and are egomaniacs.

That being said, some schools are so resource and tradition rich, they may not be destinations because of the above differences in people, but they can and should be able to get the best coach that is on the market.

Where some of these schools fail when looking is "settling".

A win against Bama could change that. I know they seem to be more critical of Miles since coming up short in the BCS game a few years back. The kind of season Fournette is having though, they could ride him right to the championship game.
Could, but it is more personality and on field coaching "decisions" they are worried about. I think they would be crazy to push him out, but they are one of those fanbases that pretends they have always been good and an Alabama equal and just disregard they were essentially the same level as Ole Miss before Saban got there.

LSU fans are nuts!

His clock management sometimes sucks and his coaching decisions are often crazy as hell, but DAYUM... how many times does some of those wild calls seem to work out for him?

I LOVE Les Miles! Les is one of a kind. Goofy sometimes, but how can you not love Les Miles?!

How soon they forget Mike Archer, Gerry DiNardo, Curly Hallman....

Even Nick Saban left them for the Dolphins but found his Home at Bama! I know a guy down there that brought me to his Home in 1988 when I was at the Republican Convention. He had it painted in all LSU Colors with Big Tiger Cat Faces on his Garage Doors, and had a Man Cave Addition to his Ranch House built just to watch Football, and his Recreational Vehicle was the same that he went to every game to, and all he talked about was LSU and how his life revolves around them.

Just amazing and demanding fan base!

TD_6082 & Others,
Why do you think he turn down the Michigan Job so often? I wish Aged-Wolverine was here to comment too. Les was a Wolverine was he not?

Agree, but they think they are a blue blood (like ND, OSU, UA, UT, USC) for some reason. Funniest part to me: I think he really even fits the Cajun culture in a lot of ways, but man do some of them dislike him. Even some of the nuttier ones, who seem to me to be just as goofy as him. If they would have struggled this year, it would have been interesting to see what they did. But they should get 9-10 regular season (of only 11 for them this year) wins again this year and are still at the top of the SEC and NC picture in November.
