Everyone wants to fire Capel and if we could get a "guarantee," I'd be all for that but we're just a few pieces away from having a chance next year. If Capel does work in the transfer market and returns Hugley plus 3 of the 4 guards, we have a chance. I'd rather watch that team than a mid-major coach rebuild.

If we had Mo back for another year, we’d have a shot, bit losing Mo will really hurt. He has already improved so much in a few months here, imagine where he would be next year.

This board is absurd. After every win, we're on the brink of a tournament bid next year; after every loss, Capel is the worst coach to ever stand foot on hardwood.

Personally, I think we're a bad team that is more than a few pieces away. Hugley is a good player, and Burton can get hot at times. What else are you hanging your hat on for next year? Sibande looked absolutely clueless out there most of last year, but a few good games at the end has him being regarded similarly to how people felt about Femi this past offseason. I'd pump the brakes on that one.

It's a weird year for sure, but it's hard for me to envision the ACC sucking quite this badly again.

To be an NCAAT next year, we need:

- Hugley to be a star. This is possible

- A PG. We almost got West to commit to a hopeless team. This is possible.

- Burton, Femi, Horton, and Sibande to improve somewhat with perhaps one of them with a significant improvement. This is possible.

- A legit 4 in the transfer market. This is possible.

Mo should be in a gym working on his outside shot continuously. Not for Pitt or us fans, but for his future financial income. Just imagine his prospects if he had a more reliable outside shot.

- Louisville is a mess right now and West is part of the problem.

- The odds of all of them returning aren’t very good.

- Replacing Mo will not be easy, but even if you do there still isn’t enough talent to make the tournament in Year 5. Plus you have no young talent in the pipeline.

Yeah, but West sucks. JB, who we got after we didn’t get West, is much, much better.

He definitely has prospects. He is just scratching the surface of his potential.

We need a backup 5 as much as anything next year. Hugley can't be out there like he was against Virginia.

This is not close to a tournament team. Not even close, even with a few “pieces”.

Look around the country at the teams that are rolling and they are DEEP. Until we get to the point where we’re at least 10-11 deep with legit P6 talent, then we’re just peeing in the wind.

A new staff needs to come in, start building each class around 2-3 HS recruits and augment that with the portal to build the type of deep, versatile team that it’s going to take to get this right. Thinking that the current staff can just patchwork a team around Hugley next year is just delaying the inevitable

This is a new and interesting thought. Good thread.

Spot on, your username couldn’t be more accurate

Agreed. We just beat an absolutely awful and injury riddled Syracuse team by single digits at home. I'll certainly take the win, but I don't see what about that is prompting such bold pronouncements. It's basketball: Every team is going to win a few games (well, usually).

Need a competent point guard and a real good power forward along with some good shooters. Is that too much to ask. One thing games like last night do is give Capel something to point to talking to a recruit or a transfer.

Jamarius Burton has been running at 120+ ORTG Offensive Power Rating the last 7 straight games straight on average. Burton is averaging just under 16 points per game in ACC conference play while shooting 46% from the field and 44% from 3 in ACC play. He is also averaging 5 rebounds per game and 3 assist per game in ACC Conference play. He is also averaging 1 steal per game with a 2-1 assist to turnover ratio in ACC conference play.

Jamarius Burton is currently our best player and quite frankly with all due respect to Hugley, it isnt even close on an efficiency basis right now as Burton has taken his game to a whole new level. Burton has been very consistent and right now is performing like a 1st team all acc player. He is without question our most consistent offensive player game in and game out.

I get stupider every time I see SMF go on and on about “guarantees.”

Correct, West isnt that good. However, he was a fairly highly rated transfer thay had many options and also committed to what was a dumpster fire.

Also, I love Onye but West is significantly better.

Burton reminds me of Lamar Patterson a little. Could he break out and be an 18 PPG 2nd Team All-ACC guy next season? It is possible

💯💯💯 right.

We'll be in a better spot in the backcourt with Horton and Sibande back, but still need a PG. Need more 3-point threats. And have to find a way to replace Gueye. Really too bad he doesn't have another year of eligibility.

Horton and Sibande could provide the 3 point threats but yes, we definitely need a PG. BballinsiderfromPitt likes that guy from IUP. Is he a true PG or more of a scorer who just happens to be the guy who brings the ball up the court?
