A couple recruiting notes heading toward the weekend:
- Hykeem Williams is committing on Friday, and as you've surely seen elsewhere, Florida State seems to have the momentum. That's where I expect him to commit, and we'll see where it goes from there (i.e., we'll see if he keeps to his plan of taking additional official visits). Whatever happens, I don't think there is any question that Pitt was heavily involved. It's been pretty remarkable how much Pitt's involvement has been ignored more or less all summer, despite Williams taking two unofficial visits and one official visit. Even into this week, I've still been reading write-ups that leave Pitt out altogether. I suppose that comes with the territory, but it's still somewhat surprising because it flies in the face of the reality of his recruitment - the reality being that Pitt was very involved.
To that end, I do think that Tiquan Underwood, Pat Narduzzi and Charlie Partridge (and probably a lot of other people) deserve a lot of credit here. As you know, Pitt doesn't usually get in this deep with five-star guys, but they did with Williams, and that's all a product of the work they put in.
- Without Williams, Pitt's receiver class for 2023 still has three commitments, and I think there's a good chance they add one more on Saturday when Daidren Zipperer commits. Zipperer is a teammate of Pitt commit Shadarian Harrison (who's a really impressive athlete himself) and took an official visit over the summer. He announced a top six of Pitt, UCF, USF, South Carolina, BYU and Utah, although he recently said it's more like Pitt, UCF, USF and BYU. He took official visits to UCF, Pitt and USF and he says he wants to visit Utah - who doesn't appear to be in his top four - in early October.
I'm not sure what's going to happen with all of that, but I do think Pitt's got a really good shot of landing Zipperer. He's not Hykeem Williams, but he's a well-built playmaker who has three receiving touchdowns in four games this season - and he threw a 40-yard touchdown, too. Check out the highlights below; I think he can be a good addition to the class.
