Last week we reported our sources indicated that they felt the incident involving defensive end Joe Clermond would be resolved by the proper authorities. We were told he passed a drug test and they were confident this matter would go away over time. To be but quite frank I thought it might take another week or two. Yesterday the Post-Gazette reported the charges against Joe had been dropped. We have linked the PG article in case you missed it.
One of our “birdies” stopped by yesterday to say it was his understanding that safety Elijah Fields will be suspended for the 2007 season resulting from his off the field incident. Fields is still in school. If he everything goes as planned he will simply take a redshirt year and have three years of eligibility remaining. Fields is very talented and he is capable on playing on Sundays. Keep your fingers crossed he works hard in the classroom and stay out of trouble. No formal announcement has been made. We are not sure when it will be but a good guess is at the start of training camp next week. We indicated in a War Room two weeks ago that the Media Day remarks by the coach did little to comfort those in attendance and it appears they were right.
There have been a number of rumors on the message boards the past few days about possible problems with another player. It appears this story started with a source that is not credible. The best we can tell at this time is this will become a non-issue and simply go away. We don’t think there is anything to be gained by speculating over what appears not to be an issue at this time. We will let you know if we hear anything else but at this point it appears to be a non-issue that should simply go away.
Most football programs go through problems. You wish they didn’t happen but we are dealing with young men (often teenagers) who often don’t think through the consequences of their actions. They fail to realize that many fans are watching and that their actions will attract attention.
There is a story on the Ticker indicating Nic DiLillo has changed his mind once again and has committed to Ohio State. This guy is starting to remind me of Mike Mangold out of Florida who once said his commitment was a solid as oak. He committed to three schools before ending up a Florida. Today Mangold is no longer on the Florida roster. When we heard Ohio State had offered we heard words of reassurance but did not like it. We said we would continue to monitor the situation because the Buckeyes are a thousand pound gorilla right now in the state of Ohio. The importance of landing Hubie Graham just got kicked up a notch.
