Funny Pitt does not gain a simple yard for 4 straight plays and all off us lament the stupidity of it all.

Pitt gains a simple yard and all is forgotten, joy reigns and the Va Tech boards light up with "why the hell did we kick that meaningless extra point after the five yard penalty"

A simple yard.

O'Neill was a yard short on his trick play. Henderson was a yard short on his fumble last week. How many times did DiNucci slide a yard short of the sticks. We were a yard short multiple times against friggin' YSU in the opener and couldn't convert. Been a theme from the beginning.

When you think about it even further, Pitt was about 4 1/2 yards away from being 6-5 right now. Talk about a game of inches.

We were a few plays last year from having a couple more losses, so maybe this is karma's way of evening everything out.

We really should have one guy on the OL who can drive a defender backwards or one running back who can win a collision. We seem to have neither. This would all be irrelevant if the one guy who can get open could catch the ball. On a good note, we finally have a QB, he just needs more reps.

rookie qb's fault in this case though. A veteran in the huddle would have implored Bookser to take out the defensive tackle like a parking kiosk on Forbes Ave and he'd buy him a fifth of Wild Turkey after the game. Sometimes these lads need the appropriate motivation.....

success and coaching careers are defined by inches (or 36 in this case). a small but distinct difference between success and failure in sports and in life. OK, that's as deep as I get for a Monday in a shortened work week.

It's not one on one up front in that situation. It's 6 on 11. 11 better athletes than our 6.

If a run play, the play call should have been run action right witha O'Neill sealing his edge and Pickett keeping and sprinting for the left pylon, or play action and let the TE hold and release for an uncontested TD. Instead, it was "all we need is a yard". That;s great except when the other team's front 7 hasn't given you that yard all day, due to their physical dominance over your OL. We also couldn't afford an unsuccessful run on 1st down due to the running clock, even with a time out to burn.

it was a 50 second clown show.

Yes, it is a stupid thing.

And at the end, is 5-6 that much better? No, the negative ninnies would still be upset and calling for everyone to be fired.

We played a very good game on the road against a very good opponent.

We had players like Pickett, Pine, Campbell, Weaver, Herndon, Ffrench, Reynolds all play very well.

We have some reasons to be optimistic. We have some talent growing up. I was completely pessimistic about the QB position (which we have seen some bad years due to this in the past 30 years), and really thought we would have to watch DiNucci the next 3 years. I am beyond pleased to see Pickett show some skills. Those that are questioning the guys first real game played in a hostile environment are nuts. The kid was one centered cat until that last minute. Give him credit for a game well played. That in and of itself is reason to be optimistic. We still have Hall and a good line coming back, and defense has been SOOOO much better

? Haven't seen any criticism of Pickett. On the contrary, he has been showered with praise. Where are you getting this?

Funny how Pitt fans are in an uproar because we were 56 inches from victory when most thought we would be 56 points from victory.

It was a yard and a half. Should have said 54 inches.
uh, but since the title of the post was titled "a yard" and I was eloquently waxing philosophically along those lines you should not have messed with it...
.

At the end of the game down at the goal line, coaches needed to take into account what happened all game. Hall gained 0.3 yards per carry. Thats right, less than one yard per carry in the game. So what do our coaches do, they give him three carries and he gets stuffed each time.

Agree - the box is even more crowded at the goal line. They needed to spread out the defense if they wanted to run. The clock management and play calling at the goal line were below the line.

What's "funny" is that we were unable to gain any yards on the ground the entire game. Keep in mind that we couldn't run on VaTech when they were in their standard defensive package.

Then we get on the 1.5 yard line and we put in our goal line run package and we're facing VaTech's goal line defense. And we run right into the teeth of that defense. What part of this scenario doesn't scream "stupid play calling"?
