ACC Facts

Excellent by Hancock. But, the ACC needs to hire a consulting firm to improve NET and scheduling strategies.
They also need to, and the one thing I’ll give you credit for, is hire better coaches. The SEC WHIZZED passed them on the hiring front. Hiring Kenny Payne at Louisville was a travesty. GT needs to hire a BASKETBALL coach like Ron Hunter. If ND hires Shrew would be a huge win for them. In order to get more bids, the ACC needs to hire better. Then they will get more players, wins etc. when the SEC invested in hoops, they took a lot of ACC interest.

Props to SMF for his first correct post on this site.

Correct for this post or the one about saying the SEC beat us by hiring better coaches?

For sure, the SEC went big on coaches. The ACC hires lottery tickets. They got lucky with Forbes and Young but its not like thiee guys are lighting it up. The Payne hire, I liken to Mike Haywood. He just seems completely in over his head. Louisville needed to hire a big-time coach. Maybe pull an SEC coach. Buzz, Pearl, Musselman. You need to at least try.

GT - I have always liked Ron Hunter. He's safe to the point where they will be at least Wake level but not sure he could elevate them to SEC status.

ND getting Shrewsbury would be big time but PSU prints money and can give him a blank check. I think it'll be Pat Kelsey, which is still ok. Didnt you say that?

Earl Grant is good but you are limited in what you can do at BC. Really, they should kick them out and add UConn as long as UConn promises a big football commitment.

Keatts sucks. Hubert Davis sucks. Adrian Autry is going to suck. Leonard Hamilton cant coach but can recruit. Just a bad league of coaches.

I don’t expect Kelsey at this point. He can wait another year and be very picky on what job he wants. I expect ND to hire Shrew or Bryce Drew.

I think Keatts is fine. Earl Grant is fine. But yes, Hubie and Autry are puzzling choices.

Obviously Payne is one of the worst hires in HM history.

If I’m Louisville I’m paying Oats or Musselman 8 mill a year next off-season.

I’m not sure theres any coach with ties to Atlanta better than Hunter that can get it popping at GT.

Dennis Gates at Mizzou is another one the ACC missed out. For whatever reason, he wanted to be the one to succeed Ham at FSU. Now his buyout is like 30 million at Mizzou and they’re unbelievable in year 1

I wasnt big on Gates but looks like I'm wrong. I did say Louisville should offer Oats.

With the hiring of alums, I always ask "how would Pitt feel if this guy was hired here." If Pitt hired Hubert Davis, Kenny Payne, Adrian Autry, there would be Stallings-level outrage but they were all good enough for much better programs?

I posted about this exact same thing the other day without the video feed. Hancock has been very vocal about Pitt getting in all week and he makes a ton of good points in the video. Carlos Boozer who is on this program as well said last night Pitt should be in no questions asked and is looking forward to seeing their name called later today.

For every dollar Louisville can spend on a basketball coach, Alabama can spend five.

I wonder how much Louisville and florida states ooc performance affected the net rankings for the rest of the league. My guess is it dropped every other team down 10-15 spots. That is the flaw of the net

Can? Maybe. But in reality, when Forbes did their rankings of the most valuable college basketball teams a couple years ago they concluded that Louisville's three year average profit was $29 million and Alabama's was $5 million. In revenue it was Louisville, $54 million and Alabama $19 million. Or in other words, Louisville's PROFIT is greater than Alabama's REVENUE. By a lot.

The only way that Alabama can even come close to competing with Louisville in basketball spending is for Alabama to use football money for basketball. I wonder how that would fly with your average Alabama fan?

That was then, this is now. I’ve watched a couple Bama games this year. Jam packed arena, raging crowd. Oates has shown them what being a basketball powerhouse looks like.

Louisville on the other hand is swirling the drain rapidly as a program. It’s not a “rich” school or athletic department by any stretch.

Certainly Bama can spend football revenue to reinforce basketball. They’d do that without hesitation now to remain elite and supplant UK as the top program in the SEC. Just wait unto you see Oates’ next contract.

Do you really think Saban and the rampant Alabama football sector want Oates to take the spotlight? Big egos and jealousy usually prevent these things from happening. They might play nice in front of the cameras and say the right things, but behind closed doors it can be different.

I think the people in charge at Bama don’t think that small and are smart enough to see that they can have their cake and eat it too with both sports, and they’re on the brink of doing so.

The landscape of college basketball has changed and is changing. The timing has never been better for a program like Bama, that has the resources and the motivation, to force its way into the small club that has dominated the sport for several decades, and stay there.

The people that are in charge are the big money boosters. It will come down to them. They have to win something of significance (National Title) in basketball before we find out. Maybe Oates wants the spotlight on himself and a school like Louisville or Kentucky would give that to him. Their arenas seat 7k more people and basketball is king at their school.
