---Capel is recruiting a 2021 6-11 5-star Center from Richmond, VA (Efton Reid). The player took an unofficial last year and seems interested. He is quoted as saying that Capel wants an all around post player who can score inside, rebound and be a rim protector on defense to pair up with Hugley at PF.

IMHO, this suggests that Capel's ultimate goal in roster building is to get away from the 1-in, 4-out system he has used (or has had no choice but to to use) the past two seasons.

I think the staff wants more flexibility in the lineups that it can put out on the floor depending on the opponent. Sometimes, that's 2 guards, 2 wings, and a forward; sometimes, it's 1 guard, three wings, and a forward, sometimes that's two guards, a wing, and two forwards; etc.

For the past two years, Pitt hasn't been able to have that flexibility. I think we're getting to the point where we do. Obviously, getting one of the big ticket 2021 post players (Reid, Sanogo, Njoku, and there are probably a few others I'm missing) would be a big step towards getting to that point.

I enjoy your contributions but I think you are 100% wrong. Capel wants the best players, period. If he could get 2 stud bigs and put them both out there, he would......and so would everyone else. The reality is there arent enough stud bigs to go around and there is an unlimited supply of 6'5-6'7 SFs or "Stretch 4s" so most teams have no choice but to play 4 out, 1 in.

I don't disagree. There are plenty of opponents--especially in the ACC that playing a 1-4 against is far from ideal. And, even when going 1-4, I suspect Capel would like one or more of the 4-out guys to be taller than 6-5 to 6-6 --> Thinking Collier (6-8), Jeffress (6-7) and Trey Murphy i(6-8), if we should land either or both of the second two.

SMF--Thank you for your opinion. I believe you will be proven wrong over time.

Good coaches base their offense around what they have player and
talent wise. Capel so far as had very poor Bigs. He has put one of
them on the floor out of necessity, and put a combination of guards
and wings on the floor at the same time.
I'm not going to get into who's saying what in this thread, but if Capel
had two legit Bigs, one he could put in the paint, and one as a PF
there's no doubt in my mind they'd both be on the floor together.
If Hugley were to start, and 6'10 Brown could prove himself as a
PF he'd play at the same time. We have four Bigs now...it'll be
interesting to see if Capel goes in that direction. The way things
have been, Capel basically has had no other choice than to go 1-4.

Agree.

For Capel, I don't think it matters much. We did a lot of 4 out. But we also set up in Horns quite a bit. But we didn't really run anything out of horns.

Capel is going to give the players a lot of freedom and allow them to find spots and make their own decisions.

I strongly disagree with this idea when you have a young inexperienced team with a lower IQ, little outside shooting, and a point guard that thinks like a scoring guard. Now we had those things, we would be very hard to prepare for and our offense would be very tough. But we don't have those things yet.

But it's what Capel does. So we can go two bigs in the starting lineup or one big. But we will never play a structured offensive system with that has continuity and predictable movements. So I would be just fine having Hugley and another athletic tall post down low. Would help tremendously with offensive rebounding.

Your explanation makes a lot of sense. The only thing I'm not sure of is
what Capel's preference is. You seem to feel that what we've been doing
is what he'll continue to do regardless of personnel. I agree with how you
explained the make up of our inexperienced team and how we ran our
offense given what we had.
Question....think he might change given a different make of players
with different skills?

What does Coach K do with Duke? Wouldn’t Capel do something similar if he had similar (but not equal of course) talent on his roster to work with?
