the vagaries (ups and downs) normal to college hoops individual game results?

To be fair to the team and coaches they lost by 4-5 points less than predicted the past two games. They were predicted to lose by 9.5 and 10 and lost by 4 and then by 5.

It could mean they are getting a little better or maybe it was just a lucky variance or the opponents playing down to the competition?

We shall wait and see.

Well, I can see that we had a little better defensive intensity, but we also played two pretty inconsistent teams, so that always helps. I don't see much in the box scores that screams improvement, but the overall score indicates the possibility.

Improvement? With many freshmen who normally would be redshirted, sometimes showing a little more skilll, ability, or IQ in later season games is encouraging.

Brown made some nice blocks and is showing that he can high point a rebound (we didn't see this earlier). Even when he gets blocked trying to dunk, it should be a learning experience.

Carr displayed some of the clutch (clock winding down, hand in face) scoring he had shown earlier in the season.

Davis used his wingspan to rip some rebounds down low in the 2-3 zone and even tallied a block. He also reinforced that he can hit 3-pointers in the offensive rotation. I haven't been able to spend much time looking at his shooting form, but he might develop into a very nice outside shooter. Fingers crossed.

Coach Stallings isn't afraid to do what it takes to get points. Going into the game, I thought JWF might see a lot more time in the high post, and I thought Stallings might keep him there after he made a nice foul line jumper early in the game. Putting Carr in the high post to crack the zone and distribute was worth trying, and I give the coach credit for making the move. Although Carr sometimes didn't perform at a high level, it shows his versatility and probably an indication of being highly coachable.

JFW also had a good rebounding day, even if it were against some of those skinny SU bigs.

Brown is improving, Davis has been okay all season but now is beginning to be a little more assertive. Carr has had a lot placed on his shoulders, as a freshman combo guard trying to play PG on a very inexperienced team. I was a James Robinson fan, but I shudder to think about how he would have looked as freshman on this team. Even when playing poorly, I have a hard time criticizing Carr.

betting lines are not predictions, they are perceptions of feelings

They are just so widely inconsistent - the entire roster - game to game, half to half (e.g. If the Parker that played at Syracuse showed up in the same way for the home game vs Cuse, Pitt could probably steal a win). Maybe it is part of them being freshmen, but I struggle to see the consistent improvement. Perhaps Luther's absence to be a steadying influence on the floor is more acutely missed than most people realize.
