Good post. The offense really was a breath of fresh air, and the best part of it was all those red zone TDs, something we have never seen before at Pitt, and something even the better teams struggle with. That offense kept the defense off balance, guessing all game long. I found this article encouraging, in that Dooz and Watson obviously intend to try to keep Canada's offense, the terminology, etc. When I look back at this year & how our offense took off I find myself thinking how amazed Canada & Peterman (after just 1 season) were at the discipline of taking care of the football, minimizing the motion, off sides, holding penalties, etc.
I mean that offense was run as a thing of beauty as far as this fan is concerned. I mean I have seen Pitt teams running far less complicated offenses implode before the ball was ever snapped.
This year we had RB's & WR/TE's constantly in motion to say nothing of all the O-Line calls & mov't they went thru.....I really believe that is where recruiting smart, disciplined, self motivated individuals has really benefitted this program & will continue down the road.
I only hope that this was the beginning of a way of life in the Panther Program where all the players take pride in the discipline of being a low penalty, mistake free, disciplined, intelligent offense.
Also I like how Watson mentioned adopting all the terminology, formations, etc....while also stressing that we keep the tempo. Because I thought that the up tempo addition to the offense really benefitted us at moments this past year, Especially after we hit on a big play we would get down the filed & get a quick snap to catch the opponent off guard, out of wind & not w/ the correct personal.
That offense deserves all the credit they get because in my 40 plus years watching closely this one was of the most exciting offense's I can ever remember w/ multiple different players being crucial contributors.
It was a whole lot of fun to behold....H2 PITT !!!
Agreed. The only thing I wonder/question is the hesitation early in the season to open things up a little more for Peterman. However, that is 100% hindsight because before the year, I had the opposite worry that Peterman would have to be carefully handled. All in all, a very good season in totality from Canada and Peterman. When I look back at this year & how our offense took off I find myself thinking how amazed Canada & Peterman (after just 1 season) were at the discipline of taking care of the football, minimizing the motion, off sides, holding penalties, etc.

He did make progress, but the playbook and plays called were much more trusting of Nate in the 2nd half of the season. I'm not sure if his improved play and the more trusting play calling was chicken or egg. That is my point. I don't know that it necessarily would have put the D on the field more, it might have done the opposite in a game like UNC because it could have helped us control the ball and clock more and kept their O off the field.Except that Nate made real progress during the season. Not sure if they could have opened it up sooner. Also, opening it up may have meant the D would be on the field sooner and more often....not a good thing.

Great post! Couldn't agree more! When I look back at this year & how our offense took off I find myself thinking how amazed Canada & Peterman (after just 1 season) were at the discipline of taking care of the football, minimizing the motion, off sides, holding penalties, etc.

Could not agree more.....had Nate & Canada gotten on the same page earlier like they did entering the Clemson game no telling how this season would have unfolded.Agreed. When the passing game showed it had some folks to do a credible job with Orndoff, Henderson, Weah et.al it made it easier for Nate. I was impressed how he could go through his progressions effectively and quickly...after last year habit of staring down TB. His footwook was good and he was decisive with the ball.He did make progress, but the playbook and plays called were much more trusting of Nate in the 2nd half of the season. Superb Post and joy to read, and why the Lair is the place to share and learn together, Thank You!When I look back at this year & how our offense took off I find myself thinking how amazed Canada & Peterman (after just 1 season) were at the discipline of taking care of the football, minimizing the motion, off sides, holding penalties, etc. I mean that offense was run as a thing of beauty as far as this fan is concerned. I had the same worries but they went away in the Penn State, OKST, and UNC games. Now I am worried can Coach Pat & Watson match Canada's Unique abilities of "WHEN" he calls the "RIGHT PLAYS" at the exact timing he did so well all year long without major mistakes like Miami & NU and like Canada did at Clemson.Agreed. The only thing I wonder/question is the hesitation early in the season to open things up a little more for Peterman. Both cost Top 25 Final Ranking, but Coach Pat has Pitt closer and if Pitt keeps developing an OC, QB, TE, and Defense is fixed. Could be the next step towards ACC Coastal. The Players attitudes are so focused on Playing Great Football and with better talent ready to play too.Could not agree more.....had Nate & Canada gotten on the same page earlier like they did entering the Clemson game no telling how this season would have unfolded.
But having said all of this I still am really disgusted, upset, confused about how we represented ourselves in the past 2 Bowl games. I am not one that dismisses even the lowest Bowl game as being inconsequential.....those games need to be taken w/ absolute all hands on deck attention, intensity & passion. That is this Pitt Fan's No. 1 issue w/ Coach Duzz...and really 1 of my only issues w/ Duzz all things considered.
H2 PITT !!!
Yep, if you recall it took Chaney & Nate to learn that in 2015, but Canada & Nate perfected it better in 2016. Now Pitt Starts all over again with OC Watson & Browne, Big MAC Attack, and the Doozz? I really like how coach Pat just comes right out and says, I need an OC that stays at Pitt. PN knows Coaching Stability is so important to continue to Recruit Better Talent .When the passing game showed it had some folks to do a credible job with Orndoff, Henderson, Weah et.al it made it easier for Nate. I didn't like the bowl losses, either, but this year, the injuries in the bowl game really killed us. No, Conner, Johnson, or Peterman is pretty tough to recover from in game. DiNucci did get us that short field TD, but with 3 turnovers and a missed FG in the 2nd half after those 3 players went out, it was pretty tough to win that game.Could not agree more.....had Nate & Canada gotten on the same page earlier like they did entering the Clemson game no telling how this season would have unfolded.

Spot on, Pitt still can't afford key injuries, Pitt had the Players on offense all year long until the Bowl Game, one point many miss is the Defense did have major injuries all year long.I didn't like the bowl losses, either, but this year, the injuries in the bowl game really killed us.
