I read all the comments from newspaper articles, social media and here in the past. The concerned Mom's and Dads of little kids caught my attention as I'm a Dad and have friends that sit with me with kids from 4-12 and we all brought toddlers at one point. We are all vocal at games, have a few beers tailgating and have a great time at the games.

We all go to Pirate games with beer served and Penguins games. One can text a number anonymously to complain about a rowdy drunk and problems are always resolved. I am not worried at all about problems and if I was a parent, I would honestly be more concerned about the volume of Music ( which I like ) than the drunk guy from Blawnox.

Pitt should create a family friendly section that does an even better job of catering to kids. I'm guessing there are about 250-500 people upset about this that could go to the new section under the jumbo tron. Send the Pitt Panther over there often, have a clown inside making balloon animals, have very kid friendly food options at a cheap price. Often times people complain just to complain and Pitt can say we provided an even better option. Kids getting a high five after a TD could be a nice scene.

For all the complaints one may hear, I'm guessing it results in losing 50 total people out of more than 50,000 season tickets.

The games will be louder with fan's reaction and a beer or two does that from my experience. People who honestly are mad should vote with their tickets not being renewed and the Pitt Ticket office will refund your money. Those tickets will quickly be sold.

I believe adding beer will creates a home field advantage that the players will notice whether you want to be honest and admit it or not.

It's another revenue stream and in the arms race of college football, that's a very good thing. I will gladly pay $8.50 for a beer an a 90 degree muggy afternoon vs. Villanova. I'm more concerned about the obese diabetic guy drinking 4 Coca Cola Jumbo cups from a health perspective than my 2 beers.

Good post!
Not concerned about the fat guy chugging Jumbo Cokes since you probably wont have to worry about his later in the season or next year!
They sell beer at most family events, fairs, amusement parks, etc.
Its the agenda driven people who object to stuff.

If Pitt ever played a game on a Saturday later than noon, maybe there is a tad bit of concern. Thankfully I guess, that will never be the case.

There will always be people who react negatively to change of any kind. You can introduce a cure for cancer, but you can guarantee that there will be someone somewhere who will find something negative to say about it.

I used to work with a woman like that; she got so bad that no one would tell her where they were taking their vacations, because she'd always find something bad to say about the locations, wherever they were. A true "Debbie Downer" if there ever was one......

I've had one issue at Heinz Field. I take my wife and two boys. Two years ago, At the time they were 8 and 10. I forget what game, but there was a guy 4 rows behind us swearing and yelling homophobic slurs. Only time, I ever had to tell someone to shut up and sit down. Obviously, no beer sold.

This is one more time, than I ever had to at a Pirate game.

I can't see selling beer automatically ruining the environment.

I've always said, the Pirates get it. They cater to young children. The kids go for the event, not the game.

From someone who grew up near there, Sharpsburg is a much better example to use for dumb yinzers, but the name "Blawnox" itself sounds dumber.
LOL, blawnox is fun to say with a yinzer accent.. Its just ironic that it's always the town referenced in these examples.. Dunlap in morning seems to always make fun of yinzers and he always says they are from Blawnox.. Feel bad for those guys

The thing that makes me laugh is the pussssies that are scared o go to Steelers games! I go there and drink at least a 12 pack by game's end, nothing bad ever happens. Maybe a couple people cuss! So what? Football should prioritize drunk adults over "families", DRUNK ADULTS are the primary demographic/customer of football/tailgating culture-DRUNK ADULTS is who built them the empire, and should be catered to primarily over toddlers and 5th graders! That said, I've been to maybe 70 Steelers games and only witnessed 2 fights up close and one of those was in Baltimore.

I've been to a few pitt games at Heinz, have seen some things, some actions by a few, that really made me sickening. One was in '09, pitt v. Cincy, saw a guy keep kicking it to the same guy deep and the guy kept returning it for TDs.. Made me disgusted, not sure if he was drunk or not.. Also at a Pitt vs WVU game in 2010. Saw about 80 college aged kids, dressed up in pitt football gear, completely give up and let wvu manhandle them with zero efforts.. Gonna assume they were all very much inebriated..

I never understood the mentality that serving overpriced alcohol will turn a stadium into a drunken brawl. Chugging a 12 pack in the parking lot is fine but if a guy buys a couple of $10 beers during the game he is going to be belligerent.

i don't know if anyone is scared as much as they don't want to expose their kids to it. Pitt79, I've done it all bro, you name any obnoxious abhorrent drunken act, I will have at least two stories where I've not only done it but done it not wearing pants. With that said, I've been to countless steeler games and now that I have 2 small children, I wouldn't expose my kids to it.. Been to a couple steeler/ravens games in Baltimore sporting a steeler jersey while with a date and I wouldn't do it again. I'd go with buddies but not with kids or a wife, just not fun environment to be in without some buddies..

You've seen 2 fights in over 70 steeler games? I question that. Cant say I've been to one steeler game where I didn't see one fight. Not to the death matches, I mean we are not talking rumbles between the greasers and the socs but some sort of physical confrontation.. Hey, no big deal, I don't think the nfl or the steeler ownership should change things to appease my 4 and 7 year old. Plenty of places that are kid-friendly, nfl games are not one of them.. I compare it a fancy restaurant not wanting children inside, I completely get it, as a parent im not offended..

Dont take your kids to the grocery store, most restuarants, or kennywood. Beer is in all those family venues. This is football games. The people want this. Sorry to offend the families. My family has done just fine watching their dad have a beer. Non Issue times a 100.

These two responses plus what Big Marty says is the direction Pitt needs to move if we are genuinely going to change the crowd into a true home field advantage. College Football players genuinely feed off the atmosphere and the atmosphere since opening resembles Disney World and that is really a bad thing. My hope would be that it's a smooth transition this year and people get comfortable that this is more adult entertainmenment and that's not a bad thing. People are going to get loose with some liquid lubrication and start to have a little fun. The cameras are going to love it, people who are on the fence about going might just see the delicious beer sweating on a Sunny afternoon and say " let's go to the Pitt game next week". I want to forget about my serious life for 3 hours and have some fun.

Now here comes the " I don't need to have a beer to have fun crowd". It's simply BS for sports fans in general. There is a reason Beer Commercials dominate sports along with cameras for some reason always catching that guy or girl in the crowd enjoying that beer.

People rip some of the comments ( in the past before the decision) because they sound like a knucklehead saying it. We'll sign me up for being a knucklehead for 3 hours. It's fun.

Maybe a few less kids might be the best thing for Home Field and maybe that friend you bring along and entertain on a Saturday afternoon is better for a Home Field.

The revenue to fund scholarships so it's never an expense again on the balance sheet is what you should also have in mind for Pitt Football. My wife and I will likely each have 2 beers each per game X 7 games X $8.50 = $238 extra revenue. Let's say Pitt keeps half it's $119 per year. Layer on a multiple like others like us and it's a nice revenue stream to fund scholarships.

I bet some mixed drinks find their way to Pitt Football next year.

What I'm saying is that you're right. I'm not taking my kid there. And not because I fear for her, it wouldn't bother me if she heard cussing or saw a fight. She has shown me videos of fights on her iPhone that happened in her school. But the point is, I'm not wasting a $100 Steelers ticket on her! She's not even interested, wouldn't even pay attention, doesn't care really about any sports in general, other than the one she plays, soccer. My argument is, it's not really for kids, or families, the demographic group that built the NFL is hard drinking adults, the people who started and maintain the 7am BBQs in the parking lot, the specially made campers with beer taps sticking out the side, the people who fill multiple dumpsters with beer cans at the entrance to the stadium! that's football, it's not bringing families and kids, they can come if you want to bring them, but that's not who it's for. And why should they ruin it to cater to them? And it is true, I've only seen 2 fights ever at a Steelers game, I really haven't seen many, I mean real physical fights, punching etc. or are you including verbal sparring? You say you see fights every time you go, I question that, my experience is almost never have I seen a fight.

OK, I will admit... I changed my mind on this. I was against all alcohol sales, but in all seriousness, I can see way it is not only OK, but preferable. I do think more grad students and early 20s type would go. I remember finally being able to drink and going to Pitt games and feeling I was a kid again in a bad way.
I agree that almost no one will be totally out of line, or at least like a Pirate game. I will say though that evening steeler games for me are a no-go. Not only for my kids, but there are far too many drunks that aggravate me and aggravate even more when our team is playing poorly. But... such is life, even sober people are vastly aggravating.

damn, I agree with 100% of this. I thought we were debating something here, we both have the same take on it..

I don't have a problem with Heinz Field serving beer at Pitt games. It's the responsibility of the individual to drink responsibly and not act like a fool while drowning in beer. But I do know I'm not spending $8.50 on a shit beer at a football field. I doubt they're serving any of the better brews. Unless you call Yuengling or Coors one of those. LOL!!!
