Reports: Michigan DC D.J. Durkin a 'strong candidate' for Maryland job

Maryland has reportedly reached out to a lot of candidates, but one name has emerged as a frontrunner as the school's next head football coach.

Both Yahoo! Sports' Pat Forde and Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman are reporting that Michigan defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin "has emerged as a strong candidate" for the Maryland job. According to Forde, Durkin "met recently with Maryland officials" and "the interview went well," but no offer was made.

Durkin re-joined Jim Harbaugh at Michigan after serving on his staff at Stanford (2007-09) before joining Will Muschamp at Florida (2010-2014), even serving as the Gators' interim coach for the 2015 Birmingham Bowl win.

Maryland was one of the first Power Five schools to remove its coach, firing Randy Edsall on Oct. 11. Since then, athletic director Kevin Anderson hasn't been saying much to the media, but one can assume he's been doing a lot of research on potential candidates for the job.

Comments from university president Wallace D. Loh shortly after Edsall's dismissal suggested that Maryland might look for an offensive-minded coach to energize the fan base with points on the scoreboard. While there are plenty of head coaches and coordinators boasting offensive resumes at the moment, Durkin may be a safer hire thanks to his proven ability to build a defense and win battles on the recruiting trail. You may need to score points to win conference titles elsewhere, but you need a good defense, first, to win in the Big Ten.

Maryland having a good coach doesn't really help us either if we are recruiting in the same regions.
You forget one thing, Narduzzi was not afraid of Michigan at Michigan State, and he is not afraid of that either!

There is only one Coach worried about Maryland and he lost by one point last year and won by one point this year! Moreover, Michigan's defense had its way with Franklin's Offense?

Coach Pat did not hold a Press Conference In fear or to explain anything! Pitt doesn't play Maryland every year but Penn State does and sometimes WVU does, so whom does Maryland hurt more again?

As I see it, only Maryland's President Loh may be Franklin's only hope that Durkin does not get the job, because he has lousy vision when he left the ACC for Big Ten and was dead wrong as Law graduate on Liquidated Damage Clauses Arguments on ACC Exit Fees!

My view and respect your own, but Pitt's Coach Pat stays pat!

Why would an established DC want to go there? The peds clean up in recruiting in that area and no matter how much money Under Armour throws at that program, they are bad.

I was in a high school play with Durkin's sister back in 1991.

So I do have a connection to this guy.

O'Brien brought them up and he left CFB & Penn State, but wants to head back there? A Great coach can keep UMD Recruits in Maryland, grab a few from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and ACC/SEC Footprints and the Universities that will be challenged the most will be Penn State, WVU, and Rutgers if they win in the Big Ten East!

The very fact many Coaches with Great Reputations shows they are an attractive Program that many want to go and win there? They had a Coach a few years that made them a Top 24 Team and Program for a few years, so it can be done!

What I find strange is O'Brien brought it up he is interested, when many Penn State Fans keep insisting they never chased him away? Nittany Lies by Nttany Liars always come back to haunt them, look at the 14 years of cover ups?

Thought I read awhile back that their AD said he was going to hire a offensive coach.
