No - I highly doubt all those guys listed will return.

I am guessing 8 guys on the current roster that are eligible to play next year will not be back. 2 appear to be a given - Malik Henderson and Moss.

the scholarship board has 18, do we really have 23 juniors on scholarship?

Popp was introduced with the Seniors. He wasn't a scholarship player I believe. He did play on a few special teams units though. If any of the rs-Jr.s who didn't play much were leaving, they would've been introduced Friday as Popp was and as a few did last year. Maybe Whitehead and O'Neill will leave for the NFL. One or two may go the grad transfer route after Spring ball. All of the scholarship guys but Jalen Williams are on the two-deep. That was a decent class for Chryst.

whitehead should go to the draft. He's guaranteed to go in the top 3 rounds. Not to mention Paris would take his position so not a big loss for us.

I would not put money on that. He does not have ideal size for the position, there is a lot of bad tape regarding his on field play, and he was suspended for 3 games. If his combine numbers do not impress, then he will likely go after Round 3.

I will guarantee you whitehead won't go in the first three rounds unless he runs a 4.4 or better 40 and even then its unlikely. As others have said he isn't big for a NFL safety, also he wasn't that good the last 2 years in pass coverage. But as much as anything the fact he has failed a bunch of drug test is going to cause him to fall. He will have to pass the test in the NFL or he won't be able to play and if I was a GM that would be a major red flag.

I don't see Whitehead being an NFL player at the moment. How is a college safety with 1 int for the entire year considered to be one of the best at his position?

Jordan is wonderful against the run. Everything you want in a Safety.

His biggest downfall at Pitt was the fact that he was put in a position to make the calls for the DBs, and he didn't make the correct calls, or just didn't make any call way too often in his first two years. It cost Pitt several games.

His pass coverage skills are not on the same level as his run stopping abilities.

I have no idea if his pass D is lacking because of the scheme he is asked to play at Pitt, or if he would have the same difficulty in another D.

He very well may be one of those guys we've seen all too often at Pitt who get to the NFL and all of a sudden show things we never saw at Pitt.

Add Quadree, Whitehead and Jalen Williams. The others are either walk-ons or returning contributers.

Jamal Adams - 6’0” 214lbs
Malik Hooker - 6’1” 206lbs
Jabril Peppers - 5’11” 213lbs
Budda Baker - 5’10” 195lbs
Justin Evans - 6’0” 199lbs
Delano Hill - 6’1” 216lbs
John Johnson - 6’0” 208lbs
Josh Jones - 6’1” 220lbs
Marcus Maye - 6’0” 210lbs
Marcus Williams - 6’1” 202lbs
Obi Melifonwu - 6’4” 224lbs

Please explain to me how 5’11 194 BEFORE training for the combine is not nfl safety size? 11 safeties went in the top 3 rounds....any of you want to list 11 better NFL safeties coming out this year that will push him to round 4? He’s not Derwin James or Minkah Fitzpatrick...but who the hell is? After that, there’s not much difference and I think Jordan will blow up the combine with his numbers.

I would look for:
Jalen Williams
Dintino
Pilato
MacVittie

Guys who have been here 3/4 years and not sniffing the field.

Flowers or a young guy who is homesick or unhappy with a position switch or something. Not sure how happy I would be with the staff if i was Pugh or H Miller.....unless they were on with the moves.

To go along with Moss and M. Henderson who people are saying are already gone.

Q Henderson wouldn't get drafted until the final round most likely. He'll be back. I always found it odd that more NFL teams didn't draft return specialists higher but in the 80's it was fairly common and they always seemed to get hurt in camp/pre-season.

M. Henderson and MacVittie were both guys that got big praise from coaches as true-frosh. I hope they find a role for TM. Other teams are using former QB's like him to devastating effect.

Whitehead was at #7 as a safety before the season in the one ranking that someone posted earlier. He has been surpassed by some guys since then but I think most are underclassmen just like him. The questions are...Can he improve his stock at the combine? How many other safeties are coming out? Right now he's right at that 3-4RND spot where its a tough decision. Has he developed as far as he is going to in the college game? Can he put together a better tape of himself playing the ball as a Sr? Does he value finishing his career as a contributor on a possible very good team? Can he mature a bit and stay out of trouble?

Lots of questions and the only one with the answers is him. I would love to see him back for selfish reasons. I think we'll get more QB pressure and have a better O next year. Both will factor into a more aggressive D which will help him be in a position for more splash plays against the pass.

The 4th quarter of the Miami game probably killed his NFL dreams for this year.

Whitehead was average in pass coverage, maybe below average, but his speed and athleticism probably get him drafted in the 2nd-4th round. Its pretty much all about the combine and I think he'll combine well.

Good post.

Also, every NFL team runs quarters/cover 4. Not every down obviously, but it might be the most popular defense in the NFL in terms of total percentage of plays among different coverages. So if he struggled with it at Pitt at times, he might at the NFL level as well.

I still want him back because overall he's a good college player, but I also understand if he leaves to get paid earlier.

I don't disagree but his film will kill him. I honestly doubt he gets picked on day three right now.

Day 3?

Whitehead will get drafted. 4th Round at worst. He's too fast to go later.

However, this tells you what I thought of his play at Pitt? I don't think he is a big loss. He made very, very few impactful plays. Sure, the UVa pick 6 and the Duke INT were huge but I cant even remember any other big plays he made in 3 years.

Q henderson isn't leaving early unless he just doesn't want to play college ball anymore he might be a 7th round pick but its doubtful. He needs to return and show up in the passing game. If he can do that he might intrigue a team as a slot guy/returner. Most teams don't want to use a spot just for a return man.
Whitehead is probably a 3rd or 4th rounder on face value, assuming he runs pretty well( I am guessing low 4.5) if he is faster than that he could move up or slower move down. Problem is the failed drug test are absolutely going to cause him to fall. He will have to pass them in the NFL as well and NFL teams don't want to spend a round 1-3 pick on someone who might not be available to play because of suspensions. I fully expect him to leave and wish him well, but he could probably improve his draft stock a lot if he returned, passed all drug test for a year and got some improved tape in coverage.

He will get picked. I disagree with the poster that says he is good in run defense and thats what you want out of a safety. Its not 1954 anymore teams want safety's who can cover. Want to see the type of safety most teams are currently looking for look at Davis from the steelers. Former CB with really good size. Thats what is required to deal with the now pass happy NFL

There's only one guy in your list similar in size and he ran an electronic timed 4.45 at the combine. Whitehead will measure in around 5'10" and 190. We know college heights are inflated and he's not gaining weight before the combine. As I said in another thread, he better be in the 4.4s or he won't break the 4th round.

I don't understand how people think Q Henderson would leave, unless they know he doesn't want to be at Pitt or can't be at Pitt. The guy is a terrible WR. He has essentially 0 chance to stick in the NFL.

There have been several S drafted in the first 2 rounds that arnt great against the pass,it's called playing the box or becoming a weak side hiybrid, cardinals are famous for overdraft in game a S and making them a hybrid

Expecting Whitehead to enter the draft but have a funny feeling that O'Neill will stick around. Otherwise, expect the usual off season attrition.

Really hoping Ollison and DiNucci stick around. Ollison gained a lot experience in many roles. And, DiNucci because depth is needed at QB and he's just play away from being the man at QB next season.

Were those hybrids 5'11 190 lbs? It used to be the safety's were listed as SS and FS. FS were cover guys normally smaller in the 5'10 180 to 210 lbs. SS were typically 210lbs and up.

He's not a big loss but a fourth rounder at worst?

Im blocking anyone who doesn't have Whitehead as a top 3 round pick. Zero football knowledge. Thanks for identifying yourselves.
