National guys keep saying probably pitt goes to the sun bowl against Stanford . but outside the sun and the crappy Detroit one, the rest of the bowls fall in the acc footprint. I checked airfare and it is like 700 bucks a ticket from bwi. no way in hell can I do that trip.

Anyway if it is the sun against Stanford that is a great match up they can sell....Conner vs McCaffrey

Its a first class event with a strong tradition. If you get rid of it, which bowl do you backfill with? The ACC has a tie-in with every decent bowl in our footprint or near it. I wouldn't replace it with the Boca Raton or Miami Beach Bowls (though those would be great Tier 2 Bowls).

My problem with the Sun is that very very few Pitt fans are going to go and it will just add to the narrative that Pitt fans dont go to bowl games. In a season where we beat Clemson and PSU, it would be ashame if Pitt fans cant celebrate it at a bowl game.....and for those of you that say you're not a fan or too cheap because you wont spend $3K-$4K for a December Sun Bowl trip, spare me. I question anyone who actually would spend that amount for that game, not that it isnt a nice bowl, but not in a place where I'd spend that kind of money.

Hopefully, we can sway Florida Citrus Sports to put us in one of their 2 games. I honestly l, honestly believe that Pitt fans would bring 10K or more to an Orlando game. Is that more than VT or Louisville??? Probably not VT but they were just in Orlando. Definitely more than demoralized Louisville but they have the Heisman winner.

Pitt has a lot to sell here:

- fanbase excited after a season with 2 great wins

- great offense and terrible defende will ensure a high scoring game

- James Conner

- the Pitt/WVU storyline

The Sun Bowl is a great bowl for the ACC. The locals sell the tickets, so they do not rely on the schools bringing a bunch of fans. The ACC has a quite a few small fanbases (Pitt, Miami, Wake, Duke, BC., etc.). It has some prestige and tradition. No need to get rid of it, IMO.

Well if we do, I'd be for it if we can actually get another good bowl for the ACC instead. Unless another conference cuts ties with a bowl of that caliber though, could end up replacing it with some minor bowl that does nothing at all to help the ACC.

Typical spoiled Pitt fan grumblings. Its a good bowl I plan to attend. This is why we have such a shyte reputation. The Sun Bowl is fine our fanbase sucks. PS don't go to the bowl . Others will .Hail to Pitt and eff our fans.

The ACC has hookups with far worse bowls than the Sun. Two very attractive things about the Sun: long tradition; and second, it gets a lot of pub on CBS so that it's better playing in that game than on one of the ESPN affiliates where it's just one of 25 bowl games. Those positives outweigh the game being played outside the ACC footprint.

Yes you are wrong. why would you want to get rid of a venue in a very warm climate, only miles from the murder capital of North America?

The Sun bowl carries with it a lot of history and some prestige. Yes, it may be very far away and somewhat hard to get to but its a good bowl for sure.

Cut ties with a bowl with history dating back 81 years with a sense of pride by the locals related to it so that the ACC can establish a new relationship with the Chuckie Cheese Classic in sunny Burbank California or some such thing? nah... save most of the 700 bucks and hop on rt 66 to Albuquerque and straight down I25 and see America....

you are really worried about cutting ties with people from el paso? I think the 246 people who got free tickets from their place of work will be ok with this..

I feel ya, I live much closer and airfare for me is 900 bucks! I may try nearby cities and not El Paso, that airport isnt cheap.

Im not sure when that photo was taken,... as it looks like the typical ped state photo, no teams on the sideline, obviously not during the game, so who cares... but the Pitt-Oregon St game was PACKED.

Amd the locals attended in full force, I never had so many free shots of good tequila before, as flasks were definitely allowed in.

no need to bring Heinz into this conversation. It has been beaten to death....

This photo proves so, so much about the attendance at the Sun Bowl. No, really, it does. This was obviously taken in the middle of the fourth quarter in a close game.....

possibly. I just don't see this sun bowl history being the fabric of acc football lore like the rest of you, thats all. I think if this bowl is replaced with another one, the fine people of el paso and acc football will continue on with their lives..

"The sun seemed to shine only on No. 20 Pittsburgh as they displayed an impressive rushing performance to overpower No. 19 Kansas 33-19 in the first sellout in Sun Bowl history. The matchup featured two of the most notable collegiate players: Tony Dorsett of Pittsburgh, who would win the Heisman Trophy a year later, and Kansas’ Nolan Cromwell.

Pitt’s quarterback, Robert Haygood, was named the C.M. Hendricks Most Valuable Player and teammate Al Romano was the Jimmy Rogers, Jr. Most Valuable Lineman recipient."

.... apparently, there was a time when Pitt fans could travel to exotic far off places and not whine so much......

thats the problem with the sun bowl for me, there are no nearby cities. its pretty much fly to el paso, watch game, fly home unless you want to drive for 5 hours after the flight.

Hey, dont get me wrong... I agree with you. Just disagreed with the depiction in that erroneous photo. I am serious, the Pitt game was packed, and locals go to that bowl game in numbers. They know it is a big tourism boost, and want to keep it.

41k listed at last years game, 47k in '14. I can imagine the snow kept the people huddled under cover prior to game so yeah, that pic probably is misleading.

We should all hold a special place in our hearts for the Sun Bowl. The game in 1989 versus Texas A&M was our last meaningful contest as a football program until the WVU win in 1997.

Great move by Pitt raising the academic standards. It worked wonders.

Its a 27 hour drive from Pittsburgh but one I'd consider if I could get away from the family for three days.

The locals need to sell tickets due to where the game is located. El Paso is off the beaten passo!

how you going to do that in 3 days?

It would require getting a friend to tag along and alternate drivers but certainly do-able. leave at midnight on the 29th, drive 22 hours or so, sleep ~ 10-6 and get there by noon on the 30th. Drive straight through on the way back, home by 10 PM on the 31st.

I think I'm strange in that I enjoy the marathon driving sessions. My favorite part of our semi-yearly trips to the gulf is getting up at midnight and driving straight through until 5 PM or so.

Wait, they moved the Sun Bowl to Chicago?
Chicago murder is amateur hour. anyone can shoot someone, Juarez mexico, they cut your head off and set your body on fire.. Sun bowl doesn't sound bad, maybe go get a little weird pre-game across the border, start getting some cerveza muscles with the local natives, tell em now that we have a real president in office, there are gonna be some changes around here.. Maybe wear an American flag while pounding tequila shots at the local tavern.. Who is coming with me?

I went in 2009. The hillside acroos the border smelled like it was on fire. However, they had a nice horse track and we were pounding Dos Lunas. Slapped on some free Brut 33 and met some locals. I'm not sure if they were illegals but I am sure what we did was highly illegal. I woke up penniless and flew home. When are we leaving, looking forward to a rematch?
