“However, on page 18 of a recent AMA memo, issued on October 30, (resolution 509, page 3) the organization officially reversed its stance on HCQ, stating that its potential for good currently may supersede the threat of any potentially harmful side effects.”

The ama isn’t science
It’s a political organization
...that publishes several peer review journals. But agreed, it's a liberal, political organization with a membership of less that 20% of the physicians in the US, and it supported Obamacare.

The AMA has backtracked on its statement that it does not support prescribing of hydroxychloroquine for Covid due to lack of evidence of benefit. The AMA is not saying that the evidence supports its use for Covid. The AMA is going back to the standard that an approved pharmaceutical can be prescribed for an off-label indication by any licensed practitioner (regardless of proof of benefit or lack thereof).

The AMA has very little influence on the actual practice of medicine by clinicians. They attempt to influence practice at the levels of government. Individual clinicians are much more influenced by their specialty organisations.
