Pitt was down 17-10 going into the 184 match at Oklahoma. Nino won his match to make it 17-13. Stout was losing 3-1 in the third. Got a late escape and takedown to win 4-3. Oklahoma challenged the takedown, but the call stood.

That made it 17-16 Oklahoma going into the Hwt match. I believe this is the second time in 6 matches the pressure has been on Meech. He came through with a convincing 13-2 major decision and Pitt won 20-17 to remain undefeated.

Terrific comeback. We won 5 of the final six matches to come from way behind. Mickey won at 133, Talib won at 157 and Jake Wentzel won at 165. Oklahoma only won 4 matches but picked up a tech fall over Fenton at 125 and a pin over Harvey in :55.

I am not certain the final score is correct. I thought Mickey and Jake both got major decisions, so unless there was a team penalty point lost, we should have had 21 points with Meech’s major. But it was announced as 20-17.

Oklahoma is much like Pitt: a program with a great tradition which has fallen on hard times. But, beating them in Norman demonstrates we are further down the road back than they are. I think they have only one or two ranked wrestlers.

It also showed the holes in this team, which we all are familiar with, Fenton, in particular. We still are a year or two away.

What happened to Harvey? Anyone know how he got pinned so fast?

Track Wrestling shows Phillip 10--4 over OK kid. Wentzel 13-2 over OK.

With the Fall time at 55 seconds, I suspect a throw. That kid was on both the freestyle and Greco junior pan-Am teams and placed first in freestyle and third in Greco.

I guess he got caught in a scramble situation.

If you need evidence at how fast Gavin has this program going in the right direction, just look at OU. Their coach has had longer to try to revive a program which has a past pretty equal to ours, and yet he has only one ranked wrestler, at 141. I suspect their 174 pounder soon also will be ranked, as the match against us was only their fourth of the year.
