Steelers have three chances to close the door and they just leave that one glimmer of hope that the Ravens seize. They always make games closer than they should be. Pitt does it all the time too. Unreal.

Hard to tell what was worse....Tomlin's late game decision making, Haley's 4th down play calling, or Scobee's kicking. Literally gave the game away.

It's scobee
Honestly, that was just bad football. It was like a death match of poor football, except the Steeler's D stepped up big time for the majority of the game.

(Edit: What's up with the Raven's and Flacco? Some terrible play calls and execution. Yikes. At least the Steeler's could point to having Big Ben out of the game.)

When will people realize Tomlin just isn't a very good coach? If people wanna rip on Narduzzi after game three in his first year, Tomlin should be getting absolutely grilled right now. It's bad enough Scobee is still on the team, but the fact that he's awful doesn't have to make your coaching idiotic.
Also, if you wanna really define "most valuable player" in the NFL... hands down Ben Roethlisberger. You might think that sounds crazy, but no other team looks that drastically different on the field if their starting QB is out. The Steelers are good because of Ben, once he retires maybe it will be noticed more.

All 3 get a big "F"---also, can anybody tackle?

1. Kickers are not football players. It's too important of a position to be trying to chase guys down on kickoffs in the preseason. Would be like trying to let your ace pitcher throw a no hitter in spring training. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
2. The Steelers had a terrible offseason that left them trolling for Vick at the end of the summer. No plan at backup. Vick didn't do horribly but he left guys wide open last night or was late on throws.
3. Bell and Brown are stud football players that should have the ball in their hands in crunch time. Ben is the only other player close to them. After that, the drop-off is unbelievable.
4. Tomlin seems to spend more time thinking of ways to talk about why they fail than preventing it.
5. Kickers are not football players. Ravens win because they have a really good kicker. Steelers lost because apparently, they don't.

NEVER close the door? Kind of an overstatement, no?

The two main problems you mention were a result of injuries. Gradkowski's hand and Suisham.s injured brain, I mean knee. There is nothing wrong with having Vick as your backup QB. I doubt anyone in the league has a better backup. Point 3 is the most pertinent. Give the damn ball to Bell and let your stud line win it for you. Play to your strengths.

Yes, for much of that game Harbaugh was making Tomlin look like a genius.

Considering we have seen 11 Pro Championships and 1 NCAA football Championship the last 40 years and a city like Cleveland has seen exactly ZERO in 50 years......I don't think they are boo hooing for us. Hell, Philadelphia only has like 5 Pro titles in 40 years with one more Pro team.

That seems to be their biggest problem. Also, for a guy who always preaches that the standard never changes when a starter goes down and a backup comes in, it sure didn't look that way last night. You can take the Cowher approach and play not to lose when you have a lead, but when your whole offensive gameplan is playing not to lose... you will lose. Vick missed a few easy throws late, but their offense all night was helped by some terrible play calling and gameplanning.

My point exactly.

Really? In the last decade "Pittsburgh Teams" have won 2 Super Bowls, a Stanley Cup, a few Big East Basketball Tournaments and regular season titles, c'mon man! It's not like we're Cleveland!

Actually Vick IS the result of poor decisions!

Tomlin was mocked for "wasting" a 4th round pick for a QB of the future. If that pick had worked out, we would've had a good QB who would have been in the system for years. But Tomlin MISSED...BIG TIME.. on that pick.

Missed picks in the draft turn themselves up in different ways. Vick at QB IS the result of a BAD DRAFT CHOICE by Tomlin!

As to the kickers, sometimes you have to shake your head and say WTF. When a team is on its THIRD kicker, you can't hold out hope for anything more than serviceable (of which we didn't even get that!)

As for a few bad choices, everyone makes them. that throw in the last Superbowl still grates me, as Beast Mode would've won it for the Seahawks denying B-tch Brady and Patriots another Sb ring!

I don't understand why people complain about how Tomlin talks. I really don't. Is it like a covert attempt at being racist? I mean, complain about draft decisions, calls during the game, whatever. But the press conference stuff perplexes me.

Personally, I find it amusing, It is unique. But I don't think it is racist to be amused by Tomlin's own clichés. I can see fans getting aggravated by those clichés but I am betting a large faction of those same people annoyed by Tomlin's comments are also annoyed by Clint Hurdle's clichés. He does the same thing in his own way, and yes if you listen to sports talk in this town, it bothers some people. I believe Hurdle is white. One way that is going to help end racism in this country is to stop looking for the boogeyman behind every corner.

Hmmmm.......how soon we forget. Is this anything different than all the people who endlessly complained about the way Chryst talks and his press conferences? Was that racist? I don't think it is anything covert. JMO.

Have you ever seen the Patriots without Tom Brady or the Packers without Aaron Rogers? And actually in a lot of recent years (although not so much anymore) the Saints without Drew Bress and the Chargers without Philip Rivers would be in the same boat.

That's fair, though in some cases I'm gotten an "uppity black person" vibe from some of the folks I know who dislike Tomlin.

Not saying you're wrong, it's just that so many here made fun of Chryst and his speech and presser's and pretty sure it wasn't racially motivated.

Amen PG. I was opening back up this thread to post exactly that. Exactly that. No doubt these "progressives" will try and explain how this is different. But again, one way to resolve racial tensions is for white, liberals (and I am sorry it is what it is and you are what you are) looking for a boogeyman around every corner.

A position such as football coach or President will always have critics and detractors. Whether the guy is black, white, yellow, red, green, blue, etc....there will be comments and criticism. If the race of the person in those positions generate that criticism, then yeah that is wrong. But, if you are also not allowed to criticize because the person is protected by his race, well that is wrong also.

That was actually my point. Brady went down years ago and Cassel took over. They went 11-5. Somehow didn't make the playoffs, but most years that's good enough. It's more in the sense that when Brady, Rodgers, Brees go down, those teams still run the same offense basically with their backup QB. The offense the Steelers ran Thursday looked like what middle school teams run.
Obviously those guys going down would be a huge loss for their teams, but they just plug the backup in and run the offense still. I'll give them a pass this week because Vick had very little time to prepare, but I don't see it being any different until Ben returns. They're not gonna risk Vick making a mistake, they will keep using about a third of the playbook.

The won five less games with Cassel than they did the year before with Brady. Brady had 4806 passing yards in 578 attempts in 2007. In 2008 Cassel had 3693 passing yards on 516 attempts. You really don't think they were doing things differently?

Brady has made a living off of short passes the whole way down the field. In no way am I trying to argue with you, but yes Cassel basically did the same thing, just threw short passes. The only difference was New England happened to have Moss the year before and Brady threw more long balls. Ever since then, it's been short passes the entire way down the field.
Big Ben is an elite QB no question. Also, in no way am I saying he is better than Brady. Just comparing the overall teams, when Brady is gone if Belichick is still there New England will still win. The Steelers have no chance without Roethlisberger. That is my only point, I'm not disagreeing with you.
