In the Dolphins vs Chargers game. No consistency whatsoever. Some QB’s you can’t touch and then others get roughed up and no call.

It's a bad call because the defender tried to brace his hands on the ground to avoid the foul, but I do think defenders having their weights fall on the QB is consistently called. IIRC, didn't the Ravens get called for that today as well?

Yes they did.

Yeah and that one was questionable as the guy was falling mostly to the side and not on Trubisky. I guess I don’t understand what they are supposed to do to defy gravity.

It was a soft call and while I'm not a fan of the rule, when you do see a quarterback hurt when a 300-pound defender drops his entire weight on him after a sack, I understand why the rule is in place and strictly enforced.

Agree. It's football. Guys get hit. It wasn't like Trubisky delivered the pass and was standing there. The contact was right after he threw the pass. Nothing cheap or late with the hit. If that was called on a Steeler defender we would be saying WTF??

Same as cheap DPI sometimes . Keep the flag in the pocket. Let the guys that play the game do their job.

There’s definitely subjectively in whom it is happening to. The league dictated Brady was untouchable long ago. As certain guys emerge, they become too golden to tolerate hitting. Flacco was like that for awhile; I’m sure it’s fine to pop him now though. Over the years, Rodgers, Brees, etc. Pickett’s body slam yesterday was “good solid football” but went uncalled only because Pickett is only a rookie and hasn’t done anything spectacular yet to warrant league protection. It certainly would have been called if done to Brady, Rodgers, Mahomes etc.

Pickett play should have been flagged period he grabbed the facemask to slam him down

Agreed. And if Mahomes, it would have been automatic. In fact maybe both a face mask penalty AND a RTP. Dude probably would have faced at least a 5 figure fine as well. You simply can’t do that to the designated Gods of the league.

I didn’t see the face mask, that definitely would have changed my opinion of it.

I didn’t think it was a definite penalty at the time given he had become a runner and the defender’s motion of slamming him down appeared to be due to their momentum heading in different directions. It didn’t seem over the top or unnecessarily violent to me.

Here you go … inexcusable the refs missed this.

It wasn’t. It was fine (any face mask notwithstanding). But it would 100% be called if it had happened to Mahomes or Brady (or any other current and active insurance commercial guy). And if it wasn’t called, it would be incredibly controversial that it wasn’t. It would be the talk of all the shows: “how was this egregious body slam of Patrick Mahomes not called???”.

I’m not even saying that’s bad in the business sense; in fact it’s the opposite. But it is ‘wrong’ to have such blatant double standards. It (further) reduces the league to a WWE type of farce regarding officiating.

The alternative is a quicker whistle, which nobody liked.

Pickett shouldn't try to extend the play if the Guard is just going to ignore the guy who is running right at him. If you get pressure that fast, turtle up, you're probably not going to save the play.

Yeah that’s something hopefully he learns quickly, especially behind this OL. Two concussions already is a concern. A few more early in his career and he might not have a very long one.

Agreed.

Also, is there something they can do to improve protection on the back of the head? So that the head doesn’t snap back so violently as you see in many of these concussions? I suppose it would be difficult to do something without affecting mobility.

Mahomes-type helmut which is clearly larger than normal. I don’t think it’s jammed with techno-wizzardry.

It's not so much the head hitting the ground as it is the violent sudden stopping of the head movement. Maybe extra cushioning would help a little, but not much.

Problem with that are the Press Box Warriors like Rapin’ Ron Cook will label Kenny as a coward, blame him for causing his own sacks, and his “inability to extend the play.” Because besides gorging themselves and guzzling the Steelers free spread and booze, all the “reporters” bother to see is what the Quarterback does and where the ball goes.

It sucks, but that's how I'd run the league too. For as much as people rightfully complain about the weak flags, no one wants to watch Chad Henne vs Teddy Bridgewater face off because two starting QBs got injured.
