Surprised this hasn't been mentioned but according to Matt Steinbrink.'s tweet Richmond big Nelson Alonzo-Ododa is visiting Pitt this weekend.

If Pitt can land another big this would allow the red shirting of Nix which could benifit both the player and the program. That is unless Nix comes in a lot better than expected.

Yeah.... this would seem to indicate that Nix is not ready to compete at this level. If he is back up to 320 or so then that is not good. Should be 285-300 to be able to play at this level, given his big frame.

Where did you read or hear that Nix is back up to 320?

I doubt it indicates much of anything. We're in the middle of May with one opening for a guy who will be here 1 year. He has a skill - shot blocking - that we simply don't have currently. No telling if he'll be able to do it at the ACC level but anyone who could possibly contribute anything is welcome at this point even if it's just a decent practice player. Unless there's some late and unlikely surprise (such as Rowan) we're not getting any kind of impact player.

Best case he's ready to play ,next is Pitt doesn't need him this year and he continues to develop .

He don't look like 320 !

He looks better than 6'10 Brian Williams who was listed at 280 for UT.
All he ever did was get every offensive rebound there ever was.
He had some nice games... helped, but it was funny how his stats
usually ended up to 8-10 pts a game coming off the glass.
And he was pudgy compared to the looks of Rozelle Nix.

Btw, RIP Dyron Nix!

Conditioning is both getting strong and losing fat. It is also building cardio stamina in order to be able to run up and down court for long periods without getting worn out too easily.

But, that is only part of the equation with a big young man like Nix. The other is developing and refining his hoops skills (i.e., footwork and shooting--both around the backboard and at the FT line and learning how to position himself for rebounds both on offense and on defense).

If he is merely in condition when he arrives, he might still need a redshirt year to work further refining those skills Ontario Lett had begun to impart at the JUCO.

We should know more this summer--assuming Nix is here for the summer pro-am and we see what he can do on the court.

I would sure hope he is here for the pro-am... needs to develop some chemistry with his new teammates.

I would think 285 or so would be the right playing weight for him... don't think he could get lower than that with the big frame. But, over 300 is still probably too big.

Rozelle Nix isn't coming to Pitt to redshirt. I'm not sure where that started, but it seems like a "only on the Lair" type thing.

If he's not good enough to play next year, then it's best to get rid of his scholarship as soon as possible, not tie it up for an extra year hoping a 22 year old finally starts playing high level basketball.

I agree that the plan isn't to redshirt but if he's not good enough to play meaningful minutes, you might as well not play him. Its better to save the year of eligibility than put him in in the final minute of a game in Dec. Worst-case scenario, if he never develops, he grad transfers after his RS Jr. season.

This thing on Nix getting RSed... the thing is.... there is NO TIME AVAILABLE INSIDE what with the transfers in of Maia and ANO. Also, he has done a lot of work in getting his weight down but there is just as much work needed adapting to D1 BB. So, RS him for a year and he will get that experience in practice and with coaching and then come fall of 2016 he will be much more ready and Maia and ANO... will be gone.

But, YES, this is a guess as to how Dixon will handle this.

If Dixon decides to play Artis most or all of his time at SF... then there MIGHT be minutes for Nix but... Artis at SF did not work last year and probably won't work period.

Luther... is pretty much in the same boat as Nix.

Nix redshirting is only a lair thing. Many saying he should redshirt or he just isn't good enough to play D1 ball. My question is how many of these people have been to Florida to watch him play ?

Hey, if he turns into the next coming of Shaq... what the heck. Sit Maia down. Sit Young down... go with Rozzie!

So, what we are saying is just a GUESS as to what we can expect to happen. Yeah, on the other hand, Nix could turn out to be the next coming of... Tryone Haughton.

Ya gotta play things by ear. If a player is ready for minutes ya gotta find some time for him one way or another.

But, if would be shame if Nix just got a few minutes here and there and lost a year of eligibility for it. Come next year Maia and ANO will be gone and thus a lot of minutes open up for both Rozzie and Luther.

Thus the guess... that he and Luther will get RSed.

But, ya never know!

We won't know how minutes will be allocated until midway in the season. I could see 2 of the 3 centers playing together at times. I do believe that the guys playing the best will get time...if that's Nix, great. If not, the redshirt gives him development time and balances the class distribution, too.

Three centers? The ONLY true C we have on the roster is Nix. Maia and ANO were both listed as FORWARDS on their rosters at their previous schools, and almost surely be listed as such on our roster once it is released.

But, yeah, I could see Nix out there with either Maia or ANO at PF... both of them are well prepared to play PF.

Moreover, I would not be surprised to see ANO at PF in the Gonzaga game... covering Wiltjer or Sabonis. I cannot see Artis covering either of these two (3 inch height disadvantage) so the job has gotta be handled by Young and ANO. Maia, will have his hands full at C covering Karnowski.

We have 4 guys who have played center and done good enough there. How's that? I would say that very many college centers are listed as an F or F-C on their team roster. But for many, their minutes came at the 5. There just are not 700 true centers out there to supply all of the NCAA. If many teams are throwing PF-C's out there, then we have 4 centers.

For those of you who keeping saying redshirt Nix and worry about his size. Go back to the NIT game and watch what we did with their (big) center. I BELIEVE THE ANSWER IS NOTHING. 7 ' 300 pounds. Really ? How much do we really need him to do ?
