Any chance at improvement rests with the portal, so..

Who is better to recruit the portal, Capel coming off four horrendous seasons or a new coach coming off success?

The answer to THAT question should inform Lyke’s decision making.

Here is the better question:

Would you rather have (assuming they return if Capel is here): Hugley, Femi, Burton, Horton, and Sibande + portal players

Or

None of those players + portal players

Capel is back next year unless there's a mass exodus so its a moot point

So you automatically assume all those players are back with Capel and you assume NONE of those players are back without him?

Lol. The two extremes…. While the truth is somewhere in the middle.

For the sake of this argument, you have to because if those players dont return if Capel is here, he is gone so there is no need for a debate. I've said this 100 times.

So your two takes are: no way Pitt can fire Capel if he returns everyone, but they will 100 percent fire him if he doesn’t.

So you take the two most obvious outcomes, make them opinions and declare yourself right either way. You’re a funny dude man. I think you actually believe you know college hoops too

A decision on Capel must be made ASAP. Just because a kid doesn't enter the portal the day after the season ends doesn't mean he won't enter it in April. For all you know they decide they will bring Capel back and on April 1, 3 kids decide to leave.

I for 1 don't think Hugley will come back, he is a decent player who could go to Europe and made some good money for himself.

I will give 1 more opinion, I don't like the way this portal garbage is set up. I think in all sports there should be a certain period of time where if a player wants to leave give them a month to figure it out, it shouldn't be a 12 month free for all.

I’d bet any amount of money he goes thru the process of the NBA Draft.

Possibly. Or he’ll have people in his ear to go to a Kentucky or somewhere to better improve his draft stock like Kofi had when he entered the portal. There’s no guarantees of anything from year to year anymore.

I would be stunned if vultures aren’t already circling, trying to get him to move. I’m not familiar with his HS/AAU guys so I’m not sure who they may have a connection with, but I’d be shocked if an approach or two hasn’t already been made to gauge his happiness here.

As far as his HS/AAU, wasn't his HS coach Chet Mason?

Then you fire him on April 3. No biggie

Yes. If they return, there is 0% chance he is fired. If he loses enough key players, I wouldn't say its 100% he's fired since 6-14 at least wasnt a disaster but I'd say 75% he's gone. "Direction of the program" is the big deal at that point.

6-14 + 4 starters back and you can at least dream of a Miami or Wake

6-14 and losing 4 starters and you're looking at a possible 0-20 so it would be time.

I am sure he has been getting recruited all year.

Even if things go as well as reasonably possible, the ceiling next year is about a .500 ACC record with a bunch of guys who will be gone before the following season. Man, that's just depressing for year five (in my opinion).
You are absolutely correct. We are stuck in basketball purgatory even if the best case scenario plays out. We need 3-4 more ACC level players for next season and currently have 0.

Why would he leave and go to a Kentucky where he’d be fighting for PT ?

He has visibly improved from what we saw last yr , is he doing this in a vacuum ? His coaches have helped him and he’s smart enough to know this .

His coach had his back last yr , I’m sure he hasn’t forgotten .

For Hugley, Europe isnt an option as some suggested. He will make more in college next year.

Its:

a) Pitt
b) another college team
c) NBA 2-way deal (if he is told he will make it)

If he can get at least a 2-way, he's probably gone. If not, he will make more in college than any pro league including the G-league

Good point. Oscar shouldn’t leave WVU either. Oh wait he’s gonna compete for a national title and be a first team all American.

What makes you think that the ceiling won’t always be a .500 conference record for Pitt with an occasional outperform/ underperform season thrown in here and there ?

The ACC is down. There is no reason Pitt cannot achieve the same amount of success as WF, ND, VT, and Miami. Hire a good head coach and things will be turned around in no time. Your attitude towards our program is pathetic.

In conference play, Gueye has averaged 32 minutes a game. Jeffress and Eze have averaged 20 and 17. To get better, Sibande, Santos, and some unnamed transfer have to replace the 37 mpg between Jeffress and Eze. And somehow they have to find someone to replace gueye. And someone or someones who are marginally better than Peyton Oladapo and Amadasun. And Big John to stay. That seems to be asking a lot.

Not sure Big John is crying himself to sleep every night .

You don’t need to go to Ky to be an All American.

You think Hugley isn’t that good from everything you post so why would a school like Ky want him ?

How many Howlands and Dixons are out there to get as coaches to turn this program around? And in the landscape that is the cesspool of college basketball now, who is to say that a Howland or a Dixon could even turn this trainwreck of a program around to begin with? One thing we know for sure...Capel isn't the answer.

No , it’s realistic . I want them to win national championships , but for that to happen the administration needs to want this and they don’t !

Dixon. Hahaha. The guy is a Failure. He’s a bottom feeder coach at TCU.. The guy should just retire with the little dignity he has left..

1/6 years in the NCAA tourney. He’s about as good as Capel..

It's really just about finding the right pieces and getting hot at the right time in basketball. I don't think I have to name some of the teams that have made Final Fours in the last 20 years. I'm certain a good number of them don't have Kentucky-esque levels of administrative backing.

We should absolutely be in the conversation for making the tournament more often than not. That's step one.

Agreed and a .500 conference record should put you in the tournament just about every yr .

I think it puts you in the conversation more often than not. I don't think it has to be the ceiling, though. No reason our conference record couldn't look like this over a 5-year span: 10-10, 13-7, 14-6, 7-13, 11-9. And that would hardly be "crushing it" for whomever our coach was.

It was an example of where he could go. Nothing more. You take things so literal for some reason. Winning programs will want him and think the deficiencies he has here they can fix. That’s what the transfer portal is

Bball insider is right though.
Once hugley gets pulled away, he wont come back
NBA or not.
Theres just way too much money involved in these things and loyalty only cuts so deep.
