Any thoughts on pitts unis this year

Our colors are out of whack, but i think we are seeing a preview of what the colors will look like next year, and by that i mean look at the helmet color

I think that they told the artist to make a manikin of Dan Marino and instead he made a manikin of Omar Moreno. Classic miscommunication.

Were getting all new uniforms next year anyways so I wouldn't worry too much about this years set.

lol hysterical:
"Yes Nike, khaki sounds great. Thanks. We'll probably never wear them but shut up and take our money."

Next year when the new unis come out I hope they also make an all blue with an alternate blue helmet to go with it. The all whites look horrible with the gold helmet. Only teams with white helmets tend to pull off the all whites (the Texas all white look is widely regarded as one of the best around).

Word is were going to have all blue, gold, and white sets with matching helmets and also throwback colors.

When we do go to the new uniforms next year, I hope to go back to white numerals. I think white numbers on the navy blue jersey look way better than gold numbers on a navy blue jersey.

I know a lot of people are concerned that white numerals on the navy blue jersey would make us look too much like Penn State or Notre Dame but I don't think that's necessarily true. We could definitely pull that off.

Also no piping or side panels. Lots of teams have tried that and they never look good.

Steve still screwing us from beyond with the block on the jerseys.

With a few color tweaks and consistency with the script, Pitt could have the best unis in college football. Old gold and navy.

First, small difference, it was Jeff Long who brought in the Block. If it's any consolation, if Steve had been on the job throughout, we likely would have never seen Block ... on the flip side though, that means we probably would still have his (tragically ugly) TorchCut Pittsburgh.

Second, Pitt still has a ton of Block merchandise unsold, in their stores and stores all over the place. I was just in Dunhams today, there is a whole corner of the store with loads of Block merchandise. They'd flip if Pitt dropped that logo completely right now. Not to mention signage, tiles, probably loads of stationery, business cards, what have you, that still feature it. So they can't completely get rid of it. Similar to why Dinocat is around ... all of the above, but also (and particularly) because of the sides of every other seat in Heinz Field.

Steve did still love his dinocat. That's why it began reappearing in the last couple years on uniforms. Jeff long tried to get rid of it and make it look a little more realistic, but of course that turned out poorly.

The good news is that we're going to have several different uniform combinations, including a throwback.

I didnt expect much of a change, as its been well talked about next season us a big redo of the uni's. That said its pathetic that the collar is in block and the helmet is in script. I mean its one or the other. Talk about terrible "branding" couldnt have been more than a very minor tweak to get the collar changed...

No white pants ever!!!!!!!

I think the only way the gold jersey would look half way decent is with a blue helmet.

I really hope the uniforms next year still have a traditional look and normal number fonts.

Really, ALABAMA, USC, OSU, Texas, Michigan's uniforms are down right boring but they wear them every year. The uniforms look better when you win. I hope Pitt doesn't start looking like the 1979 Pirates with too many uniforms to mix and match.

I know that the all-whites have become really popular (which I never understood really) everywhere but I wished we would never do that. Reminds me too much of Penn State. I think the white shirt, blue pants (or gold pants) looks sharp.

I think we have block on the jerseys because Steve ordered them before he got the boot... so he is still screwing us from beyond!

And frankly, Pitt got themselves into this mess in the first place. Steve, Nordy, Long, and whoever else allowed/oversaw these multiple tweaks and rebranding efforts were stunningly stupid for having allowed it. Perhaps they were great at other aspects of their respective jobs... but when it comes the uniform stuff... they were astoundingly stupid.

And Pitt winning more games and not continuing to shoot themselves in the foot (see above) is what will sell lots of merchandise in the stores... script or block or dino.

I'll agree with your last statement for sure. But merchants familiar with our teams know full well of the likelihood of the football team blowing up. And basketball is down now and very well might be in a free fall.

I think this accounts for why it's taken so long for Script apparel to hit stores, even (especially) Pitt's own. They have a glut of the Block and even old Dino stuff to unload. It's forced Pitt to keep those old logos in play (such as this year's unis) so they aren't total lame duck inventory. It has to continue to look somewhat 'official' for a while longer.

As you said, having successful teams would make Pitt gear a hot item regardless of which logo or colors (witness the untold hideous, obviously unofficial Steeler and Penguin gear of abysmal quality that still fly off shelves and paraded around by proud yinzers). If we went the mystical 10-2, much of the old gear would be eagerly snapped up.

But the Pitt teams' anemic performances have not driven a spike in sales needed to help clear out the old crap, even the high quality 'official' variety. Hence, stores have some inventory dating back a decade.

So as the season approaches, nearly a year after Script was reintroduced, Pitt merchandise honchos still face a quandary. People want or at least expect Script in stores. But mostly see Block.

I think it's a safe bet we'll see a little Script, maybe a token shirt or two, but loads of several-years-old Block and even Dino and Torch junk in the Heinz Field kiosks opening day. This is how it is at the Pete and places like Dicks now (and definitely how it is in lower tier places I've been like Dunham and JCPenney, where old Block and Dino is still exclusive).

People might buy something Script on impulse regardless if we win, but will turn up their noses at that same-old outdated gear if we aren't winning. Yet our shops apparently cant or won't dump it and write it off.

geeman is correct, one of the reasons we're not trying to switch immediately is that we've screwed over our vendors so many times with abrupt logo switches that we don't want to do it again.

I agree we don't want to screw them over, but let's put blame squarely where it belongs, the prior two ADs and the Chancellor who continued to allow that cluster**** to continue for so long. I'm glad the ship is being righted, but it is more like an Ocean Liner and takes time.

I don't disagree with that either. Even the most fervent administration defenders on this board even agree on this. They have said Pitt should have one single logo for everything, sports and the rest of the school. Sounds good, but means years of trying to sell off surplus old logo gear and amortizing old school materials and signage, as mentioned.

I still think Pitt should/could have done the switch for football and some other sports faster while sticking with Block for basketball for time being (which I think looks better on the hoops unis anyway, though of course that's just an opinion). The UCLA model.

That would still keep the old logo 'official' for time being, while freeing up football to totally embrace the Script this year (including new ... or maybe I should say "old" ... unis). I guess it really doesn't matter, but I think it would have been worth accelerating the move to it to complement the new start of the new HC and staff. Oh well.
