I am an avid Pitt sports fans, so someone please explain to me why we are whining about this years team.

Have they arrived yet ? No. Are they on their way ? yes. Pitt has lost 3 games this year by a TOTAL of 11 points. 11 Points !!!! All to top 25 teams. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that progress.
We have a 2nd year coach that is very passionate about the program and looks like he will top his win total every year. isn't that progress ?

The stands are filling up , slowly but surely(except VT it was Thursday, cold and I believe the Pens were in town). Up until this recent lost we were getting votes in the Polls every week. Progress ?

Big time 4 and 5 star recruits are noticing Pitt. Are we getting all of them ? No. Heck we may not get any, but we are getting noticed. And just like fishing if they keep noticing your bait and biting sooner or later you will land one (then 2,3, etc). But it takes time and patience.

So all jokes aside, because I just don't understand. Someone please explain to me what I'm missing and what else does Pitt need to do before the fan base gives them respect and stop complaining.

Remember Rome nor Alabama was built in a day.

We have a hard core group of natural complainers on this board and we know who they are.

In keeping with what you said above, also consider the fact that Florida State is also 5-3 with Jimbo Fisher as HC and he does get a lot of 4-5 star players.

LOL at our Board Whinners.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

we are upset we lost. it would be upsetting and discouraging if we didn't complain to be honest. Some of you think lowly of this team and are completely cool with 5-3. I am not one of those. That mindset is actually disturbing to me.. "Hey guys, pitt is mediocre, lets win 6 games because that's who we are." Weird mindset..

Too discount any positive gains from this year is foolish, to be upset about giving away wins to UNC and losing the other two is normal IMO.

I think many fans have just been around the block many times and have been conditioned to expect more of the same.

Even Narduzzi billed the VaTech game as the biggest of the year. So losing a game that pretty much eliminates us from the Coastal race is disappointing enough.

Throw in the fact that it was a loss to a team with a first year HC that had never won at Heinz Field and its easy to understand why some people are upset or disappointed.

It is the law of averages. Beat PSU & GaTech, lost to UNC & VaTech. Not much difference between those 4 teams and we are about their level currently or maybe a little less. So to expect more than a 2-2 split would be nice but not really statistically probable.

I'm guessing people expect a coach who took over a team that went 6-6 for four consecutive years that had virtually NO defense to go undefeated and compete for a national title in year number 2. It's obviously not enough that he win 8 games his first two years, but he has to be in the top ten in all the poles including recruiting. Remember, the last two coaches who won 8 games was fired. Damn it, its not good enough for Alabama or Ohio State so it not good enough for Pitt! 6-6 is mediocre, 8-4 is above average, 10 or more wins is good, 11-12 wins is great. We are supposed to go from mediocre 6-6 to great immediately. If you want to blame someone for being what we are now then don't blame Narduzzi, blame the administration because they were the ones who couldn't hire a coach and keep him. No one is going to win changing coaches every 3-4 years.

Uhh. Perhaps, I dunno, win? As to recruiting, this year is dissapointing and ranked closer to the ACC bottom. Attendance? Barnes (because that's what he is paid to do) hyped-got good results, but if we hit 35k for remaining games means we bombed and I suspect you'll see significant non renewals next season. Finally, no Rome wasn't built in a day, nor has Pitt football. Even rebuilt in the past 30-40 years.

The Pitt Board whiners need to go to the Florida State Board to help Florida State and Head Coach Jimbo Fisher with their expertise. I am sure they will be very appreciative.

With Florida State having perpetual Top 10 recruiting classes comprised of Rival 4 and 5 Star players yet producing only a 5-3 record is mystifying.

Hey he won a National Championship several years ago.

I would say Pitt DID overachieve last year.

In Paul Chryst's time here he went 2-3 in the Big East and then 3-5 and 4-4 in the ACC. He lost to Youngstown State and Akron, teams that Narduzzi beat his first year here. Chryst was 2-1 vs Va Tech (1-1 while in ACC), 0-2 vs Ga Tech, and 0-2 vs UNC. Narduzzi is 1-1 vs Va Tech, 2-0 vs Ga Tech, and 0-2 vs UNC but he was 6-2 in the ACC last year and could have a winning record in the ACC this year, something Chryst could not do.

Hey, I'm sick of being mediocre. I'm sick of going home after Thursday night games wishing I never went. I'm sick of seeing PSU beat an Ohio State and WVU starting off 6-0 because I know Pitt hasn't done that since the 1980's, and I'm sick of being so close and not winning against ranked teams. But you have to be positive, or at least try to or you come off sounding like a whiny little bitch crying the sky is falling all the time. There ARE positives if you are willing to look at them. Being negative about next year's schedule based on this year's recruiting rankings is ridiculous especially when they don't sign until February. Some years PoSU is going to get the best of Pitt in recruiting like last year and some times Pitt will get the best of them like this year. Try to be positive until there is nothing to be positive about, and right now there are things that are positive. I'm worried about the remaining games because of our pass defense, but I'm not going to freak out before those games are played.

I would hate to go to war with some of you people, talk about a situation where you have to be positive or you may die. Some of you people would never make it off the boat!

These are my feelings. Am I disappointed? Absolutely. Do I want better. Yes.

But I'm also realistic, and I also know the amount of support and where Pitt ranks in the CFB heiarchy. We are never going to be Bama, or tOSU, or someone. I do think we can run off a nice season or two here and there if the right people are in place. And I understand with all of the changes the last few years since DW was fired, we are actually fortunate to be where we are right now. That could have really killed the program.

And I also realize we are not as bad as some of the pessimistic types here like to portray this program.

It is going to take a mixture of time, favorable schedule, and the right people. We've played 4 teams in the top 21 as of today. We beat 1 and played down to the last minute of the game with the other 3. Outside of the DBs, this team has been pretty fun to watch.

Is this a real post or did you forget the sarcasm font? FSU is 73-17 under Jimbo even with their 5-3 record this year. Years 4, 5, and 6 when they are "his recruits" they were 37-4.

Like the Bama inclusion...

OSU and FSU face monumental personnel losses every year to the NFL. True they reload but youth is sometimes tough to overcome. PSU caught em at the right time. FSU QB is green as can be. These teams will be there yearly. Perhaps Clemson next year without Watson...think Ok State QB may finally have used up his eligibility for next year...sometimes it's the timing...

The answer to your question is an easy one: as ridiculous as it sounds, we have some dipsh!ts on these boards who showed how "knowledgeable" they were about Pitt football by predicting that Pitt was headed for a 9-10 win season.

Now that it's become clear that Pitt isn't going to meet their totally unrealistic expectations, it's Pitt's fault.

Yes, it honestly is. But it's progress from losing to really bad teams to losing to decent teams. That's like being the prom queen at a welding school.

We have a 2nd year coach that is very passionate about the program and looks like he will top his win total every year. isn't that progress ?

I don't see him topping his win total honestly. Maybe matching it. And if he would top it, it would be topping his win total 1 time - not every year, we've seen one year improvements here before. That consistency is something we can only dream of around here, and one day I hope to say we have a coach, Duzz or otherwise, that has topped his win total every year. Yes, it's got to start somewhere, but it's "started" before, never to materialize.

The stands are filling up , slowly but surely(except VT it was Thursday, cold and I believe the Pens were in town). Up until this recent lost we were getting votes in the Polls every week. Progress ?

......it was Thursday, cold and I believe the Pens were in town). Is all that needs to be said about this portion. There will always be a reason for people not to go to Pitt games. "It was Villanova..and the rib fest."

We're getting noticed, yes, but the amount of recruiting ammo for other coaches to use against this program is infinite. 1% of college football players play on Sunday...for most, they want a big time atmosphere and playing for a championship for 4 years..strike 1 and 2 on Pitt, unfortunately.

So all jokes aside, because I just don't understand. Someone please explain to me what I'm missing and what else does Pitt need to do before the fan base gives them respect and stop complaining.

Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, shame on you. Fool me for decades, but yet I still donate and come to games....I have the right to gripe weekly until things get INFINITELY better right in front of my face, at least afford me that opportunity.

The forever optimists can't have it both ways here. Anyone receiving this bad of a year-over-year ROI on some other commodity would have left years ago. But we come back every year saying "Scott, take my money" because deep down underneath the pessimism we love Pitt and want it to be successful more than anything, and deep down hope someday it will but we're grouchy from some, um, tough years..to put it nicely, and understandably so.

If the people who complain every year when it turns out to essentially be same Pitt, different year but still donate/buy tickets (and let me be clear that's much different from those that watch every week at home, never give, and complain...or those that complain 365 days a year) actually went to root for another team, they could move the games to Highmark stadium and there'd still be 40 threads a season on attendance on this board. Face it, you need us and our dollars. So you're going to have to deal with some negativity, sorry.

I have always been an optimistic guy about the program, in person for many years and for 99% of my posts over the past 11 months on here - I've only recently turned sour because everyone reaches their tipping point at some point. I've just unfortunately hit mine with this program. I like Duzz, think he could be something good around here, but I'm just getting tired. Rest assured though I'll be renewing as always next year because while I know complaining about the problem doesn't help, taking away my dollars doesn't solve it.

Great post. Only those of us who have lived thru this mess and remained steadfast supporters can relate to the frustration we have experienced and the lack of patience that boils over in us from time to time.

I still think HCPN can be the guy that turns it around and sustains success. However, his absolute reluctance and even quotes about his refusal to do ANYTHING to adapt (scheme or personnel) to our deficiencies is very, very worrisome. That is not the mark of a good coach. And, yes, the recruiting is not a vast improvement from what a solid coach should be able to do, so I think that needs a clear uptick, as well.

That happens to most teams. The other team wants to win too you know.

Yes. Additionally, Pitt is about as talented or perhaps less talented than the teams they are playing. Perhaps that is why they are playing .500 ball against power 5 schools this year.

I know I don't go to games or donate! But I want my entertainment!!!!

You're right. How dare Pitt fans be impatient with the football program.

1982: Don't worry y'all, Sherrill was in no place to demand more money. Foge will have us back in the top 10 soon.

1985: Mike Gottfried gonna get us back. Stop complaining.

1988: Paul Hackett is what this team needs.

1993: Back to the Future everyone. Wooooo!

1996: Dinocat gonna save us. In Steve We Trust.

2000: Sharing a practice facility with the Steelers is going to have the 5 star recruits lining up!

2001: Heinz Field going to put this team back on the map.

2005: Hometown hero Wanny going to get this ship righted.

2007: Steveo's back. Back again. Going to get things fixed (except for carpet in the practice facility).

2011: Freddy Kruger is the right man for the job.

2011: Oops I mean the High Octane Huckster

2012: Oops I mean Chryst our Savior

2015: Nard Dog going to do the trick.

LOL. And I left a lot of things out. But don't worry. Just a little more patience is all that is required.

1) Your logic is flawed amigo. Narduzzi had NOTHING to do with what's happened over the last 35 years. Nothing...

2) You live in a vacuum. Other schools go through disappointments; failed coaching searches, disappointing losses, etc...

FSU fans are always reminiscing about how many national championships they could have had. How many coaches did Alabama go through before they hired Saban? How many coaches did ND go through after Holtz resigned and before they hired Kelley????

Disappointments on different levels happen all the time.

3) If you don't like the direction of the program and you're in that much agony, find another school to root for. Believe me, you won't be missed...

Are you delusional? Comparing Pitt's 35 year downturn to temporary glitches that Bama, FSU and ND have had?

Or are you just that great of a troll? If it's the later then nice job.
