Bryce Hargrove had a good feeling when he crossed the finish line, and the first face he saw belonged to Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi.

He had finished running the 40-yard dash at Pitt's camp this summer, and Narduzzi was holding a stopwatch.

“He stopped the watch and had a big grin on his face,” Hargrove said.

Hargrove, a rising senior defensive lineman from Akron (Ohio) Coventry High School, didn't bother to ask about his time.

“Obviously, it was something good,” said Hargrove, who said he previously ran the 40 in 4.9 seconds.

Hargrove earned a scholarship offer at last month's camp, and Friday he said he plans to enroll next year. At 6-foot-6, 250 pounds, Hargrove is Pitt's eighth prospect from the Class of 2016.

Hargrove has 14 scholarship offers, but he chose Pitt over Cincinnati and Rutgers.

“He was excited,” Hargrove said of Narduzzi when he told him the news. “He was a little worried, but I think he knew.”

Hargrove was a productive pass rusher for Coventry, recording 9 1⁄2 sacks, five quarterback hurries and an interception as a junior. He also played tight end.

“I can stop the run, too,” he said, “but I can get to the quarterback.”

Hargrove is the first Coventry player in 53 years to earn a Division I scholarship offer, but he's not the school's most famous pass rusher. That distinction belongs to Steelers linebacker James Harrison, who was a walk-on at Kent State.
