I was watching the replay against Morehead State and.... watching Artis' D and.... he is a pretty good defender these days... MUCH better than he used to be.

If you are covering a guy on the perimeter and he tries to take it to the hoop you need to stay between your man and the hoop.... and Artis does a pretty good job of it. And, he is bigger than most guards that he might be covering and they are a bit intimidated by his size and strength.

Sterling Smith on the other hand had a hideous day defensively. Hopefully he pulls out of it by the Davidson game.

Ever play or coach the game Zara? (not rec ball or intramurals) There are many times where coaches teach "Ball - You - Man D. In that case you stay "in front of your man" on D and deny him the ball. Of courser that
requires weakside help on the backside (of course weakside help with these recent Pitt teams is non existent).
BTW, Ball - You- Man is usually employed with very good an quick defensive players and doubt it would ever
work with these guys. So with said, I agree with your assessment of Artis, he is playing better on the defensive
end. IMO the reasons are twofold: 1. Jamie has told them, poor D and you're on the bench. He probably told
them that last year too, but with no depth he couldn't enforce it. This year
Artis knows there's a logjam at the 3 and he Better play D

2. Given #1, Artis is hustling and really trying to develop his defensive skills.
As you know, Good D mainly calls for hustle and court awareness, Toss
in he's also more experienced and for a big guy he has the quicks, Put
these three ingredients together and you get what you mentioned.

Chescat.... maybe you should try to get your posts organized before you start criticizing others. If I ever posted something that looked like your post I would IMMEDIATELY edit it and fix the problems. There are also ways to preview what you post before you post it.

To insinuate that someone that played the game more necessarily knows more about the game is... absurd. Take Curtis Aiken for example. He played the game a lot more than you or me and, well... every once in a while he says something that has some significance. But, does he come across as someone having a good understanding of the game?? Not much.

As far as Jamel Artis and 'denying the ball'.... what they heck are you talking about?? I have not seen him playing that style of D at all. Yeah, always nice to criticize someone for something they were NOT talking about.

Yeah, great to get insightful responses to the posts that one makes.

NOT!

LOL I knew that might probably piss you off, but it wasn't my attention. You need to put aside your anger and look at what I posted. I knew you had no clue about the type of D I explained. IF you took reading 101,you'd have noticed that I was talking about a D that is sometimes used in PLACE of being between your man and the basket that you mentioned. Nowhere did I say that Artis played it...RE READ without being insulted and you'll come to your senses. Also note that it works with advanced defensive players, and I clearly stated that with our recent Defense, no coach would attempt it at Pitt. So of course you never saw Artis"denying the ball!

BTW, I never explained my basketball experience on here, but people that have been around the game DO in fact usually know more and tend to have more insight., sorry but I disagree with you on that one. I'm no better on here than anyone else but I have been involved with the game extensively and tend to look at the game not only as a fan. It's pretty easy on here to see who is here to criticize or make fun. Also easy to see who knows what the hell they're talking about. Also, I've noticed quite a few posters attacking you recently...hmmm. My editing has been poor you're right on that., For some reason it doesn't take...but I'll try again. Lighten up and Merry Christmas.

If only he watched games multiple times to come up with such stunning insight as players being "tired" or possibly having a "touch of the flu".

Nice Scruffy..... I should say that YOUR posts in particular are REALLY WORTHLESS. Nothing like worshiping the world of ignorance. So, I just put you on IGNORE.

I knew what that defense was called, 'deny the ball', and that FINALLY came to you and nonetheless you try to say that I "don't have a clue" as to what it is all about. Yeah I'm sure.

As far as people that have played the game more thinking they know more about the game... maybe THINKING you know more was your big mistake. You make for a good example how this does not hold up in practice.

If you are trying to make a foray into the land if idiocy so you can be among the other idiots around here (like Goldie... LOL) that 'attack' me.... you are doing a good job if it.

Ok Zara whatever....I won't waste my time with your personally defensive nonsense. Enjoy Pitt basketball
from your perspective and have a good time with your developing fan club of posters that I see on here.

Aside from Zara's comments, which illustrate all too well just who IS knowledgeable and who isn't, but not with the result he intended, I'd suggest a 3rd factor in improving Artis's defense:

Jamel has lost weight.

He looks to have a completely different body from hs freshman year. It started ast year but has continued. Being slimmer and stronger SHOUD help his defense, particularly with the emphass Jamie is clearly putting on linking defense and playing time.

Good "3rd" point. I wish I'd have thought of that one. He probably has slimmed down and gotten stronger as you suggested. That might also add to his quicks. IMO Defense is the one area of the game where hard work will pay off in playing time, ESPECIALLY in Dixon's priority list. Like I said before, last year he might have threatened less time but he couldn't afford to sit his starters...there were no reliable backups.
With all that said, no way IMO is this a very good defensive team. They are hustling though, and I hope they can pick up what Dixon's preaching and undoubtedly working them through in practice.
