I have no doubts. He's got everything you need to play a long time in the league.

He's too old to go in the 1st but he's a solid mid 2nd Rounder similar to Young. I think he's a hybrid of Young and Patterson. He has Young's scoring prowess and Patterson's playmaking ability.

He's the real deal. I just hope, selfishly, he decides to play for free for another year because even if we won the NC next year and he won National Player of the Year, it would be tough to take a 24 year old in the 1st.

Sorry, but I disagree.

He is an excellent college player, no doubt, but he's not consist enough with his shot and he doesn't attack the rim hard enough to stick in the NBA.

He is a really good college player and may be a great college player next year. He has a chance to be a second round pick, but has to improve athletically.
at this point, more likely, his chance at the NBA will be like Lamar, Development league, if he does great, then a shot.

Why? if he's good enough, why not?
It's a financial decision. He is good, but not so good that there wouldn't be comparable players 3-4 years younger. From a long term investment standpoint, if two guys are equal or near equal, you probably take the younger guy most times, especially in the first round. At best, because of his skill set and age (especially if he comes back to Pitt next year), he would be a middle to late second round pick. Also, lots of teams draft overseas guys who they have no intention of bringing over any time soon for salary cap reasons I believe, that kills about ten picks every year (mostly second round). Sam young was better, and where did he go?

You also have to consider his NBA vs college position. In college he was a 4/3 and has just transitioned into a 3/2. In the NBA he is probably solely a 2 if he makes it . That is similar to Lamar Patterson's situation. He may make the league but in a way similar to Lamar. Because he is a couple of inches taller than Lamar he might be a 2nd round pick vs just an invited tryout player. However, IMHO, there is no way he gets drafted either (1) as a guaranteed money 1st round pick, or (2) before his senior year is completed. I expect to see him back at Pitt next year.

Lamar was drafted in the 2nd round. I think Jamel has a legit shot.

I think he is very similar to Lamar. I have been surprised he developed into such a good playmaker, that was something you didn't see a lot of from him, but could see from Lamar a little more earlier. Lamar was a more refined player with limited athletic ability, Artis is marginally more athletic, but was not a refined.

People are right, if a guy is listed 6-7 in college he is closer to 6-5. He is real borderline as an NBA three, his height for it is marginal and he is below average as an athlete. Definitely not a strong enough athlete to be a two.

He has developed so well, maybe he can get there. But, no way, no how he gets into the NBA if he comes out this year. His starting point physically is so far back for NBA athletes. He could definitely be a guy who goes over seas and has a long career there and does well, or maybe works his way into the league.

His shot ... When he looks in, its about as good as any we have seen in the program. His rotation on the ball is REAL snappy. Lamar ended up being a really threatening three point shooter, but Artis has more ability to shoot moving around a bit, does not need to be as open or set.

I do worry about Young going early ...

Watching Artis to me looks just like watching Carmelo Anthony. Hopefully he wins a championship at Pitt and then I think he will have a productive NBA career.

Artis has the physical skills and height to play the 3 in the NBA but he has a way to go to be NBA ready……IMO

I think he could get to the NBA if he continues to progress, but Lamar made the NBA as a 2, and I think Jamel would have to prove he could be a two as well.

Sam Young was often played the two in the NBA as well.

I'm really interested to see what becomes of Artis and Young. A handful of years ago I think these guys would be NBA locks. Sports these days are just so different. The guys who make the NBA aren't just freaks in terms of skills, but they're also physical freaks. Both guys will need to bump down a position (numerically) to even get a look, and that's using their listed measurements.

Sports are crazy these days. I have some old issues of Baseball America from the 90's and pitchers who could hit 90 MPH or greater were given a special flame throwing ball indicating they hit 90 -- literally every team has probably 10/12 pitchers sitting 90+ MPH nowadays and most teams have a guy who can hit within a MPH or 2 of 100. The NBA has kids like Kristaps Porzingis and Karl-Anthony Towns with legit guard skills at 7 foot. The NFL has old time DT types playing LB now. It's just insane the physical gifts required to play professionally before even getting to the raw skills required.
