Just around the corner from Paradise
on the March Madness TBS group of panelists, I might have preferred that he had been in Hershey to watch the PIAA AAAA Boys HS finals. Maybe he could've spent some time watching Tony Carr perhaps? I didn't see the game, but from what I read, it sounds like he's a good leader and all-around player, and still an uncommitted Junior. Granted, some big programs (Nova and MD) have offered, but on paper, he sounds just like the kind of point guard Pitt could use. Anybody here ever see him play? Any interest in him by us?

HTP!

Tony Carr leads Roman Catholic to AAAA Title

Jamie Dixon has been tied to Mustapha Heron's hip since the moment the season ended.

Dixon has his priorities in order. That's where he needs to be and you can't fault him one bit for lack of effort in this case.

Re: Why not both?

Heron is THE priority and Dixon is doing everything to make sure he keeps him. Unfortunately a commitment isn't good enough. If the coaches don't continue to show them "enough love" you risk losing them. And maybe it helps with perception/PR as well. I don't even follow that many people on Twitter but have seen 8-10 tweets about Dixon being there today.

I'm sure the recruitniks will chime in on the kid you mentioned but I suspect if Dixon thought it was more important to scout him yesterday than be on TV he would have. Maybe the kid has no interest in Pitt - it's been said here many times Dixon identifies kids he thinks he can land and moves on from ones he doesn't feel optimistic about. Who knows.

Re: Why not both?

Heron is a elite recruit Pitt needs to hold onto.

I'm sure the staff are doing their due diligence with everyone else, but the primary focus should be on Heron right now. The kitchen sink needs to be thrown at this kid, and rightfully it is.

Well, here's hoping

we can reel him in. I can't argue that Heron is everything you'd want in a G; still, it would be so much nicer if we could have 2 top 150 guards in the 2016 class. I know we have Wilson coming in next year, but I am not getting a whole lot of vibe that Wilson is a top D1 prospect - of course, time will tell

Re: Well, here's hoping

Dixon has seen Marcus Lovett twice and Mustapha Heron twice, so it's not like he isn't out recruiting hard. Plus, Smoke has seen Lovett and also watched Cassius Winston.

Re: Well, here's hoping

Wilson is 77th in ESPNs top 100. And according to them he had offers from Florida, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Bama, Tennessee, Miami and a few others. Sounds like a good D1 prospect to me assuming that's accurate.

Given that Lovett and Winston

are in the heart of B1G (Chicago and Detroit) I would suspect we would be far behind the teams in that conference for recruiting; but it's nice to see we are looking at other top guard prospects. As I said, I've only "looked" at Tony Carr from what I've seen leading up to the PA AAAA Finals. I like us recruiting kids who come from state championship programs

Re: Well, here's hoping

I'd love to see LoVett somehow commit. Still, Damon Wilson is pretty highly touted by all the recruiting sites and is listed as a PG/SG. I assume he'll certainly be in the mix at the PG spot going forward, especially if Pitt lands Heron.

Has Wilson's stock dropped? Seems a consensus Top 100 player to me, no?

Re: Well, here's hoping

Seems Pitt loves Lovett but he has some VERY serious grade issues. Sounds like he's a bit of a long shot to qualify.

Not sure if his stock is dropping

I'm just going off of some earlier comments made a few weeks ago that suggested that Wilson should not be looked upon to come in and make an impact. That being said, I'd hope that whoever we are recruiting, we finally get a potential leader, as well as kids who have a better-than-average BB IQ

Lovett? Let's see.....reminds me of Derek Mostella or Jamont Gordon or many of these other grade challenged nomads who have no chance of ending up at Pitt.

I think that there are restrictions on how much contact Dixon or anyone on his staff can have with recruits at this time of the year. And he was in New England last week recruiting the day after we were bounced from the NIT. So I think he knows where he needs to be to have the biggest impact.

The question may be whether he is recruiting LoVett or Moore.

If that 5'7 150lb point guard can drive in the lane regularly and hit the open 3 then I'd be fine with it.

Re: Maybe Moore will mimic TJ Mc Connell

I don't know about this Moore PG. I know LoVett has some academic issues, but he too seems like the type. And, I believe Dixon and Co. thought they may've had that type with Woodall and then Newkirk. Hell, if Pitino doesn't pull Cat Barber's scholarship, I bet Newkirk's either starting or backing up at PG for NC State right now.

But, admittedly, Woodall wasn't an elite player. Though, I'd love to him on this current team. And, Newkirk seemed to regress this season more so than any current player on the roster. Maybe that changes in the off season?

What's the word on Moore? I was actually searching for him... What's his first name? I didn't see any 5'7" guards for 2015. Is he 2016?

Edit: Never mind. I found him. Hopefully Smoke's recruiting him and LoVett. Pitt could use some PG prospects.

Re: Maybe Moore will mimic TJ Mc Connell

I think Pitt is more actively recruiting Moore as part of the '16 pool of PG's they are interested in and evaluating closely (along with Gibbs, Winston, etc).

Lovett, I would guess, they are in a monitoring stage and following along the situation. Stay in contact...if he qualifies late and a spot is open and they are comfortable with him...they could be a landing spot for him as others do not seem to be making a large push for him.

Souf
I think you meant TERRY Rozier but I'd take Mike in a minute for the Pitt gridiron - LOL

Re: Maybe Moore will mimic TJ Mc Connell

There are a couple Morgan Park full game videos available on YouTube. Neither that I watched seem to be games that Charlie Moore went off. He had some big scoring games down the stretch like LoVett did, but rarely shot in the portions I watched. Both have frequently been in the 20's lately, with at least one game each in the 40's.

Moore's #2 for Morgan Park. He and LoVett are listed at 511 and 6-0. I have no idea how big they really are but the point is both are about the same size. Unless all the opposing guards are real Smurfs, they look bigger than the 5-6 or 5-7 some had mentioned Moore does seem awfully quick and he is usually bringing the ball up court when he is in the game but he seems to defer to LoVett. Probably natural with LoVett being the senior.

Pitt recruited but missed on 5-7 Drew Lavender in 2002/3. He played two years each at Oklahoma and Xavier and averaged about 11 ppg and was a Bob Cousy finalist.

We really must sign a PG either in the '15 class or '16 class. Damon Wilson is coming this Fall but with JRob as a senior to be and Newkirk to be a junior if he's still here, we need at least two ball handlers in the system.

Benji Bell is in play for this Spring but he's both more of a shooter and a junior to be. LoVett has the baggage. For '16, we have shown interest in 3 PG's, Cassius Winston, TJ Gibbs and now Charlie Moore. One of them would probably be a primary candidate for a '16 slot.

Re: Maybe Moore will mimic TJ Mc Connell

All sounds good, Harve. Hoping with Smoke unlikely to bail as Slice did, Dixon put some decent classes together. Closing this '15 class well that already has a Top 100 player and superior JUCO/transfer big to the others Pitt's brought in of late would be a great start going forward.

Maybe the growth spurt already happened?!

Thanks for the update, Harve. Part of my original comment about Charlie Moore mimicking TJ was a slight against Rivals. I've noticed that their data base is not always up-to-date. When I first looked at the Roman Catholic junior guard, Tony Carr, Rivals has him listed at about 6'1". According to a buddy of mine who was at the game, Carr is at least 6'3" if not taller. If indeed Charlie Moore is already 5'11", then again, Rivals has failed to keep current on their recruits. I don't think Rivals listed ANY D1 teams on Moore's radar, but I'm sure if he's that good, there are scores of programs checking him out.

And not that size matters all that much . . . but having some length at the guard spot could certainly help with defending. But right now I'd give a lot for us to have a consistent ball-handler at point guard; one who's not afraid to dribble-drive and finish, or pass to an open wing for a wide-open shot. And if LoVett truly has that much baggage, please, Pitt, don't waste a schollie on him.

Re: Maybe the growth spurt already happened?!

I generally subtract about 1 1/2 inch from the program height. The program height might be fairly close to the real height wearing shoes or may be wildly optimistic.

Rivals is always behind on player updates.

Carr was ok. He didn't stand out in a game that was waiting for someone to leap forward. It was a boring game between the two AAAA Philly schools. He was probably the best basketball player on the floor, but knowing his offer sheet, I didn't leave thinking he was a guy we needed. I wasn't dissapointed Dixon wasn't there. It was a weak pool of talent over all. Some real good mid major players, but no one that I wanted Pitt to grab. Neuman Goretti has a sophomore guard to keep an eye on.
