At least Georgia Tech can't pass

And we have always no matter who the coach is struggled to defend that option offense. Our only hope to keep it close is to stack 8 in the box and hope to stop the run and pray he can't throw with any accuracy.

Their passing game is still Georgia Tech-ish, but it's light years ahead of what it was last year. You can almost guarantee they'll make some plays in the passing game next week.

Believe it or not. When we had Phil Bennett and Todd Graham both those guys knew how to smother the triple option.

Our defense couldn't stop the run in the 2nd half against a poor rushing team. What is it going to do against a great rushing team with a triple option????

As far as GT passing, they won't have to pass the ball that much. They'll be able to hit a few long ones easily and run the ball at will. The GT game scares me with this abysmal Pitt defense.

Their one good wideout (Jeune?) will have a career day for sure. He's tall and fast and will be running wide open all day.

secondary gets a reprieve next week
This thought has been a comfort to me.....until I watched the 3rd quarter last night.

To be honest GT presents an entirely different type running game. Marshall locked our front 7 up and ran that big horse at them.

Gt will come at us with that option. Pick your poison. Hoping we can defend it better than against Navy, although that Navy QB was as good an option QB as you will see.

We also had some damn good talent along the DL and at middle linebacker. The gap between the talent we had on defense in 2008-2009 and now is bad..
That said, I want to see how the Pitt defense and Narduzzi handle GT this week. Last year, the flexbone offense destroyed Pitt's defense. I am not optimistic because the key to stopping the option is all 11 players being disciplined and executing their job. Thus far this season, it's a rare play on defense where all 11 players actually fulfill their assignments.

Narduzzi wants to use an 8 or even a 9 man front by playing his safeties much closer to the line of scrimmage than a traditional 4-3. That is one reason why MSU had such a good run defense. It also puts a premium on good safety play.

I don't think Pitt has the talent at safety to do this but I also realize that our front 7 needs the additional support to stop the run.

I hope the coaching staff spent a lot of time this summer going over the game film from last year and the Navy game. Georgia Tech isn't at their best, but their passing game has improved from last year enough that Pitt can't expect to make them strictly one-dimensional.

Even though they lost to Miami, they had a time of possession edge of 39:54 to 20:06. And had it not been for a few fumbles and a late interception this is a close one. Pitt simply isn't built to quick strike like Miami could against GT's defense.

Pitt has been stout against the run, but this is a different animal that they have yet to show they can effectively stop.

"Our only hope to keep it close "..........only a Pitt fan would say an 8 point favorite is an only hope basket case.... plenty of "hopes" out there

Well considering the T Webb will be keying the motion B Back all day, I would probably take my chances with their passing game. His history of bad angle pursuit is rivaled by none.

I think Jarrett and Co will control the A back dives and the quit hit QB off guard power runs. It's the traditional read-pitch wide runs that already have me uneasy. Price and Blair can set the edge all day but if Webb & Mitchell/Whitehead fail to take proper angles on the pitch man, it will get ugly in a hurry.
