Anyone have any stats or opinions on Ayers as a ref?

gary ... here's something else.

The refs who are selected for the Final Four are done so by a rating and ranking system throughout the tournament.

Ayers also did the Final Four in 2016.
I was aware he does big games and has a good Rep. I was wondering more about style. Does he routinely let them play? I could be wrong but I seem to remember him doing another similarly called Pitt game. Louisville or a game in the South?

I wish the website stat sheet was still active, as it used to track number of fouls called per game.

The issue there is that no one ever actually tracks which of the three refs actually whistled the foul, only total fouls called in the games reffed by each referee.

I guess it averages out well enough over the year, and most refs fell in the range of 34-39 fouls per game. And Curtis Shaw notoriously always ended up on the high side of that.

Still, my take is that Ayers is somewhat in the middle.

Personally, I’ve never had a problem with Ayers with the sole exception of not giving James Robinson a deserved “and one” for a chance to tie the game near the end of the 2014 ACC tournament semi final against Virginia. He was starring right at it!!

Then again, only 27 total fouls were called in that game, and this included 5 in the last 10 seconds by both teams. So maybe he was just being consistent— lol.
