Article Barnes expected to accept AD job at Oregon State later this week

A first year coach months into the job on the hotseat?

Wow. Talk about dysfunctional. I'm sure we would land a great coach after turning up the heat on a guy 10 games into his tenure.

Yes his seat is far, far, far from being even warm, especially given the roster he was handed.

Pitt Athletic Director Scott Barnes Asis expected to accept the same position at Oregon State later this week, multiple sources told Panther-Lair.com.

Now it makes sense why he was so checked out at the Buffalo game.

Commence all the hand wringing and woe-is-me sniffling.

In reality, as soon as the worried masses accept the concept that everyone is replaceable and any employee is hired for their utility and not their longevity, they will all sleep better at night. Such is the current state of employment in all industries. The days of "lifers" are long over. Employment contracts are worthless.

Everyone is hired to be fired. Or, you are simply working towards your next job. If you don't realize that...you have your head in the sand.

Next man/woman up.

Barnes says he isn't leaving. If you are, just go. If not, then I'm not surprised. Just more terrible reporting by the junior varsity pgh media.

Oregon St? Wow, makes a huge move with bb program then quits? Are they pushing him out?
What a dick.
So Oregon State is a better job too? Pitt must be pitiful? Start spending money!

*Of course I don't donate any :)

No one expects a lifer anymore but people do expect 3-4 years of service or it just wasn't worth the time. If they wanted a 1-2 year plug in for a certain job they would have hired an independent contractor/consultant to complete said job. You don't hire ADs that way. Should you expect to hire an AD and keep him for 10 years or more, no that is not realistic anymore. But you should expect 3-8 years of service.

I don't necessarily disagree. A reasonable length of stay should be the expectation.

I just argue that it isn't the reality. Especially under the current conditions at Pitt. Plucking a guy from the western US, a little on the cheap, with the acrimonious factions of fans who have million dollar appetites and ten cent wallets, and playing second fiddle to the pro teams in town...isn't an easy job. And to get a top guy in place, you are going to have to pay big dollars to attract and retain.

Also a rumor out there about his daughter being ill and he wants to be closer to her.

No. he did not say that. Wording when these things start is the key. The articles said he's likely to accept. He said he hasn't accepted anything yet. And he very well may be telling the truth. But he didn't say he isn't leaving.

You are correct, hasn't left yet is what I meant.

I figured Barnes would leave before the Stallings hire wrecks the basketball program. Leaving before ACC play even starts is perfect timing for him.

Nice to have him in the middle of that discussion at the same time Canada is getting offered by LSU.

If there is truth to that rumor, then it becomes much more understandable and a move I could not criticize.

Not sure, but now, my insider connections, gained without ever donating a cent or even paying for game tickets, confirms that Barnes is definitely gone. :)

Another report hiding behind., " sources", If you are too bolllezz to quote a source, why write the rumor, anyone can write garbage. Maybe he is considering it, and maybe he is not, Does the site need some atta boys .If the source asks for anonymity, make them prove they know what they are talking about. Don't report something you read somewhere else,. This crap gets old.

I didn't read it, I was told by someone with actual inside knowledge.

Ummm...because you don't divulge a source unless you don't want a source ever again. Are some sources ill informed or un-trustworthy? Of course. Either the reporter figures that out and avoids getting burned too often or the public figures out the reporter is constantly wrong and they decide for the reporter by not giving credence to their reports.

Sources have even faked documents to "prove" their information before. "Source" reporting is going nowhere and nor should it. You should just pay attention and decide which journalists are consistently credible.

I passed the Athletics Administration suite today on my way to the Pete food court. This qualifies me as a self-proclaimed 'insider', and I can report that Barnes was not seen wandering around the building nor in line at the new burrito counter. Clearly, he must be a goner.
