Pitt trailing 1-0 with WVU still batting in the 1st.

This is not the first time I have scratched my head at Mike Bell’s use of his pitching staff. Chris Gomez started the earlier game against WVU and held them to one hit over six innings. Today, Bell started Steven Hansen, who has a 6-plus ERA and he was touched for the first inning run. It could have been a much more costly inning, but WVU had a runner thrown out trying to steal. Unless Gomez is hurt, this start makes no sense. Hansen and Gomez both are seniors, so it’s not the case of giving a younger player a chance.

West Virginia Math: WVU announcers said this is the 195th meeting between the two teams, and WVU leads the series 109 to 92.

In the rest of the world, that is 201 prior meetings.

Maybe they counted a couple doubleheaders as only one meeting?

🤔

The color man for the game is a former WVU player. Showing off the quality of a WVU degree, he says he finds it “fascinating” that Pitt is in the ACC since it is the only northern school in the conference. Of course, everyone knows that Boston and Syracuse were in the old Confederacy. And, West Virginia fits so well geographically into the Big 12.

He also wonders about the “culture shock”Franks must have had coming from San Diego to Pittsburgh. Unlike the easy adjustment anyone has going to Morgantown from a place that has a public library and indoor plumbing.

You're killing me tonight... 🤣🤣🤣

That's hilarious. Sometimes its fun to listen to hometown announcers though.

I really haven't followed the team this year unfortunately so I am not qualified to post this but I will anyway.

At this point in the season, with 11 games left and an NCAAT bid locked up unless we free-fall, this WVU game is basically of equal importance to Pitt as the ACC games. I would have started Pitt's ace in this game since nobody's pitched in 2 weeks. Then I would have also thrown him Sunday at BC if necessary.

Maybe this guy was their ace and Bell and I were both wrong.

Do you get paid to post idiotic comments on this message board? The ACC games are more important. It impacts seeding in the ACC Tournament and winning the Coastal would be a big feather in the cap. We will be using our best pitchers against BC, as we should.

Nah, the NCAA doesn't look at conference record. Each team is judged as an "independent" based on overall record, SOS, and RPI. They could have started their ace tonight and threw him again on Sunday. He hasn't pitched in 2 weeks. His arm wouldn't have fallen off by throwing Sunday on 90 hours rest. Could have had him on a low pitch count.

To further my point about the strange decision to start Hansen, Gomez came on in relief and pitched 2.2 scoreless innings.

I certainly would not have started Myers or Gilbertson. Pitt still has to qualify for the ACC tourney and only conference games count. BC is no pushover. They have two players who Baseball America rates as potential first round draft choices. I might have started Corcoran if he was not coming off an injury. I would have started Gomez, who beat WVU in the earlier game.

Who are Pitt's Top 4/5 starters?

Myers
Gilbertson
Corcoran (who had just come back from injury before the shutdown)
Hanson (who was the #3 starter when Corcoran was hurt)
Gomez
I would have thrown Myers then and also Sunday with a low pitch count limit on Sunday. It would have been a good dry run for what he may have to do in the ACCT or NCAAT

That’s not how college baseball works. This weekend’s games are significantly more important than yesterday. The importance of yesterday was primarily in getting our guys back in the swing of things before the real games start up again this weekend. It makes no sense to screw with the weekend rotation and mess things up for the next two ACC series for a midweek OOC game.

Wow! Here is another example where the CORRECT course of action is to do tbe OPPOSITE of what SMF says what he would do.

For those scoring at home, the number of incorrect examples he has provided to us amounts to a book thicker than the New York City phone book. 🤣

It doesn't screw anything up.

The ace goes Wednesday and Sunday. Your #2 and #3 guys go Friday and Saturday. Then you can throw your ace again the following Friday. Sunday to Friday is PLENTY of rest.

Well, with Pitt in very real danger of losing out and missing the NCAA Tournament, the decision to NOT throw their ace on 2 weeks rest vs WVU may prove pretty costly. If we miss the NCAAT, it will be by 1 or 2 games. Maybe we beat WVU if he pitches instead if stupidly giving him 2 more days rest. He could have pitched Wednesday, Sunday, and Friday without his arm falling off.

Of course maybe if he pitches that game his arm explodes and we aren't having this conversation.

Or maybe he pitches a no hitter than night, and the confidence he gained from that game would have led him to throwing two more no hitters the next two times he pitched.

Or maybe he pitches that night and get bombed and it ruins his confidence and he isn't the same the rest of the year.

Hey, just making stuff up out of whole cloth is fun! I can see why you do it so often.

Losing one mid-week game to West Virginia is NOT what is keeping this team from making the NCAA tournament.

Obviously.

Hahahahaahahahahah. Please stop posting about college baseball. Please. I promise I’m 50x more knowledgable than you on college baseball and there’s others on here who know even more than me.

You don’t throw your weekend starter in a random midweek game. It’s just not how it works. Anywhere.

If Pitt baseball would have been vaccinated in March and thrown their ace in a relatively meaningless midweek game, they would probably be getting ready to be the number 1 overall seed in the tournament!

How many times has your ace had 2 weeks rest for a midweek start? Should have gone Wednesday and Sunday. It just takes a small amount of outside the box thinking.

We are going to miss the NCAA Tournament by literally 1 game so the WVU loss will absolutely keep us out....and yes you can obviously replace that L with any other but when you dont have much of a season left to play and your ace has rested for 2 weeks, he should have pitched that night

We may not have beaten WVU had he pitched. He may have suffered a career-ending injury in that game. We don't know. We do know, however, we are in serious jeopardy of missing the NCAAT by 1 game.
