Here is the Press Release from Pitt on the incoming seven recruits. It breaks down who they are and what coach Jordano thinks of them. If you want any more information on them, search there name/Perfect game. They have some good stuff regarding baseball recruiting.

In addition, Alex Amos, Chris Gomez, Dan Hammer, Nico Popa, Peyton Reesman, and Zach Zientarski are already on campus. Jessel won't be coming, and we're still chasing a couple JuCo/transfer guys.

There are seven names on that list. One of them was taken in the MLB draft, in the 31st round. At some level I guess that's OK, because you don't have to worry about guys signing pro contracts. But what does that say about the quality of some of these guys, that in a draft that lasts 40 rounds (plus all the supplemental picks) that teams didn't even take a flyer on them in the 38th round or something like that to see if they could get them to sign?

What about the two players he said would be announced later? Are those the JUCO guys they are still trying to find.

Did the 7 signed take into account the 4 guys they lost in the draft? Obviously, they expected the pitcher to go high and leave, but I don't think they expected the SS to go that high and I don't know if the other two signed with MLB teams.

Okay, you mentioned two players not listed: Popa and Gomez. Who are they?
You don't mention Calvo. Is he still enrolling?

If they didn't expect a guy who led the ACC in hitting and was on some All American teams to get drafted fairly high and potentially leave then someone was seriously asleep at the switch.

The other two guys were Nick Yarnell, who signed with the Dodgers and Aaron Schnurbusch, who was a senior so let's hope they weren't expecting him to come back. In any event, he signed with the White Sox.

In November, when they signed these 7, I don't think anyone had an inkling that LeBlanc would lead the ACC in hitting and be drafted in the 4th round. In addition to that, he said in an interview that he didn't realize he would be eligible for the draft until recently. Remember that this was his sophomore season and usually players aren't eligible for the draft until after their junior year. It doesn't look like any of these signed kids are a college SS.

Well I certainly agree that LeBlanc had a better season than anyone expected. But if you are seriously suggesting that it is possible that the Pitt coaches didn't know the MLB draft rules and do not know who is and is not eligible to be drafted then that would be a pretty serious indictment of the coaching staff. Are you really suggesting that the Pitt coaches didn't know that the rules aren't the same for guys who go to prep school for a year after they are originally drafted?

I mean let's put it this way. I knew that it was at least possible that he was eligible. How could no one on the Pitt staff have known?

If you read the story about him, he said he didn't even know he was eligible until a couple of months before the draft. So I doubt if the Pitt coaches knew it last fall or I assume they would have signed a SS. Also, in the November story, Jordano is quoted as saying there would be 2 more signings. I suspect he was talking about replacing the two juniors who got drafted and signed. If he knew 3 would leave, I think it is safe to assume he would have said there would be 3 more signings.

I just wish we knew who these other signings were by now: it is July and most of the players who signed last November already are on campus. It is pretty late to be trying to find uncommitted players, unless they already have them and just neglected to send out a press release.

I can understand a player not knowing the draft eligibility rules. If Pitt's coaches didn't know something as basic as that then they are completely and utterly inept. Like I said, I knew that it was at least possible that he was eligible to be drafted. It would have been relatively easy for me to determine if he was or not if there was any reason why I needed to figure that out. Of course there wasn't a need, so I didn't bother. But Pitt's coaches? Yeah, I can think of a reason or two why they might want to figure that out.

There is no excuse, absolutely none, for Pitt's coaches to not know whether or not LeBlanc would be eligible for the draft. Or even worse yet to assume that he wasn't eligible when he was. No excuse.
