I have been super busy coaching all my basketball teams. Two of them are finishing up this week. I have a lot of general basketball information and observations I have been making from my own research and coaching and what I have seen in the games so far from Pitt. I will be posting a lot next week.

I am going to post a lot about articles with analytics and other data I have found.

I am wondering if there are any data/math posters on here to help clarify and explain data that I have found collected not on Pitt specifically but about things like areas with different percentages of making the shot and the difference in shooting percentage for a shooter when he catches to shoot rather than taking a dribble or two dribbles to shoot. Much of this is now being collected and displayed for the NBA on NBA.com. @shrugginatlas

Oh hey @rockypanther, I know more than a few things about that particular topic. Anything in particular that you're looking for regarding catch and shoot vs. pull up? Because I actually sat in on a great talk at Sloan a few years ago about just that data, I'll try to find a pdf when I get home.

Hey. I have a few wonderings. I will message you.

i don't know nearly as much about basketball analytics as @thirteenNINE, or lots of other people, but do feel free to message me, too, for what little it's worth.

The thing about analytics is that is doesn't exactly make a game better. Take baseball, it is much more boring and not the same as it was before, because everything is analytics driven.

In basketball I am afraid it is going to either go dunk it or three, nothing else is worth it. Which again will make for a less enjoyable sport.

well, that's where analytics end and strategy begins. if everybody is going to dunk it or take a three, then players/coaches will evolve, and there may be new opportunities for other tactics. analytics cannot tell you the appropriate strategy to take; they can only help to inform good strategic decision-making by resolving uncertainty.

Recruits--I think you are making it too simplistic. Things are messier. Everyone won't go 100% 3-ball or dunk/layup. Shot clock pressure will continue to force other shots to be taken. In addition, the nature of shooting ability/talent of individuals on rosters will mess with any attempt to be totally 3-balls and dunks. Just look at Pitt's current roster makeup as one example.

You mean like.......when baseball has the switch on and has all its defenders on the 1B/RF side of the field to try and punch the ball down the line of 3B/LF? Because they haven't figured that out yet.

Those are very basic analytics. Those aren’t the types of analytics teams are using to make decisions.

For a change this is actually a good thread hopefully some of the summary data will be posted along key assumptions, analytical interpretations and resulting conclusions.

right. and for a long time, defenses didn’t figure out to put more linebackers in against the wishbone. but tattonement wins out eventually, else you get fired.
