My first call would be to Charlie Partridge. I assume he'd decline, but at least offer him defensive coordinator + assistant head coach.
If not him, I agree with Sauce; promote from within with Manalac. I'd want to make a splash hire if we were losing Kade Bell, but Narduzzi's fingerprints will be on the defense no matter who is hired.

Bates to OSU is good for Pitt in the long run. If people from your program get hired by THE, then candidates see Pitt as a step away from Blue Blood.

If true he was close to retiring shortly anyway so not a big deal. Just promote from within and nothing really changes.

From an outsider, none of this makes sense for Ohio State. There was speculation Kelly would jump back to the NFL, so I thought they’d simply promote Hartline to OC and use the additional cash on a splash hire at DC.
I will say I’m happy for Bates. He was a solid DC and earned the opportunity to (likely) finish his career at his alma mater.
Bates is a good DC so that's why they want him. Could also part of the problem be that not every DC wants to the Ohio State DC position? There was talk that Larry Johnson got to do a certain scheme/system/rotation with his defensive line, that Knowles didn't like, so there was a bunch of defensive coordinator-defensive line coach tension at OSU during Knowles' entire tenure there. That could scare some coordinators away.
Are you just throwing his name out or is that a possibility? That would be a no brainer if he was interested.

Does Smith have any experience calling players on defense? I think he’d provide a boost on the recruiting trail, but I’ve always thought it was interesting Penn State brought him on as a CB Coach despite his background being on the offensive side of the ball.
Duzz spends most of his time with the defense. He can assist if need be.
Rumors are he has turned down a few HC jobs over the years to stay at PSU.
Just an idea. I'd like to see what that would look like both on the field and in area recruiting.
Because Bates running his OWN defense is an upgrade on what's out there. OSU doesn't make too many mistakes with their coaching hires

They seem to be moving away from using “all the money they have” on coaches.
As you said, it’s not an issue of not being able to afford coaches. They can afford whomever they want.
They just don’t want to spend that kind of money on coaches. Otherwise they could have kept Knowles.
I think you're going to see the amount coaches are getting come down in the wake of House and schools directly paying players.
I'm kind of like this regarding capel. Anyone can be a mediocre coach. Spend the money on the portal and get julius page off the broadcast booth and have him coach.
Capel is an X's and O's genius. Sometimes he tells them to switch on picks and other times he tells them to hedge. Like, if one strategy isn't working, he'll go to the other one. I read all the time on the hoops board how brilliant that is when we win a game.
