BEST--

1. New coach with a great reputation for success who creates excitement beyond Pittsburgh is hired almost immediately.

2. He convinces all potentially returning players to stay on board including Young and Artis.

3. He convinces the three signed LOI recruits not to ask for a release.

4. He finds a quality true big man to fill that last open ship and fill that huge donut hole we have in the middle.

5. We finish among the top 5 in the ACC and go to the NCAAs and make it to the Sweet 16.

6. We start a long run of being one of the top 5 teams in the ACC.

WORST--

1. New coach with only fair reputation is hired after several quality coaches turn us down and the process drags on for over a month.

2. new coach is unable to convince returning players to stay on board. Young and Artis leave to play in Europe, Wilson transfers, another player or two transfer as well.

3. He is unable to convince the three signed LOI recruits to stay. All three are given their release.

4. He is unable to finds a quality true big man to fill that last open ship and brings in a player similar to Maia as a last resort.

5. We finish near the bottom of the ACC with B.C.

6. We start a long run of struggling to even finish 0.500 most seasons and have coaching changes every 3-4 years each time hoping for the best but not getting there.

Which scenario is closer to being the most likely outcome?

The worst case scenario and it's not close.

I know a lot of people are bought into Gallagher and Barnes as the saviors of our athletic department, but there is very very little to base that belief on. I will be very pleasantly surprised if we shell out big money for a big name, but the odds are against it in my opinion. Not that such a hire is necessary to be successful (Dixon certainly didn't meet that criteria when he was hired), but there is absolutely no history of this administration (or any prior Pitt administration) shelling out huge money to take a HC away from another major job. It's not the route that was taken by Gallagher for the football HC hire, and I doubt it will be taken here.

I see a mid-major guy brought in who is in over his head, players transfer, he stinks at recruiting, has a bad look on the sidelines, makes excuses and ends up being fired.

Actually, I see another Ralph Willard being hired. There's my confidence in Barnes. Now prove me wrong, sir.

Who is to say Young, Artis, Wilson, etc. we're all coming back? There were rumors that 1 or more of them were leaving.

Sounds like Barnes is committed to doing his best to make it the Best Case vs Worst Case. That is a very good thing. But as Paco notes if he doesn't succeed it might be the end for Barnes.
