Thanks for posting that Captain my Captain.

This ranking seems to be very much slanted toward US universities. As you know, the criteria used to rank a university are very subjective and weighting different factors will influence rankings quite a bit. Australia has a number of very good universities that generally rank very high in various world rankings. I note that these prestigious universities are not ranked very highly in the USN&WR rankings.

The ranking system typically quoted here in Australasia is the QS rankings: http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2016

Pitt is ranked 145 in the QS. My employer (University of Otago) comes in at 169 in the QS and my son attends the University of Auckland which comes in at 81 in the QS. Otago and Auckland are way under-rated in the USN&WR ranking (239 and 152). Auckland is generally considered to be in the world top 100. I feel that the QS under-rates Pitt. I definitely tell that to my son!

I will say this: every student has the best university for them. Pitt was that for me and I had opportunities and experiences there that allow me to teach others at a well respected university on the other side of the world!

Another referenced Global University ranking is The Times Education: World University Ranking.

Global University Rankings place greater emphasis on a Universities Research Capability/Prowess.

That is the reason you will see good undergraduate programs like Notre Dame and Boston College ranked lower.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

If they have the best school in the world for computer science ranked at #24 in the computer science category, then their criteria is flawed.

I have for years realize the Rankings by Magazines are done not for Academic Reasons but for Business Reasons for the Magazine to sell and make money. It is often their biggest selling issues from Forbes/Fortune to Time to Newsweek to US News.

Penn State Posters used to quote them and live by them as Bibles to their Babel.

There are some Academic Publications also set up to rank Universities such as Princeton Review, Barrons, and Gourman Report. They too became Business Ventures over time. In Fact, The Gourman Report was set up in California by a Professor to make sure Western Universities in California would not be overlooked as Eastern and Midwestern Universities would cite their Superiority. It used Qualitative Mathematical Analysis by ratings various Departments such as Engineering, Physic etc. Yet, it had a over weighted Factors in it that was very subjected such as "Peer Reputation" and Public Reputation" and many Corporations way back in the 1960s to 1990s used it as a Guide for recruiting employees for Fortune 500 Corporations.

Again, it was an UCLA Professor that created it as a Public Relation tool to take on Eastern/Midwestern Publications and to recruit Students to their own Schools. It comes from the Stanford and Harvrad debates too? When I once flew with a brilliant Stanford Graduate in the 1970s and I commented to him as he he bragged he went to Stanford and I said to compliment him, "Oh, the Harvard of the West!" He responded and for the entire flight to Alaska said I needed corrected, "Harvard Only Could Wish To Match Stanford!" He went on to talk about his Field of Physic and also complimented Pitt Philosophy of Science Department being ranked with Stanford. The Gourman Graduate Schools Report is excellent reference guide for specific Department Rankings but still up to students to graduate and become successful on their own.

In 1990s much of this change as Fortune 500 Companies changed and Long Time Employment with just one corporation from Graduation to Retirement to Pension Plans changed with them. But the Ranking and Ratings Universities became a Full Time Business for Money Publication. I liken it to Anson Mount "Playboys All American Listings and Top 25 Teams" mixed it "Girls From the Pac-12" and other Conferences a must buy ever year for bragging rights among Ohio State, Pitt and Penn State and many CFB Fans.

There are other Rankings that have specific Ratings like Rhodes Scholarships but they are not published, others are such as Marshall and Fulbright Scholarships. Tehse are very subjective based on selection and the Military Academies and a small college in Oregon called REED actually has the most Rhodes Scholars. Even WVU out paces Pitt, PSU, and Ivy League in that category due to Rockefeller Foundation influences I learned from a Senator on Educational Funding?

So, I posted the Rankings knowing they are good guides by the Statistical Analysis between #1 to #100 and further must be considered why they are being Published, and often Bigger Public Universities cite them for what reason.......you guessed it, more students will buy them and cite them with ignorance especially Penn Staters that have had an Inferiority Complex against UPENN, PITT, CMU, and TEMPLE! Not realizing it Magazines do it to sell their Magazines not for any other motivation!

Yet, to be fair, Penn State University does have excellent academics in many Department such as Engineering and much to be proud of as it grew from a College in 1954 to University! Many should respect and admire, many things about Penn State, and that includes its Alumni Association but its Football Fan Base is one of the most ignorant people I ever encounter. Higher Ups at Penn State often tell me they know it too, and it comes from many PSU Fans that never went to Penn State, or could not graduate and were not selected but love Paterno & Football an chuckle saying but they buy Tickets and so we accept them?

Believe it or not Joe Paterno himself while he was not obeying Athletic Integrity Laws demanding only he could run and Discipline his Players among other secrets and silences now worldwide known, once said, "Penn State competes with Stanford for its Players."

This was true except so were all other Football Programs, and Joe's Slogans many to be fair he did not create but did adopt were just that Public Relations not factual realities. But Joe did push and talk Academic All the time yo his credit after he saw how Notre Dame was doing it in 1980s to get Top Recruits and Joe deserves credit for it, just not on the level PSU Cultists never understood from their ignorance.

They try and cite Graduation rates but Athletic Integrity also included Players Arrest rates, University Code of Conducts that applied to Athletes as Students, Title IX Reporting, and NCAA rules on Institutional control, and Penn State University had to put in many 2012 Reforms that were not being followed during the Paterno Era, and Joe was not responsible for all of them, but ignored some too on his demands only he could run his Program no one else at times?

I also respect & admire Joe's coaching and family values and it is my narrative Joe was told about Sandusky at times but did not believe it as Sandusky would respond lying to him and, until it all came crashing down on Penn Stare being left with much trash, debris and misinformation that the Cult refuses to believe and shocked over the Revelations, but as always only intellect can correct stupid if they seek to learn and now PSU Trustees and Administration have become victims of ignorance from some of their own fans? Strange but True!

The questions others have raised about criteria resonate for the following reasons:

1) It's hard for me to believe that these two schools rate so low.

2) As proud as I am of my Temple undergrad degree, I honestly don't even think that most people affiliated with Temple would rate it higher than Drexel, if only so slightly.
