Big 12 Expansion loses another candidate

It's sort of funny that this expansion mess has been lost in all of the season stuff.

Looks like one team might get the necessary eight votes but two or more can't get there. I really wouldn't be shocked to see the ACC move on someone before the Big 12 can but I don't know how realistic that would be. I also wouldn't be shocked to see the ACC try to backdoor a team or two out of the Big 12 if this all goes down in flames.

I don't think the ACC can really make anymore moves until ND agrees to come in full time or they know for sure ND won't join full time. If the b12 folds and we have 4 power conferences with 16 teams pretty good chance ND will have to join.

Yea, at this point they'd only take a no-brainer like Texas, OU, or if Maryland had a change of heart.

I'd take Texas and whoever they want to bring along. Even if it's an ND like arrangement. I see no real downside for the ACC.
Maybe on TX with a ND type of agreement. There is a very good chance if there is only 4 power conferences that it will be very hard for ND or anyone outside of those to get in, meaning there is a chance if the b12 dies that ND will join the ACC. I would kind of hope that the ACC could get ND to join full time if TX did as well, which is the dream of the ACC. Those two would put the ACC right there with the b10 and SEC for revenue and exposure.

ND and Texas to the ACC.
Its possible but I think TX is going to want to take one school with them. They don't want to leave the state of TX to be divided by the conferences that TX isn' t in. EX would be if TX tech and TCU were in the pac12, OK/OK st in the SEC with A&M. That would hurt TX in the state. TX would still be the big dog but less so.

Whatever happened to geography determining conferences? Houston is a perfect fit, but they're getting too good? What a dumb argument that is.

Any conference would take Texas yesterday. However, probably only the ACC gives them an ND deal.

I believe that right now Texas is very happy in the Big 12. If they werent, they wouldn't let Houston and BYU come in. Their allowance of expansion pretty much shows they are playing nicer.

Not sure I'd accuse them of playing nicer unless they extend the Grant of Rights. All bets are off until that happens.

I've been watching all of this with some curiosity. The WVU board knows this could end very badly for them and understand that the Big 12 needs to be okay for them to exist in their current form.

From everything I'm reading, only one school (presumably it's Cincy) has enough votes. After that, nobody has close to the 8 votes needed (nothing gets done without 3/4 of the members approval). Texas always has TCU to vote with them (TCU isn't there without Texas) and OU and Texas have very similar interests.

That doesn't mean expansion won't get done but the next issue is the Grant of Rights for TV which expires in 2025 (I think). If that doesn't get extended, then schools can start testing the waters within the next couple of years to see if there are homes for them elsewhere. That's where things could get ugly and some of the smaller players (KU for instance) could go looking for a new home or maybe Texas looks to further isolate itself financially by improving on it's own ESPN deal.

Also have to keep in mind that TV has a huge stake in this. A lot of folks in Big 12 circles think FOX opened this can of worms because they have little to no programming in the east. Since Big 12 TV is a weird mixture of FOX, ESPN, and local "third tier" programming, so the suits in Bristol might have more of a say on what happens here than anyone. As it stands, the networks will have to fork over a considerable amount of money if expansion happens and what exactly will they be paying for?

The only thing we know for sure is that there aren't a ton of really good options laying around for the Big 12 and the prospect of a conference network are very slim so long as Texas is on it's TV island. Depending on where you sit in the conference, expansion is either a really good idea or a really bad idea.

Tx would probably extend them to 2031, to when the longhorn contract is up with espn. I don't think OK wants to extend them at all. TX is happy they are getting paid well by the b12 tier 1 and 2 deals and get 15 million for their tier 3 from espn. No one else in the conference gets anything close to that. And even SEC network and b10 network don't pay out 15 million. TX is making as much currently as the b10 and SEC and won't be to far behind anytime soon. OK on the other hand got 5 million for their network and according to their AD only made 2 to 3 million profit. They are making 10 to 12 million less than TX and soon will be making 10 to 15 million less than SEC or B10 teams. TX has pretty much told everyone in the b12 that they aren't giving up the Longhorn network but they are willing to add teams if that will keep others happy and allows them their own network.

I agree in part. There's just no good reason for Texas to extend anything at the moment. They're keeping their network though. And you're right about OU. They really don't get a lot out of being the best team in the conference.
