Hey everyone,
Ryan Snyder. I cover Penn State and Maryland. Most of you know me by now.
I was down in Hershey yesterday to check up on the future PSU and UMD players, but while I was there, I also asked around about Jay Stocker. Pennsylvania head coach Pat Monroe - from South Allegheny - had a lot of good things to say. He made it no secret that Jay has been their most consistent defensive back all week.
Because of that, I'm expecting Stocker to rotate at both safety and cornerback. You have to play man-to-man in the Big 33, so Jay is going to be a guy to watch closely tomorrow night. He wouldn't totally open up to me about how they're going to use Jay, but I was given the impression that he'll be matching up against whoever emerges as Maryland's top threat at wide receiver.
Pennsylvania Head Coach Pat Monroe
- On Jay Stocker
"Jay will be in our first group on Saturday. He's everything you want in a DB, especially his length and movement. These receivers are all terrific. We have to play straight man-to-man in this game, which is the hardest coverage, and he's shown every skill you want in a defensive back.
"The one thing we haven't been able to really see yet, but we know is one of his greatest strengths, is his tackling. From what we've seen on film, he's a very physical back and he's an excellent tackler. We've been taking care of these kids, keeping them fresh and away from any injuries. We haven't been very physical in practice, so I'm really excited to see him mix it up. We anticipate him really excelling in that domain this weekend, so he's going to be a lot of fun to watch."
He went on to add...
"He has excellent hips. I haven't really seen him get beat all week. He can also play both safety and cornerback and we plan to rotate him at each position throughout the game. Jay is definitely a guy to watch on Saturday. I think he could be a difference-maker for us."
For those of you that live in Pittsburgh, you'll be able to watch the game on WPNT "My Pittsburgh TV." It's listed on their press release as channel 22. For those of you outside of Pittsburgh, you'll be able to stream the game online via Big33.org. Click Here to access that link.
